  1. I don't think Ockimey has much of a future above AAA. He's basically a poor man's Chris Carter. Dalbec at least has some defensive skills that can couple with his TTO approach at the plate and get him to the Majors...
  2. Bregman could one day soon challenge Trout for the title of "Best Player in the Game Today".
  3. We all knew this bullpen would be questionable back in December. That Walden has stepped up and is still on the roster is a huge credit to his performance this year. I expected him to be back in Pawtucket by June...
  4. As I've been saying for a while now, his lower defensive metrics seem to be more about him not being as involved defensively (i.e. not as many balls hit to CF as other teams). I also think being flanked by Betts is a factor. But I wouldn't say this is a flaw in the metrics. Like all stats, they measure what a player has done, not what he is capable of doing. The argument put forth by the NESN booth ignores this...
  5. Walden is a career minor leaguer who's been having some good stretches, but could also implode at any time and surprise no one in doing so. He's having a good year, but if you're building a bullpen you hope someone like Walden can hold the fifth or sixth spot and not be the third best option. In 2020, do you expect a repeat performance from Walden? Hernandez' career right now is at 15IP. He has a live arm, but major control issues. Hopefully he can be a useful pen arm. I doubt he can handle starting...
  6. Certainly a worthwhile discussion. I think both are overall superior to Eye Test...
  7. But with the Sox, after Barnes and Workman (who would not have been considered a reliable “go to” any other season), the drop off is fast and steep. Who would you say is the third best arm out there? That Josh Taylor is in the argument only proves my point...
  8. Exactly. Both Dombrowski and Epstein built their committee with mediocre and bad pitchers. High leverage situations still happen, even if they're not in the ninth inning. You need a couple reliable arms out there...
  9. dWAR isn't perfect, but because talented players don't score well isn't a flaw. If you look at the base stats for Bradley, he just isn't as involved defensively. He's second in all of MLB in innings in CF, but he's seen fewer plays than several other CFs. And his OOZ plays are middle of the pack. If you don't make as many plays, you don't score as well. Just like if you don't get as many ABs, you don't get as many hits. But that doesn't mean you're a bad hitter...
  10. It doesn't. That's not how gravity works. Even bullets drop slightly due to gravity when coming out of a gun. A pitcher might throw the pitch with a slight upper trajectory, but that's not the same thing...
  11. Certainly some pitchers have faith in certain catchers handling their stuff and keeping it from going to the backstop. Nomo greatly preferred Varitek to Mirabelli. Greg Maddux never wanted Javy Lopez. Sale has a comfort level with Leon. I’m fine with that. Leon is a weak hitter, but what do people expect from a backup catcher?
  12. Like it or not, Cashman has been good at finding contributing players other teams didn’t even want, like Hicks, Voit, Urshela, and Maybin. Being 10 games up did give him some leeway for failing to get a SP. Although I think his failure to trade Garcia and Flovial for Stroman will haunt him now and in the future...
  13. Easily understandable...
  14. Or, if you’re OB and Remy, it means OPS is flawed. (OPS does have a major flaw rooted in basic math, but that doesn’t impact its values. Just in its quantifiability.)
  15. Which is why Sale isn’t saying it. Sale’s velocity is down this year. Do people think that is Leon’s fault too?
  16. I absolutely disagree with that logic for refuting WAR. And I believe they try as hard as they can almost all the time and baseball is their comfort zone. But I’m sure Remy agrees with you that most players dog it during the regular season...
  17. Since I’m not going to say something you want to hear, I doubt you’ll listen. But the argument that WAR is flawed because one player went from having a really good score to a really bad score is just flat out stupid. That’s like saying batting average is flawed because a player can have a good BA one year and a bad one the next. I mean, did he suddenly become a worse hitter?
  18. Betts has an .869 OPS. His career OPSi is .885. If you take out his first two seasons when he was young, developing, and learning the league, his OPS since his age 23 season is .903. He’s basically hitting like he always has with the exception of his outstanding 2018...
  19. You must be new here;) I’ve been ripping Dombrowski’s lack of activity this year since December. I’m not even sure he still works for the Red Sox...
  20. For the 10,000th time - no the Sox cannot get out of Pedroia’s contract. The CBA specifically prohibits moves designed to deliberately evade the luxury tax calculation. The Sox are just going to have to learn to find 40 baseball players whose combined salary is a mere $215million. Such the handicap...
  21. While it’s not uncommon for a player’s performance to drop after signing a big deal, Sale’s issues did start before his big contract. I don’t think he’s in the “I don’t care!! I’m getting paid” camp. But his continued struggles just make Dombrowski look worse in my eyes...
  22. Least productive platoon ever?
  23. No. His $10mill plus salary and one year of control combined with a sub-.700 OPS and 0.3fWAR is a pretty untradable combination. Not to mention, the Sox will have a need in CF and might want to re-sign Bradley. Trading him does kill that option leaving CF for who? Rusney Castillo? Jarren Duran?
  24. It’s not so bad when you can still remember some rings. Plural...
  25. I wonder when you’ll realize every time you tell us how Sale is done, every time you get excited over his “death nail” contract, every time you predict the harbinger that is his future... Luis Severino has another setback. Did you just hear that? That little “thwack” noise off in the distance? Sounded like tendon snapping...
