When Castillo tried out for the MLB GM's and scouts - the same audition Cherington saw - Dombrowski reportedly left, telling the press Castillo was "nothing more than a fourth outfielder."
I don't think he is a big Castillo fan, and certainly not at the price.
I think he sells Castillo short and Rusney could certainly be a starting outfielder in MLB, but I do get why he is kept in limbo and can't say it doesn't make sense...
I wouldn't trade Beni for deGrom. Benintendi has a huge role on this team going forward by making Betts more affordable.
But if the Sox want to add another pitcher, Dan Straily might be a bit cheaper than deGrom.
(And while I like the idea of bringing up Castillo, Dombrowski seems dead set against it and has not been a Castillo fan since the day he saw him audition.)...
The Trop has always been a lousy place to hit.
Of course, there are probably instances when better home pitching also gets a big boost from familiarity on team defense...
So a Sox player in his second full season is on pace for 25HR, over 100RBI, 30 SB and an .877 OPS and people think he is declining?
How can a player be declining when he is on pace for career highs in nearly every category?
If the player is intent on reaching free agency, what options do you have?
One thing in the Sox favor is that if last year is any indication, free agent prices are dropping while arbitration prices appear to be escalating. This could mean free agency is no longer the primary financial goal of players and agents.
But then if the superstars still get paid, Mookie will still benefit. But retaining quality complimentary players like Bradley might be easier than it was 2 or 3 years ago...
It's easy to look at these teams and say "their pitching is better", but then the Sox have certainly been competitive with both of them in head-to-head games this year...
The big problem with him trying to reach all those incentives is most of them are CBA violations.
There is no MLB player in history named Baez who is in Mookie's category. And Javier Baez, who "deserve this contract" is arguably the fourth best infielder on his own team...
Between Holt, Nunez, Lin, and Pearce, the Sox should have a decent amount of depth to give what’s left of Brandon Phillips time to get ready.
Personally I think Phillips is not as good as Holt at this point in his career
I would think the Mets would be all over those players, but then young controllable outfielders (Nimmo, Conforto) and shortstops (Rosario) are not their biggest needs...
