  1. While true, outside of 2017, he was a much more productive hitter away from Camden in recent years. I wouldn’t put too much faith in his road woes early in his career when he was still at an age when most players are still in A-ball...
  2. I'd welcome him back to Boston on one...
  3. Not really. His home/road OPS splits were abysmal in that regard in 2017 (.895/.666). But surprisingly equal in 2016 (.885/.868) and not so bad in 015 (.905/.810). They were also awful in 2014, but he was only 21 then and missed a lot of time that year...
  4. In less than 200 plate appearances? His OPS+ of 126 with the Dodgers is actually better than his OPS+ (123) in his last 3 full seasons in Camden...
  5. So he was overhyped because he had TJS? Certainly having that surgery would diminish hid trade value. But at the time of the trade, he was an 18yo kid pitching in A ball, making him nearly 4 years younger than the average player in his league, and was ranked #19 by Baseball America. He did have trade value. He just got hurt...
  6. "Barely above average " does mean "better than most shortstops." Let's not undersell it here. MLB shortstops are usually among the best defenders on the field in any game...
  7. WAR would agree tht you take Bogaerts over Iglesias. And UZR and many other defensive metrics agree Bogaerts has increased his defensive play by leaps and bounds compared to other shortstops. Not sure why that's so stupid...
  8. Iglesias was never the most durable player to begin with, and that appears to have only gotten worse over the past 5 years. The only hole in the Sox infield defense is at third, a position currently manned by one of the youngest position players above A ball in the entire organization. Not to mention, 2 of the Sox best position prospects also play third. Second is the only question mark, solely because of Pedroia’s health. The Sox aren’t going to sign Iglesias so they can move Bogaerts to 2b. They might sign an insurance policy, but they willl control Holt, Nunez and Marco Hernandez already...
  9. But for who? Not like the Sox control him after this season. And certainly shouldn’t give him a 5 year deal...
  10. Let’s not jinx it
  11. So the greatest play of the year was the ONLY play to involve Tony Renda? Coincidence? Huh? Think so? Actually that would explain it. Nevertheless I think it still makes for the foundation of an argument to put Tony “Tony Renda” Renda on the playoff roster. Whose with the new cause?
  12. I was against dealing Espinoza for Pomeranz, but it absolutely has worked out for Boston. My biggest problem was giving up our best pitching prospect for a pitcher who was already approaching his career high in IP. It just spelled injury disaster for the Sox. But Pomeranz not only finished out that season without getting hurt, but also had a terrific 2017 with no injuries. His injury-riddled 2018 was hardly a timely expectation on my part. Given that Espinoza has not pitched in a long time and probably won't for a longer time, and that Pomeranzz exceeded expectations in both durability and performance, I do have to say that deal worked out for Boston. And while many right now would prefer Pomeranz not return for 2019, his poor showing this year might make him the bargain of the 2018-19 free agent class. We've all seen what he can do...
  13. Is it always about accounting with you?
  14. Good thing the Sox didn;t trade him like someone wanted to
  15. But only because Cora started the game with the "B" lineup. If he plans on giving Betts, Bogaerts and Martinez days off in the playoffs, the entire question of who gets the 25th roster spot is completely moot...
  16. And getting key stolen bases. At least that's what Dave Roberts told me...
  17. Side note. With that home run, Brandon Phillips tied Kendrys Morales for second in career home runs (211) by an active switch hitter, trailing only Victor Martinez...
  18. Those guys were both removed from the 40-man a while back and alternate players added. Carson Smith is also on the 60 day DL, but there are 40 active names on it. including Phillips, who was added in September. DD had plenty of chances to add Phillips before September, but didn't. Probably becuase he was hoping to make a deal and didn't want to DFA anyone. (Although Tony Renda would have been a fine option with anyone except maybe Tony himself.)
  19. Phillips? Very dramatic, but I don't think he's eligible since he was not added to the 40-man roster by 8/31...
  20. Yes. For certain, we know of 10 pitchers the Sox will/should carry (Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, Kimbrel, Barnes, Kelly, Hembree, Workman, Brasier). The last two come from the set of (listed in no particular order) Eovaldi, Velasquez, Pomeranz, Thornburg, Wright, Poyner, and Johnson. I like Eovaldi and Poyner from that set, but there are certainly other options available. Assuming they even carry 12 pitchers, which is not a given but would make sense to me...
  21. In 2004, starters went an average of 5.8 IP/start. In 2013, starters went an average of 5.9IP/start. But in 2018, starters go an average of 5.4IP/start. Teams are more reliant on their bullpens now then they were in either of those seasons...
  22. Yeah he was a borderline case before today. While it may not have sealed the deal in the eyes of management, it will probably weigh heavily against him...
  23. He is having a crappy injury-filled season, but that's not what his 2016 and 2017 post-season stats are about. I think the shorter outings are agreeing with him right now...
  24. 3 outings over 2 years. I bad start. 1 good relief appearance, one not so good. I think saying he has a propensity to melt down might be a bit premature after 5.2IP spread out over 2 seasons...
  25. I can understand that. But I do think he is more valuable than Johnson as a reliever right now.
