  1. We did pummel him for 6 runs is just over 4 innings last time we faced him. Skaggs apparently has looked better since, but he also hasn't faced a team with a winning record since May 5...
  2. I love mvp's take on this. "But he's a rookie manager and I've been watching the Sox for decades." Like Cora is somehow witnessing his first MLB action this year...
  3. Hanley also has not helped himself with his lackluster performance these past 4 years. If he as posting a .900 OPS, he could be committing armed robberies in his spare time and still get signed. Toronto has not yet released Robert Osuna, for example. Aroldis Chapman is another example of how pending legal situations can be superseded by on-field performance...
  4. I'm not sure Benintendi is a lock. Other teams might need the last OF spot for that sole team rep, with Eddie Rosario being a good candidate to be there in his place...
  5. Fangraphs had him #9 on the Brewers' prospect list. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-30-prospects-milwaukee-brewers/
  6. Does t here have to be one? Maybe he just needed to vent about Pete Abraham. I used to feel that way about Gerry Callahan and Tony Masserotti alot...
  7. And that is why Jeff Van Gundy would not fit in in Chicago. Everything Chicago sports out here has to be the "best ever" and fans - and even radio talk show hosts - get MAD if you insinuate it might not be the case. Michael Jordan is the best basketball player ever. He has SIX RINGS!!! (As I tell them, "Bill Russell has 11. How is Jordan even in this conversation?" This does not go over well.) The 1985 Bears are the best football team ever!! With the best defense ever!! (And yes they argue that Jim McMahon, an average to below QB, was the perfect fit for that team and therefore irreplaceable.) Mike Ditka is the best NFL coach ever!! (They do say Belicheck would be if he didn't cheat.) I am sure they 2016 Cubs were the greatest MLB team of all time, per their fans and media...
  8. Per MLBTR, the Sox are scouting Zach Britton and Adrian Beltre. Interestingly, they also say the Rangers might be reluctant to deal Beltre, valuing his leadership and that they reportedly want him back for 2019. This sounds like posturing to me in order to get a better haul. They can deal him for prospects and still re-sign him in the off-season...
  9. That tactic was usually reserved for popular players where they were worried about the negative PR from trading or releasing them. And they never once even hinted that any player was involved in anything illegal...
  10. Alex Cora has been playing professional baseball since 1996 and payed in division 1 college ball before that. Not to mention all the high school ball and youth leagues which probably date back to 1982 or 1983. At some point, he has seen a knuckleball pitcher go flat. In fact, it's a safe bet none of us have ever seen anything on a baseball field he also has not seen. It's possible he just left Wright in because he doesn't believe in burning out his bullpen chasing wins...
  11. I do think 2b is the most likely spot to add a bat, but the Sox should try all the internal options first. Of course according to MLBTR, the Sox appear to be more focused on outfield depth. But then that comes from a guy who said no one was having off-season surgery while two players were checking in to the hospital. ...
  12. I don't either. I think if the White Sox trade Abreu, they are going to want something close to what they got for Quintana or Adam Eaton...
  13. So somehow a 7 player deal involving 5 major leaguers is not something major? Sam Travis isn't much in the way of trade bait, although the White Sox might like the south suburban native as a local-boy-made-good type player. But would they give up any remotely valuable for him? Soria is a nice add for the pen, but I a far from an Avisail Garcia fan. I think he would be overpriced for a platoon option. I do think it makes sense for the White Sox to move Abreu, but I think we can agree it won't be to Boston. We simply don't have the pieces to entice the White Sox unless they really, really like Jackie Bradley. (Their outfield is pretty weak, and largely made up of players who are best served in bench and reduced roles.)
  14. One trade possibility that might make sense in some ways would be for the Sox to send Jackie Bradley to the Cardinals for Jedd Gyorko. I like Bradley a lot, but Jedd does hit LHP, plays just about any infield position pretty well, and can't seem to get regular at-bats in St. Louis. In Boston, he could probably take over 2B right away. In St. Louis, Bradley (0.0 fWAR) could push ultra-disappointing Dexter Fowler (-1.3 fWAR) to the bench and give the Cardinals an elite defensive outfield of Ozuna-Bradley-Pham. Money is not an obstacle here, as Gyorko's AAV is about $6.2mill and Bradley's salary is $6.1mill. Gyorko has one less year of control, but does have an option for that differential season at $13mill with a $1mill buy out. Bradley might be making close to that in his last season anyway. However, this would leave the Sox with a lesser defensive outfield of Martinez-Benintendi-Betts and a big question mark about who steps in to DH (or LF/CF, if Martinez stays put)...
  15. So far I haven't heard any rumors that the Sox are even looking for a 2B, and they are looking primarily for some outfield depth, such as their interest in Mark Canha. MLBTR does suggest they could and probably should go after a 2B/3B player as a way of adding a bat, like they did last year with Nunez. If the goal is to improve vs LHP, Detroit's Nick Castellanos (1 arb year left) and Cincinnati's late bloomer Adam Duvall (3 arb years left) might be potential targets that fit the budget. Castellanos' "ability" to play 3B does not necessarily represent an upgrade over Devers; Nick is pretty bad there. His best defensive position might be DH. No idea what the asking price might be...
  16. Williams is a massive upside guy who could be a surprise source of rim protection. The Celtics next year could be adding not only Williams, but getting back two All Stars in Hayward and Irving, and seeing more play from Terry Rozier. It's hard not to be excited about that team already...
  17. A lot of that is internet bunk. Anyone linking Jordan to his dad's death is click-baiting you. And even the Kobe situation appeared to be consensual sex with a girl looking for a settlement (although that definitely does not excuse the infidelity). But I agree LeBron is a terrific role model. And as a basketball player, I think he is certainly Jordan's equal, although since I live in Chicago, I am not allowed to say that...
  18. Especially without the "last seen fair" rule and the addition of foul poles. Of course, he would no longer be credited for home runs on what would now be ground rule doubles...
  19. Over the last 2 years, Dozier has been worth the same fWAR as Jed Lowrie. The Twins might be MLB's biggest disappointment. Playoffs last year, but this year they are a game behind the Tanking Tigers. Considering 3 of the 5 teams in the AL Central essentially gave up on 2018 before it even began, they shouldn't find themselves in third place as a team trying to contend...
  20. Is he even available? The time to get Scooter Gennett was last year, when he was released by the Milwaukee Brewers...
  21. The Cubs farm is not universally widely regarded as better than the Red Sox farm. Any argument insisting it's better is debatable...
  22. Signing Martinez late was one thing. But coupled with the complete lack of activity from the Sox made it all the more frustrating. Signing Martinez did very likely keep the Sox from getting another big name this off-season, but I'm ok with the early spending in that case.
  23. I will say this - if I was an MLB GM, I would absolutely be targeting Bradley as a buy low piece. Maybe I'd be looking to move a shorter contract to get him....
  24. I think I was the loudest of the "just move on" crowd. I don't expect to be GM anytime soon anyway. I might not have been so loud if the Sox had not spent most of the off-season with their biggest acquisition as some guy named Esteban Quiroz. ...
  25. The asking price for Had has been outrageous since his name started appearing in baseball blogs. He isn't coming to Boston. If the Sox add a reliever, I expect them to go get someone like they did last year with Addison Reed. Nate Jones, maybe? Tony Barnette?
