I think most GMs get this better than we do. The logic is that payout over the first few years needs to eclipse the albatross of the later ones. That's why they backload these deals very often - in order to put a better team around the mega contract player while he is still in or near his peak years. As he declines, the team was likely to be worse anyway, so the player gets paid more and the supporting cast isn't as good...

The question is - is repeatedly throwing Porcello and Brian Johnson out there just putting up the facade of trying to win? It seems to me at some point, giving important starts to Porcello is just doing what hasn't worked so well all year and hoping it magically gets better. At some point, maybe it does become time to make a change because of the necessity to win...

I see Chavis and Travis holding own first. Hernandez getting first shot at 2b. Duran in the minors to start the year, likely with Chatham. And Dalbec being traded.

The Sox might have the worst farm in the majors, but that doesn’t mean it’s devoid of major leaguers, even at the upper levels. It means they probably don’t have as many as other teams or don’t have any high impact players or both. It is possible in the next 12 months, any of Dalbec, Chatham, Houck, Hart, Mata, and/or Duran all make MLB debuts. And others like Lakins, Poyner, Shawaryn, and Kelley return to the majors. But what level of player will they be? But only 5 of the top 10 on Soxprospects.com are below AA...

To be fair, I’ve been piling on DD since he was hired, although pausing briefly to give some credit last October. That’s the thing with DD; he absolutely HAS to get the title, because his methods ensure hard times to follow, and the title makes them somewhat easier to take...

Dalbec is really the Sox best completely expendable trade chip. If they have to fill a need cheaply - and they will, probably more than one - this guy is obviously on his way elsewhere. I see South Beach in his future, where they like minimum wage baseball players and the hot corner is no longer contaminated with the skeletal remains of Martin Prado. Sox get Jose Urena to replace Porcello...

I think between Marco Hernandez and Tzu-Wei Lin, the Sox do have the utility infielder role covered. They also have defensive whiz kid Jeremy Rivera to cover 2b/3b/SS if need be. It would be nice to get an actual fourth OF, but the best internal candidates are probably Cole Sturgeon and Tate Matheny. Notice how I did not say "Gorkys". Bottom line: The Sox can probably build their bench internally for little to no money. This might be very important financially, but can have an obvious and potentially severe drawback...
