    Taking back Myers might represent one of the largest contract eats ever by the salary dumping team. When the Mariners traded Cano (owed $120mill) they took back Jay Bruce ($28mill) and Anthony Swarzak ($8.5mill) to balance out the deal. Myers is owed about double that total, while Price is owed less than Cano was. And WTF is jacko's "What does this deal do for San Diego" talk? Seriously? Forget the crap about them trying to clear cash for Strasburg. It's clearly not happening, and they clearly are not even trying to do so. Price might be expensive but dealing him for Myers means the Padres get a 2-2.5 fWAR pitcher for a net cost of $9mill per season. Basically it's like getting a slightly cheaper Kyle Gibson (2.6 fWAR season and got $31mill over 3 years). San Diego does immensely well in this deal. The question is - other than to get under the limit, why would Boston make this trade?

    I have my doubts that Gammons meant the Yankees have signed Cole. Everyone knows Boras is not a “take the first offer early”, especially when there are other teams interested. The man dragged out the JD Martinez negotiations until February, but some think Gammons is suggesting Boras walked away from a potential 3-large-market team bidding war? I know any decision to sign is Cole’s, but he did hire Boras for his advice, and I doubt his advice was “avoid the crazy offers climbing over each other and just sign early.” And I also doubt that when Cole does sign, this league-shattering news will be broken via a cryptic tweet that gets less media coverage than the signings of Beau Taylor, Kyle Finnegan and Keon Broxton...

    Personally, I think the goal is to be within striking distance of the cap, and if the season starts out horribly wrong, to bail in July to get below and deal everything possible, starting with the HOF candidate guarding Pesky Pole. Luxury tax calculations are made at the end of the season, not the beginning, so starting out under the limit is actually probably not worth it anyway...

    Hopefully. But that doesn't make the two goals exclusive. We've seen plenty of times before where players were traded because of money for teams whose primary goal was winning games...

    The Mariners reportedly want to move Dee Gordon to clear 2B for Shed Long (Or "Add Long", as AJ Preller calls him). Gordon has an AAV of $10mill. If the Mariners would take Eovaldi for him, it's a move that would save the Sox $7.4mill towards the luxury tax, fill 2B, and merely bump up the date where the Sox need to find Eovaldi's replacement for the rotation. Yes, harmony, I know the simulator would reject the move. But the simulator rejects most trades. Would DiPoto reject it? Note: What has to be considered for Seattle is that Gordon isn't very good, but I greatly prefer him over Rougned Odor...

    The Brewers - one of a handful of active teams - signed notin-favorite Keon Broxton to a minor league deal. I'm starting to get disappointed in Chaim Bloom here...

    Are they? It does make me wonder why they dealt Eric Lauer ($560K) for Zach Davies (proj 2020 salary $4mill). Or first year arb Hunter Renfroe (Proj salary $2.2mill) for Tommy Pham (projected salary ($8.6mill). Maybe Preller doesn't know "shed" means "subtract"? Maybe he thinks he's already "shed" close to $10mill in salary, thinking "this is easy!" Also, if Cano was tradable, Price is trdable. But it's a question of "should" over Eovaldi. Teams were lining up to pay Eovaldi very close to what Boston offered him one season ago. And while he was hurt, I really doubt any of them were surprised by it. It really just takes one GM. Hopefully not the one we just fired...

    f*** Choo. Where would he play? Choo in LF and Benintendi in CF after we deal Bradley? Price for Odor and Mathis. Take it or leave it. Price is expensive, but he isn't useless, like Odor.

    Our in-house guys are not good. Brian Johnson, Mike Shawaryn and Hector Velasquez are the leading candidates. If anything gets handled internally, it will probably be 2B (Chavis) and 1B (Dalbec). Or Lin at 2B and Chavis at 1B to start the year. CF is wide open. And don't expect anything from a backup catcher except defense. If the backup catcher could hit, why is he a backup?

    After some additional - and probably too much - thought, I think I would re-order this to make Eovaldi number 1 on my list to go. Price isn't likely to show up for work every opportunity in 2020, but he is a strong bet to show up more often than Eovaldi...

    Yeah I thought that way in 2002, after the AL Champion Yankees added Giambi. Then again in 2003, when they added Mussina. And again in 2004, when they added A-Rod. And yes despite the star-studded spending-spree, we out-titled them during that stretch...

    I think he is a goner, but trading Bradley gets you just under with lots of holes to fill. And that’s with assuming you take no money back

    Were I to rank my preferred order of departure, it would be 1. Price 2. Eovaldi 3. Martinez 4. Betts Now the Sox could deal Bogaerts and get under and presumably, given his reasonable salary and control, actually fill a ton of holes on this team at once and some with some quality. But I consider that a long shot...

    Or Eovaldi for Odor, which works on the simulator. Eovaldi for Belt doesn’t but SF might be into it anyway. But at some point, the Sox shouldn’t unload too many pitchers. They do have a season to play.,,

    And one has 5 All Star appearances and 4 top 6 Cy Young finishes, including one award, and has received MVP votes multiple times, while the other has never gotten a vote for anything since high school, where he was unanimously chosen “Most Likely to Have Multiple Tommy John Surgeries”...
