  1. Point? I never said "small payroll." I said "less than $208 million." Did either have a payroll in excess of $208 million when they won?
  2. It is a Bush League move. The guy was actually trying to get himself into playing shape. Even the Red Sox did not try to recoup anything from Sandoval, and Sandoval was trying to get himself into any shape other than playing...
  3. I'm trying, but it's nearly impossible to get people to change their beliefs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belief_perseverance
  4. Also, how many DHs do the Yankees need? Stanton might find himself in that role due to some physical limitations. Sanchez really belongs there. And they still have Andujar and Frazier looking for a place on the field where they are not complete detriments, but both do slot in perfectly as DHs. Maybe one of these guys can grab a 1B mitt. But even then, and even if Stanton stays in the OF and Sanchez behind the plate, they still don't need a DH...
  5. I don't think that building a competitive team for under $208million is such a crazy task. Plenty of other teams do it. But for some reason, Red Sox fans cannot envision winning without spending. Sure, a GM like Dombrowski cannot win without spending. But that doesn't make it impossible...
  6. Or Johan Santana or Felix Hernandez. But we have had people on here who take the attitude that "wins matter"
  7. I disagree, deepending on what you mean by "high percentage". While certainly a lot of the media has started to ignore i in favor of other metrics, there are plenty of casual fans who evaluate using W-L record. Even a few in the media still use them constantly...
  8. I'm sure the Rays fans were disappointed to get Glasnow and Meadows for a mediocre Chris Archer...
  9. And that might be Bloom's opinion as well. Although it is possible that the new CBA is less friendly to teams that spend heavily...
  10. That hasn't happened yet. More than likely it's just a statement made so they can trade him with the appearance that, if nothing else, they will keep him. If they announced they would non-tender him, why would anyone want to trade for him knowing he will be available for 1) no prospects or players and 2) likely less money after the non-tender deadline? If the Sox cannot work out a trade for Bradley and it comes time, they are still likely to non-tender him IMO...
  11. If the Sox don't trade Mookie, the goal (but not mandate) of resetting is out the window, unless they can accomplish the far more difficult task of moving either Price or Eovaldi. If they cannot reset, the next offseason - the one with Betts, Springer, and few intriguing pitchers - might also be off the table...
  12. Or the Athletics. You probably saw them both last October...
  13. I think he’s already giving him a pass on 2020...
  14. This one has. My logic is simple. Most flop. All do eventually. Avoid anything longer than 3 years. Avoid huge cash contracts. Use free agency as a short term gap filler, not a long term team builder...
  15. For starters, that exact plan failed with Xander Bogaerts. I’m all for aligning the best defense. If someone can’t learn a new position or sucks at it or it throws them off their game, that’s one thing. But otherwise, if there is a chance for improvement, I’d be all for it. Not sure why Devers not playing 1b is a factor, but Dalbec never playing the position is discounted. It will be interesting to see what the Sox do, if anything, with Dalbec. Certainly he could handle 1b, but if he cannot hit, all he represents is a cash savings. His arm might also make him a candidate for RF, assuming someone is needed there. Or he might be traded. Or simply start the season in Pawtucket (possibly in RF)...
  16. To be fair, he is working towards the correct pronunciation with his punnish moniker, something Bloom himself says he has to correct people on almost daily...
  17. Are you trying to argue that Ellsbury was a good signing because the Red Sox signed Ramirez and Sandoval? If your goal is to be the voice of objectivity, normally an easy task on a message board, constantly and opportunistically harping on bad moves by the Red Sox is absolutely the wrong way to do it. The Yankees made a bad move with Ellsbury. This is a fact. The Red Sox made bad moves with Hanley and Sandoval. Also fact, but completely irrelevant to this thread. It’s not like Sox fans were decrying Ellsbury while extolling the virtues of Sandoval and Hanley. Bringing them up just because is Grade A Trolling. If you don’t want to be known as a troll, it’s best to stop...
  18. That’d be great if the Dodgers were that generous. But I expect something more along the lines of Tony Gonsolin, Josiah Gray (or Jeter Downs) and Pederson...
  19. That plus the cash they owe Stanton, not to mention what Judge and Sanchez will be making in arbitration...
  20. Well, 210 IP of crap still saves the bullpen. Even with his ERA over 5.5, Porcello still was worth more fWAR than Zach Davies (10-7, 3.55)...
  21. Yes, we call that "recognizing the consequences"...
  22. I wasn't considering Logan's current value. I stick by my complaints at the time of the trade. Logan's current value just underscores how bad this deal was...
  23. Well so far the only name on the table is Jake Marisnick. If Margot elicits an "Ewwww", whatever Marisnick gets out of you is probably best left untyped. If the Sox are determined to go cheap at the position, they could easily do A LOT worse than Manny Margot...
  24. The Sox do need a SP and it's easier to do worse than Porcello than better on their budget...
  25. Basically guys you couldn't trade Andujar for without having some seriously good blackmail on the other GM. If the Rockies could get Andujar, I don't think they would let oft-injured Danny Murphy be the obstacle. Did the Yankees let Ellsbury get in the way of acquiring Aaron Hicks? Of course, trading Andujar for Schwarber, which is the thread title here, would just be a bad move by the Yankees...
