    One odd thought might be moving Moreland at the break. If Chavis becomes a liability at second, Moreland might be the only expiring contract to draw any interest (besides Porcello, but that only happens if the Sox are out of it). The undersized Chavis might be moved to 1b like a young Danny Murphy. Especially if the Sox are cautious after Moreland’s weak second half last season. I do consider this highly unlikely, however. I think the Sox might make some sort of Addison Reed / Ian Kinsler type move to grab a short term veteran who can respectably fill a need...

    Nunez had a player option. He exercised it and the Sox had no choice in the matter. Pedroia is going nowhere. And this isn’t going to change no matter how many unthankful fans throw pennies into water fountains wishing he would retire. Porcello, Moreland, Nunez, and Sandoval’s contract are likely gone, and barring a massive turnaround, Thornburg will go, too. Holt and Leon might be retained since they fill needs and work cheaply. Bradley probably stays, too, mostly because trade interest in him was pretty weak this past off-season and he has yet to do anything to make any team reconsider. There was a time when Edwin Encarnacion and Yasiel Puig were in play for Bradley, but those are the best offers I ever heard. (And the Sox were wise to pass on Puig in particular, as he’s just as streaky offensively but also brings worse outfield defense and a slew of alleged attitude problems.) If the Sox hope to retain Betts, there won’t be much room to bring most free agents back or bring in any high-priced talent...

    1986 was awful because they were one out away with no one on base and a two run lead. And because right before Carter’s rally-starting single, they televised the scoreboard at Shea Stadium flashing “Congratulations Red Sox. 1986 World Series Champions.” And then it fell apart. Even after Evans started game 7 with a 3-run home run to give the Sox an early lead, the hangover from game 6 made it feel like they still had no chance...

    Hey we did use Scott to get Tom Poquette! Sure he was a rather run-of-the-mill bench outfielder, but he used to murder the Sox. So it helped to stop facing him...

    Spend tens of millions on crapshoot free agent relievers with good track records and high mileage or spend next to nothing on low mileage minor league free agents that have a career similar to Ryan Brasier?

    The Sox really needed to trade Zimmer. For all the complaints I’ve seen on Sox boards over the years about Williams and Kerrigan and Francona and Farrell, Zimmer has to the much closer to the top for being the worst manager in the Sox in the past 50 years, maybe trailing only Hobson. His poor leadership was masked largely by a roster rife with Hall of Famers...

    Not so sure. Cooper went on to continue a very good career, but Scott, while older, wasn’t nothing. Lee was dealt for a utility infielder while the Sox were contenders having some of the best seasons in team history. Not to mention he was very capable of shutting down the team’s main rival Yankees. Didn’t Zimmer bench him for those two series against the Yankees for no reason in 1978 (except maybe to punish him)? That entire Bucky Dent game could have been avoided altogether...

    1. So the Sox also got you in the Scott/Harper trade. 2. I believe you mean Bobby Darwin. Danny was a defending NL ERA leader the Sox signed as a free agent in 1991 (?) who was actually a massive disappointment...

    But the Sox got him back (with Carbo) for Cecil Cooper. This wasn’t like dealing Bill Lee for Stan Papi...

    The funny thing is, if you look at a lot of the relievers who got paid heavily this off season like Kelly and Robertson, they’ve been awful. Britton might be having his worst season, but he’s still doing ok. Ottavino - among the lowest paid of the bunch - has been stellar...

    The real problem was Don Zimmer, who did everything he could to have the players he couldn’t control shipped out. That included (I believe) Lee, Carbo, and Jim Willoughby. And probably a couple others...
