  1. That doesn't lead to one inevitable conclusion. It could be as simple as the fact hat he has at least 3 times as many plate appearances in that spot as anywhere else in the order, and therefore was not given ample opportunity to succeed elsewhere. He batted in front of Betts for about half the games least season and had better success elsewhere in the lineup...
  2. I wasn’t wild about Moreland as the option, either. But then none of Duda, LoMo, or Moustakas really excited me much either. Although to be honest, I think they all excited me more than Moreland...
  3. When was the last time the Astros pummeled you with a 4 game sweep?
  4. Well I tried continuing the discussion. You said WAR was not perfect, which it isn't and everyone knows that. I said "What stat is?" Then you started attacking my posts...
  5. Its probably going to be next to impossible to retain all three of them anyway. And in that case, Betts needs to be the top priority of the three...
  6. Do people really think postings on message boards are useful?
  7. That can be said about any stat and really about anyone's observational skills...
  8. I do wonder if their reappearance irritates dgalehouse. J/K
  9. I’m sorry. I did not realize our raw post resources were so limited...
  10. .. to make room for Swihart. I do think there is a very strong possibility Butler clears waivers and re-signs with Boston as a minor league free agent. He's been one before a couple times and always comes back. Plus any team claiming him on waivers would need to keep him on the 25 man roster...
  11. Nobody does. But a belief backed by strong logic or rationale is always stronger. And it's always wise to listen to alternative viewpoints...
  12. Yaz did play 165 games in CF in his career. The most recent was 2 games in 1982 at age 42. But that is certainly a very small chunk of games in a very long career...
  13. I mentioned him a couple times in one of these threads. I think he'd be running away with this award in just about any other season..
  14. Just because you don't require proof doesn't make something a fact, either...
  15. Confidence is one thing, and also the Sox have plenty of young hitters who had the ability to get better. Martinez has definitely improved this team by being an offensive force. Does hit bat mean the hitter in front sees better pitches? I am not as certain of that. If that is someone’s contention, one of the most improved hitters on the team is Bogaerts, who has been hitting behind Martinez. What Martinez has done is what I’ve heard some say couldn’t be done - he’s replaced David Ortiz in the lineup. That alone is an impressive enough feat without trying to justify his impact with all sorts of unprovable statements...
  16. I had no real hopes for him, but worst case is that he is what he is - a fifth or sixth arm in a good bullpen. Sure the Sox could find better relievers, but it probably won’t be as easy as you indicate...
  17. Hembree had such a good run there for a while. It looked like it might be his breakout year...
  18. I agree, but it is worth noting the shift is geared to and works best against LH power and pull hitters. Against hitters like Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn - guys who used the whole field - it was like flipping a coin to determine if it would even work. Actually, the shift might have even helped Boggs, who was such a master of hanging back and going the other way when he needed to...
  19. I’m going to hit you with that argument. Umpires are disciplined. Umpires with bad calls are re-trained, but other disciplines are kept quiet due to union regulations. They do not get demoted, but they can get suspended. Joe West was suspended for an altercation with Papelbon, for example. Once in 2013, an entire crew was suspended for job performance issues. Largely umpires have fought against technological advancements like Questec and STATCAST, but many have admitted these systems have helped them improve their jobs and even alter their perspectives. It is worth noting that since umpires have been graded against these systems, the frequency of bad calls and ejections have declined...
  20. They are in a union, so the effects are probably mitigated...
  21. I admit prior to his initial offensive surge, I had a “down on Bradley” period where I went from thinking we might have the next Fred Lynn to hoping Bradley might become the next Darren Lewis. In some respects, I’m actually thankful for the early struggles Bradley endured in his career, as they might have helped drive softlaw away from the boards. He probably felt pretty stupid after the insane pro-Bradley/anti-Ellsbury mantra he’d been preaching for years. However those early struggles might also have had long-reaching consequences. I always believed Bradley’s early career offensive woes were huge factors in signing Rusney Castillo and moving Betts to the outfield (although the latter move has certainly worked out)..,
