  1. So... a decimated farm and bloated payroll that the owner won't let him add to at the trade deadline don't count? How about a contract for Steve Pearce despite losing two key relievers?
  2. This guy wrote earlier this week that the Sox should be able to trade him to the Seattle Mariners. http://dailycampus.com/stories/2019/9/3/columnnbspits-time-for-the-boston-red-sox-to-trade-jackie-bradley-jrnbsp I don't think he took into account that 1) the Mariners already have an all-Glove/no-bat CF in Mallex Smith and 2) they have been doing everything possible to unload every lucrative contract they can. Sure, they'll hand over Dee Gordon or Kyle Seager for Bradley. But they would hand those guys over even without getting Bradley...
  3. How many other teams really wanted him and how badly did they want him? I remember 2 teams making reported offers. Cleveland offering Edwin Encarnacion and hi $20mill contract, and the Dodgers offering Yasiel Puig and his (-$20mill) attitude. Both of those were also when Bradley had 3 years of control left...
  4. The Phillies and Braves disagree with this. And the Mets have one of the least effective bullpens in MLB and are 1 game under their Pythagorean record. In fact, using fWAR as a measure, the Red Sox have the 4th best bullpen in MLB this year...
  5. It is possible to trade any player. Robinson Cano proved that this past offseason. But I would think that Eovaldi and Price would be tough moves given that neither has been very healthy. Eovalidi does have age on his side. I think one year of Jackie Bradley at $10-12 mill is a very tough move. Especially if the idea is to not eat any salary. I think the best option to handle Bradley at his expected salary is a straight non-tender...
  6. $20mill isn't an elite pitcher salary, and wasn't even in 2016. That same off-season, Jordan Zimmerman signed for 5 years $110mill, Jeff Samardjzia signed for 5 years $90mill and Wei-Yin Chen signed for 5 years $80mill. You might want to re-adjust your scale for "elite" pitchers. The elite pitchers that offseason were Price and Greinke, both of whom signed for substantially more than a $20mill AAV. Porcello was also 26 at the time, and it was a rare case of paying a pitcher for what he was going to do as opposed to what he had already done...
  7. I'm not all that wild about Ockimey, Travis or Dalbec. But it is possible at least 2 of them are in Boston next season...
  8. I bought one to replace my old-fashioned Tim Spooneybarger...
  9. I know. If not having his number retired means he was overpaid, I guess Dwight Evans was a contract bust as well...
  10. If there is truth to the rocket ball having a smaller thread height, Porcello is exactly the type of pitcher who could see the worst negative effects. He doesn't throw exceptionally hard so as to blow his fastball by hitters, and his heavy reliance on the two-seamer could be problematic. The reduced thread height would mean the pitch broke less away from right-handed hitters, making it a straighter low 90's fastball. That type of pitch gets punished in MLB, unless you have an excellent changeup to keep hitters off-balance. Porcello's offspeed offerings are probably breaking less due to the reduced seam height, making his sinker basically the same pitch as his changeup, and his curveball would hang a lot more often. He's already given up more flyballs than he did all of last season...
  11. The Sox are 21st in MLB for IP from the starter at 708 IP. While Tampa and NY have fewer, Tampa'snumbers are skewed by the opener strategy, and the Yankees were built around the bullpen, unlike the Sox. The Sox bullpen has actually been somewhat of a surprise, and would look a lot better across the board if they weren't so heavily relied upon. This was a team that was clearly built with a solid starting rotation in mind, and they have not had one...
  12. Oh why go into the disclaimer? 25% of the posts on this board are t say "I told you so" and many with the attitude that some of us even have influence with the front office. Come join us...
  13. I think it's possible for the Sox to reset and still be competitive in 2020. Not sure if we have the right GM for that, though. And unfortunately, JBJ has to be a roster casualty for that to happen...
  14. Actually the Sox pen has pitched pretty well, especially lately. The blown saves % is high, but that's because of the crazy lengthy opportunities handed over by the rotation. If your bullpen only hjas to hold the lead for 1 or 2 innings, the chances of converting the save are much higher than the repeated 4 inning opportunities the Sox pen has been handed...
  15. Except for that whole steroid suspension scandal...
  16. 3-51 when trailing after 7
  17. I might have left out the word "million" for their original estimate. But after the steroid scandal, $50 seems about right...
  18. You blame everything on new metrics and statisticians. Except success...
  19. Way back when Jason Giambi signed his deal with the Yankees for 7 years $120 million, Rosenthal wrote about a study two New York econmists did to determine how much he was worth to the Yankees, and they concluded he would be worth roughly $50 per season in all the revenue gains. Now in this case, it didn't pan out for reasons related to steroids and Grandy Jury testimony and public "confessions", but the point is the value of marquee players to their teams...
  20. Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical. - Yogi Berra
  21. It did happen. But, like anything else, it works for some and not for others. It's not like there is one surefire preparation method that works for every player...
  22. Eovaldi was just a bad idea. I as opposed to bringing back Kimbrel, but I would have given in to Kimbrel's 6 year $100mill demands before sigining Eovaldi to that deal. I see the appeal of Eovaldi, but the downside was just waaaaaaay too obvious. And it took almost no time to manifest itself, either...
  23. Porcello has been worth 10.8 fWAR on this current contract. Over the same period of time, Price has been worth 10.6 fWAR. But somehow, Porcello is the contract worth complaining about? And this is before we discuss dollar values and time remaining...
  24. A bit unfair sine Eovaldi has made so few starts this year and Price has been on the IL But Price had one one July 24, and then was IL'd 2 starts later. Chacin had one July 3, and has only appeared in 3 games since. Cashner has only had one since joining the Sox, but it was against the Yankees..
  25. Maybe But Cashner logged 30 IP as a Sox starter. Porcello hasn't gotten anything going in over 150...
