  1. "Decent" Jim Rice came in third in AL MVP balloting that year, his highest finish outside of 1978...
  2. As good as Betts' arm is, I still think Bradley's might be better...
  3. It might happen, and he might surprise. There was a time when the Guardians thought Coco Crisp would never make it as a centerfielder because of his defense. The Red Sox did win a title with Johnny Damon in CF. A good defensive CF is always a plus, and certainly something I would want. But if the Sox have Betts in RF, maybe Benintendi in CF won't be as horrible as many are predicting...
  4. I'm not wild about Garcia, and the Sox have had plenty of good defensive RFers even before Betts, including JD Drew, Trot Nixon, and Shane Victorino. During the years the Sox used lesser defensive right fielders like Billy Hatcher, Darren Bragg and Cody Ross, the team was usually not very good. I don't think they leave RF up for anyone with a bat. At least I hope not...
  5. Is this in reference to Avisail Garcia? I'm not wild about him, so I hope you're right. But he is a player Bloom has a history with...
  6. Not good, but no one is ranking that decade first, either...
  7. I don't think they're going to squeeze under. I think Betts is very likely dealt, which will allow them some leeway. and there is no such thing as certainty any money player will work...
  8. I will predict the Red Sox tender JBJ a contract and then deal him to Arizona for Jake Lamb...
  9. Except in October...
  10. All the new catcher has to do is drop a three or four f-bombs and he'll be more offensive than Sandy Leon...
  11. He did pretty well in Chicago without him. One of his former White Sox catchers was Alex Avila, who is available as a free agent this offseason...
  12. Not with throws from the RF corner that went directly to the corner of the 3b bag on the fly. The throw in this case was pretty epic...
  13. Bring back Fedex?
  14. Wasn't Avisail Garcia the guy Mookie gunned down at 3b?
  15. ... for 21yo RHP Adenys Bautista, who has a 5.98 ERA after 2 seasons in rookie ball...
  16. He has a 104 OPS+, which makes him barely above average as a hitter. Basically, he's Kole Calhoun but without the defense....
  17. That's like getting excited about the 2012 Red Sox because they had Ortiz, AGon, Lester and Beckett...
  18. Not really so sure about his continued fascination with Avisail Garcia...
  19. Why didu you like the 1980's so much? The Sox finished 4th place or lower 6 times that decade. The first 5 years of that decade was the team's least successful stretch since the first half of the 1960's through to today...
  20. I would say Barnes and Workman both are 100% likely to be tendered contracts. The odds are much, much less for Leon and Hembree...
  21. You were bound to be right about something sooner or later...
  22. Winning the title is obviously great. But being able to watch the Sox from April through September every year is a little more important to me than being able to enjoy the occasional October...
  23. By how much? Right now we’re basing this on arbitration estimates. Plus who are you assuming plays CF and for how much? Same with 1b (or 2b) and fifth SP? And the last bullpen role or two...
  24. The thing about trading him at the deadline is it flies in the face of the goal of getting under the limit, since it’s pretty much impossible to get under and keep Betts without some much less likely scenario, like dealing Price. So we will see how serious this “goal but not a mandate” based on whether or not they deal Betts...
  25. Bear in mind this isn’t a deal just for a former MVP - it’s for one year of former MVP and a salary of roughly $30mill. I think the Sox can get a good prospect - most likely Keibert Ruiz - for Betts. But all these “2 from Lux, May, and Ruiz” proposals are extremely unlikely for a rental who has openly said he will not sign an extension...
