Not in favor of robot umps. And if you really think about the job of a home plate umpire - having to make a split second call to determine whether a pitch traveling in excess of 90mph managed to even touch the borders of an imaginary box - getting it wrong only 30% of the time is still impressive. I mean, have you ever even seen a 95mph fastball up close coming at you? I’m impressed they see it well enough to get it right 70% of the time on those borderline pitches...

I wouldn’t be surprised if some team offered Kimbrel 4 years $8mill or 5 years $100mill. But Boston shouldn’t. If they do, who will fill out the rest of the bullpen? Will they be able to retain Kelly and afford Barnes? It makes very little sense to have a top tier closer preceded by a scrap heap bullpen, unless you want to see leads blown in the 7th and 8th innings opposed to the ninth. The bullpen will pitch roughly 600 innings or so over the course of the season. The Sox (or any other team, really) shouldn’t overemphasize the 10% that will be handled by the closer at the expense of the other 90%...

Well, closer to $26 million when you factor in taking back Maybin and Quentin. Don’t forget, Atlanta was one year removed from back to back 90 win seasons. So if closers are so important, why did they suddenly let Kimbrel go and not even get back sufficient prospects to kick off a rebuild?

Apparently it does when it’s Dombrowski. Also if you think a GM someone else likes is flawless might have overpaid, you can get accused of trying to save John Henry’s money, and damnit, we’re the big market Red Sox and owe a limitless payroll to our fans!!

Yet he only pitched in one Gme 7 of the World Series in his career and gave up 2 runs in it to turn a potential win into a loss. Guess he really was a choker...

I see it very different. I see closers as massively over appreciated, especially in terms of salary and fan love. The game isn’t always on the line when they pitch, contrary to public opinion. There used to be a stat called “tough saves”, which is now hard to find. But tough saves were saves where the pitcher entered the game with the tying run on base. Typically the league leader had 4 or 5 tough saves. Now the rest of the pitchers in the bullpen are the underappreciated ones, unless the team has a LOOGY. Those lefty specialist guys are overvalued and usually worthless, and in my opinion, detrimental to the overall success of the bullpen...

Not true at all. In fact, Kimbrel was traded 8 months earlier for one top 100 prospect and a recent draftee who had done nothing at the time and nothing since. The Braves did also unload the contract of Melvin Upton in that deal, but took on the negative value contracts of Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin. Dombrowski gave up more top 100 prospects and more additional prospects and unloaded fewer bad contracts to acquire the same pitcher with fewer years of control at a greater cost per year. Why was Kimbrel so comparatively cheap just 8 months earlier? If he had given up all that and then also saddled San Diego with, say, Sandoval, I would have liked this deal better...

The Sox might have the better record, but consider this about Houston. It is entirely possible both Seattle and Oakland make the postseason. If that happens, Houston will have played over 1/3 of their regular season games against playoff teams. Worse record or not, they will have built their season playing a tough schedule filled with good teams..,

More than likely they sign him. But if DD makes a few off-season acquisitions he might be non-tendered. That’s not very likely considering how early in the off season contract tenders are offered...
