  1. I was going to say, it’s been what over 10 years since the Yankees last one. Did you realize the Red Sox only have one title drought 10 years or longer in team history? Granted, it’s quite a bit longer...
  2. No. “Deal breaker” as in no way would I take the contracts of both Price and Betts, let alone give up anything of value as well. Deal Betts separate from Price, if you have to move both...
  3. Gio Gonzalez is another possibility. He got only $2mill last year, and he didn’t pitch much, But he was actually very good when did...
  4. If Porcello is to pricey, and MLBTR predicts an $11mill AAV (which is their primary concern), I doubt the Red Sox bring him back. They might find cheaper alternatives in pitchers like Wade Miley, Alex Wood, Rich Hill, Tanner Roark and Ivan Nova. The two I would be reticent about are Hill and Wood. The Sox big problem this year could easily be the health of the rotation. If it is, Wood and Hill both have histories suggesting they are more likely to be part of the problem than part of the solution...
  5. It might not be reasonable, depending on the language of the CBA and what, if anything, Ellsbury did. He might have actually complied to the letter of the CBA. What probably hurts the Yankees the most here is the timing. They’re suddenly upset about his rehab on his release date? How long ago did they learn? If you knew some story about him going AWOL and rehabbing off site away from the team, how long ago did you learn that? It’s a very safe bet the Yankees knew anything long before you did. So why wasn’t this brought up then? It almost feels like a case of “we’re cutting him anyway. Let’s see what salary we can recoup.”
  6. Well, I doubt we have all the details. The CBA does require a player notify the team prior to consulting his own physician, but the Yankees are allegedly complaining Ellsbury sought unapproved medical opinions. There is a difference between notification and approval. Did Ellsbury properly notify the Yankees or not? And is the reason for this notification because of the team’s responsibility to pay for the travel, lodging, and medical expenses involved (which per the CBA, they are responsible for)? If so, what if Ellsbury wasn’t looking for reimbursement? Is Ellsbury the first player ever to handle his own rehab? Probably not, but it does seem like he is the first to be penalized for it. Plenty of players milk their injuries or make little to no attempt to get better. Ellsbury was at least doing something along those lines. If he had simply done nothing and sat out, he might be better off. And does the CBA have any clauses for what is acceptable punishment for transgressions for outside medical opinions? Or for withholding salary? Is what the Yankees trying to do legal here?
  7. Are you forgetting? Scott Boras is also a lawyer...
  8. If anyone ever actually said that, it needs to be bookmarked by everyone and added to everyone’s signature line - with credit. A comment at that special level of stupid needs the proper recognition...
  9. Yeah yeah. Just keep yappin’ about that on your way to your super expensive big and tall specialty stores, and try not to lose too much sleep knowing that I can fit comfortably in any airplane seat or smart car.
  10. One bloggers likes the idea of a reunion. https://www.thepeskypole.net/2019/11/why-return-to-red-sox-makes-sense-for.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThePeskyPole+%28The+Pesky+Pole%29
  11. Me too. I'm just not as confident of Texas making that trade. I'm also guessing "not being discussed." So far this trade possibility only exists in my mind...
  12. All the more reason Bloom and Preller need to get together and swap Price for Myers. The $18mill AAV savings should help the Sox get under the limit and possibly keep Mookie. And the Padres get a veteran starter for their young staff at a net cost of $9 mill per year. Not sure why this trade has not happened already. Anyone got Bloom's cell? The only real problem is the Red Sox would have to get another SP to replace Price. But I think that can be done for less than $18mill
  13. Not if he is healthy. He did give up more home runs last year, but you know who else did? Pretty much every pitcher in MLB...
  14. Yeah that's like $60mill in salary for 2020, and then $32 mill for each of the next two seasons. If the Sox take back Myers, the Padres would get Price for a net salary of $27.5 mill total spread out over 3 years. Price is no longer a $31mill per year pitcher, but he is probably still a $9mill / year pitcher. And the Padres need not worry about replacing Myers. They have too many outfielders already...
  15. I'll take being "stuck with Sale." If his arm his healthy, he pitched better last year than the ERA indicated. His xFIP was among the lowest in MLB, and he had that ungodly streak of something like 41 strikeouts without a walk...
  16. With Price, I'm hoping for a simple "less bad" contract swap. Rougned Odor, for example, is one. Wil Myers is another.. Baseballtradevalues would poo poo a straight up Odor/Price swap, but approve a Myers/Price swap. That's weird to me because, as boring as Myers is, he is far better than Odor...
  17. So you think some team will be willing to pay Price $96 mill over the next 3 years just to get Dalbec or Chavis? I hope you're right. But I have my doubts. Very serious doubts...
  18. I'm 5'7". Who isn't bigger than me? I think I can only argue with Craig Grebeck and Freddie Patek...
  19. So encase him in bubble wrap, hand him a glove and send his ass out there....
  20. Spherical, specifically. His nickname should have been Pac Man...
  21. Well, as slasher said, both built the farm at the same time. Why is that so unimportant? And neither left the Sox in the position they are in now, with payroll limitations and no help on the horizon in the form of minimum wage players with potential to contribute. Even you yourself said Bloom has a "monumental task" in front of him to be competitive while staying under the limit. Why is that? Spending it an easy way to succeed, but there is a clear an obvious downside, which comes when the expensive players inevitably are no longer the stars that were paid for. At that point, having the farm system helps mitigate that damage, by getting contributing players who don't require $10mill paychecks. Right now the Sox have the expensive contracts whose contributions appear to be declining, but nearly nothing in the way of minimum wage help to offset things. This could be a big problem. And this is where Dombrowski failed. It's like someone who takes their retirement savings to fund a trip to Vegas. Sure the Vegas trip/World Series title were fun, but once they are over, then what?
  22. And yet if the Red Sox could get Andujar and plug him in at 1B, I would be extremely excited...
  23. ... which Pablo then interpreted to mean he was contractually obligated to eat a steady diet of Twinkies and non-steroidal milkshakes, although I think that may not be what the clause meant...
  24. Because that is the current goal (but not a mandate)...
  25. Yeah that sounds like a real effective strategy. No one ever gets annoyed at repetitive arguments. I assume you can feel the sarcasm dripping off your monitor here...
