I think the scandal fits, just not in the "harmonious protection" aspect. If DD was fired to save him from this stigma as a favor from Henry for years of service, why was he trashed on his way out the door? Now, Red Sox Tradition might be a acceptable answer here. But beyond that, that part didn't fit...

Not fitting. Henry didn’t “fire” Dombrowski to get ahead of this scandal and preserve the name of a longtime associate and then follow up by planting numerous stories in the media that Dombrowski was difficult to work with and fired due to his attitude. Now it might be more plausible that Dombrowski spent too much, ruined the farm/future, and was difficult to work with. But this was tolerated because the team was winning, and had a recent title. But once the team stopped winning and it was revealed that the one title the Sox did get was due to cheating, it was too much...

Not to mention, he was never much of an enticement anyway. The Giants took on Zack Cozart’s contract to get first rounder Will Wilson. Cozart makes about 2/3 of what Happ makes. Translation - it’s going to take an actual good prospect to get a team interested in Happ. Guys like Tarpley and Cessa won’t work. It might take someone more like Estevan Flovial, Everson Pereira or Clarke Schmidt...

There was that whole incident when Kershaw called out publicly for the removal of one cancerous player. Scott Van Slyke admitted on a coupe radio shows that Puig was the player. I think this lead to the bizarre minor league demotion and subsequent off field party bus stories. There was even a time in 2014, where, of all people, Hanley Ramirez (according to Jeff Passan) took Puig aside and told him "Don't make the same mistakes I made." He can be a colorful one...

But when these writers make the arguments for best CF of all time, they always start by rambling off offensive stats. Occasioanly some defensive matter gets brought up as a complete afterthought. But when you have 600 career home runs or a 56 game hitting streak under your belt, you could go out to CF and the only time you actually use your glove is to challenge the corner outfielders to duels, and you're still considered one of the best of all time... -
