Better off trading Duran and/or Bello, getting 1-2 useful players, and holding the cap space for inevitable mid year additions rather than paying $30mill to two more guys playing elsewhere…

    Technically only 25% of Sandoval’s have appeared in games for the Red Sox. Patrick will need to make his Boston debut to allow the Sox to tie the Angels for tjis prestigious honor…

    I see no point in trading away Hicks or Yoshida if the goal is to clear payroll since the Sox are likely to have to cover a big chunk of money and not likely to get anything back that fills a need. At least trading Duran should net a useful player (or two?) and probably clears more cash…

    Kind of an odd choice even for MiLB depth. The Sox reportedly liked Tristan Gray because of his hard hit %. Then the depth follow up is a guy who struggles to hit period. I know a meaningless depth signing for a non-40 man player who likely won’t get that many more plate appearances in Boston than I will, but the difference is still a bit striking…

    I think this is more of a wishlist than a generic definition of a #2 starter, and it’s ok to have all of this on your wishlist. Sensible, even. But no definition of a #2 starter should exclude Tarik Skubal. He should quite obviously rank higher than that. Provably worth noting - only 30 pitchers had a sub-4.00 ERA and over 160 IP. That might be closer to being the definition of a #1 starter…

    I assume they mean fall behind NY and Toronto. But yes - this is a premature conclusion. No one knows what any of the lineups for these 3 teams will look like, let alone the rotations...

    Exactly. Gray is an improvement for this team. Theres also a lot of talking about “replacing players” and whether or not it’s just status quo. If they replace Bregman with Player X and Giolito with Player Y, then we are no better than last year. Or will be when we replace Devers. Stop. Thats not how it works and we all know it. Especially arguing the team needs to replace both Devers (who played less than half of a season) and Bregman (less than 3/4 and wasn’t that good when he came back) with TWO FULLTIME NINE FIGURE CONTRACTS. (No one ever just asks to improve over Abraham Toro.) The rationale for what this team needs looks like nothing more than cries and pleas for more free agents. No wonder John Henry hates you people…

    Some numbers going the wrong way, some not. But the only one that scares me of the one mentioned earlier - age.

    By what metric? If you’re using fWAR, the drop from 3.8 to 3.6 really doesn’t indicate decline…

    What I meant is, FIP didnt neutralize ballparks abd has nothing in it for ballpark factors. But I do disagree that ballparks make pitchers better or worse. If you’re a good pitcher because of Petco, youre probably not a good pitcher. ERA+ or ERA- are both better than ERA, as both are park-adjusted to neutralize effects of the ballpark…
