  1. Its like the "this team doesn't hit good pitching" argument...
  2. LaRissa did say that, but it was a one year opportunity. Did Renters also "wilt" under the intense spotlight of Detroit? Hr looked injured to me. I remember noticing that he never once diving for a groundball....
  3. Platoon Moose and Devers? Two lefties? Platoons are small market baseball. When teams can't afford one good player, they go out and find two dirt cheap bad players to take the single role. It's like when Jerry and George starting dating the one girl on Seinfeld. "The two of us, working together at full capacity, can do the job of one normal man!"
  4. Based on what? He handled the spotlight of St. Louis (which is VERY bright for MLB) and the spotlight of the World Series...
  5. But what is a contract Sale can't refuse? Does it take 7 years $210mill to get him to sign and forego free agency? 8 years $300 mill? And are you willing to go to that level knowing full well he could break down in the first year of the deal and make it even more difficult for the Sox to compete. Does it help the future of the Red Sox to have $50-60mill tied up in Sal and Prce for the next 5 years if they are not what they used to be? Sale has been massively underpaid for most of his career and is well aware of that. And if he isn't, his agent certainly is. An offer he can't refuse might be too much for far too long...
  6. Betts would be a great idea if Betts and hi agent were amenable. They might be after this past off-season. With Sale, the years are going to be a BIG deal. How many years do you realistically want him for? Because he isn't going to pitch like this forever...
  7. And where was Damon going to play anyway? He could barely handle CF, and he couldn't even make the throw from RF to shallow RF. So was he going to start over Manny in LF or Otiz at DH? Those appear to be the options..
  8. I expect Beni and Xander to hit, but Moreland was appeared to be riding a hot streak of his own.
  9. For Jose Abreu? Bradley, Beeks and Swihart? And somehow you think the White Sox would do that? If you were GM of the White Sox, would you make that deal? If so, can you please become GM of the White Sox?
  10. Yeah Zack Wheeler was a laughable add, too. The guy gets injured watching baseball..
  11. Porcello has made two post-season starts 12 months apart. Price has made one post-season start for Boston. And before you write off knuckleballers, Wakefield was very good for the Sox in 2003 and 2004...
  12. The Sox might trade for a second baseman, and Scooter Gennett is certainly a candidate, but I doubt anything happens soon unless Cincinnati is blown away. The Reds are in no rush here to make a deal...
  13. The statisticians and sabermetricians wouldn't have the same impact if there wasn't something to it. I would hate to see shifts eliminated or limited. It's a defensive alignment teams use to position defenders where teams feel they are needed most. That would be like the NBA limiting the number of times you can use the zone or the NFL eliminating using the prevent defense. Like any defensive alignment, opposing players will have to learn to adjust and do something different. Or just deal wIth the end results and hope for the best. I think the best thing top do is ignore the shift and just got the ball as hard as you can. Even with one extra defender on the pull side, there will still be limited opportunities to field a hard hit ball and make a play...
  14. I do. We're not going to go the rest of the season with Wright and Beeks taking his starts. He's an important member of the rotation who is off his game right now...
  15. Actually, I agreed with it. And just expanded upon it...
  16. Even with Hernandez back, I don't think catcher is the Sox top priority. At least I hope not. I have faith in Vazquez, and Leon is a prototypical backup catcher...
  17. The Sox will also need pitching. Price turns 33 this year. Wright turns 34 in a couple months. In 2021, these pitchers will be turning 36 and 37 respectively. While Wright has an advantage by being a knuckleballer, that still doesn' guarantee he will be as effective in 3 years. ERod is good to have, and hopefully his injuries are behind him.
  18. While he does have MLB experience, he also has only played 3 games this year and appears to be behind Butler on the depth chart.
  19. But then it somes down to whether or not a player would want $500K to play minor league ball and wait vs making $500K to play major league ball and have every day count towards free agency. For a lot of these players, free agency is the financial payday they have worked for their entire lives. Your plan might make more sense for the development of some players (like Swihart, as S5 pointed out), but that doesn't mean the players themselves want to go that route. The player and the organization can have conflicting goals in some cases, and that is possibly why they came up with the agreement as it stands...
  20. Their plan for him was definitely suspect, to say the least. Although it makes me think Dombrowski has a very different opinion of Swihart than Cora does...
  21. I don't think Swihart would want that extra option year and would much prefer to be traded to pursue a Major League opportunity elsewhere over spending more time in Pawtucket. He didn't declare himself for the draft to become a minor leaguer. And his demand to be traded does show some evidence that he is not married to the Red Sox organization and wants to prove himself elsewhere if that is what it takes, especially since he knows he cannot be demoted regardless of where he ends up. (Remember, he asked for a trade and not to be released. If he asked to be released, it might be an indication he was open to minor league deals if all else fails.) I'm sure he'd like to take over the catching duties in Boston. But I think he'd probably also prefer the chance to take them over in, say, Washington or Chicago, than in Pawtucket.
  22. Even if that provision was added, it still wouldn't address their two biggest potential concerns. 1) Becoming a major leaguer. For all of these players, that has been the goal since day one. No one ever as a child dreamed of one day playing in the Pacific Coast League. 2) Accruing service time towards making very significant money.
  23. I liked the Price deal at the time, and holding what has happened since against DD isn't really all that fair. But that deal can have some really negative repercussions. I'd rather have a cheaper or shorter team pitcher there and use the $30mill to extend as many as possible from Betts, Bogaerts and Bradley. The Killer B's should be the future of this team, not Price...
  24. Brian Johnson, earlier this year.
  25. Thoughts on the Price deal? I normally hate those type of long mega-deals for 30+ players, but I did like Price's contract at the time solely because of the opt out. But with everything that has happened since, I think it's a terrible deal that might have significant repercussions...
