    No one said it was a major issue. But if I’m going to worry about one of the Sox catchers, the I think the bigger worry is the one who got 446 plate appearances as opposed to the one who only got 188. It’s not like Narvaez has any kind of track record where I can tell if last year was the real deal or just some lucky fluke year…

Smith’s Series-wing home run doesn’t happen without Miguel Rojas’ game-tying home run, a blast that put Rojas ahead of Francisco Lindor on the “Most Career Game-Tying Home Runs in the Ninth Inning of Game 7 of the World Series” list, but I wouldn’t start Rojas over Lindor if it was a choice between the two…

    I think teams expect the Sox to have benches like WBC teams. Yes the Sox backup catcher cannot hit. Know who else has that issue?? Every team in MLB! The Mets, with a payroll north of $300 gazillion dollars, have Luis Torrens as the backup. Their little sisters the Yankees (payroll wise) use career minor league JC Escarria behind Austin Wells. The Phillies, lead by free-spender Dave Dombrowski, have Rafael Marchan, who I believe did not play major or minor league baseball last year. (Source: Roster Resource. Final rosters might vary.) Some teams like the Dodgers (Dalton Rushing) and Orioles (Sam Basallo) have backup catchers who were top prospects that will likely move to other positions in the near future. Just like the Athletics did with Tyler Soderstrom. But for the most part, backup catchers are the punters of MLB - they go from team to team silently and only have one skill useful to their sport. Expecting a backup catcher who can catch and hit is like expecting the punter that can catch passes and block…

    So you want a backup catcher that can hit and field? Any reason that player settles for a backup job? If Narvaez goes down, the Sox have Wong, Jason Delay, and Matt Thaiss. None are really hitters. But then someone like Ivan Herrera or Will Smith isn’t signing on to be a backup catcher…

    The job of a backup catcher these days is to work well wuth one dedicated starter. Wong was pretty bad last year, but he did at least work well with Bello. Im not worried about Wong, and I say that without having particularly high hopes for him…

    And Campbell was a BA top 3 prospect only 12 months ago, and the AL Rookie of the Month 11 months ago. That doesn’t all disappear in 100 PA. And even if he is never a superstar, and even if we only look at his remaining contract, he is still paid utility infielder money. He might not be the next Jose Altuve, but then again, he’s being paid like Brandon Drury…

    Is your point that the IBL is better run than MLB? Big deal. Talk about a low bar. My daughter’s old 14U softball league was run better than MLB. Although to be fair, that 14U league did have issues before they implemented a salary cap…

    Disagree. Locking the high upside guys is a nice starting point, but those players are not always so willing to extensions. Locking up any young plsyer is fine, as long as you can lock him up at a proper value (or lower). I’m sure no one would be wild about a Nick Sogard extension, but if he signed a 4 year $10mill contract, it might wind up worth it. Of course, many would get upset at that gommmitment. The one thing about locking players is up is, they need to perform IMMEDIATELY or it was a mistake. Even if we ignore the first 2 dirt cheap years on Bello’s deal, the remaining contract gets you Jordan Hicks in free agency. And because Bello (who I can promise you was NEVER compared to Pedro by the front office) is actually under control cheaply, he is now somehow behind Early and Oviedo on the depth charts? I spent half the off-season pushing Bello out the door, but not because I wanted him gone. It was because his contract does make him a valuable trade asset, and we had depth to cover for him.

    But waiting has risks, too. Had the Sox extended Mookie Betts in the 2016/2017 timeframe, MLB would be much different today. Campbell’s deal really isn’t so bad. The length is the only issue. His $7.5mill AAV is basically Willi Castro/Rob Refsnyder level stuff on today’s market…

    Spring Training is rarely a tryout for anyone anymore. Most roster decisions made in ST are more the result of injuries. The Sox only have 3 healthy catchers on the 40 man roster, and one of them is Mickey Gasper, who isn’t much of a catcher. Wong’s role on the 2026 Red Sox will be to catch Brayan Bello, and it’s a role that has worked out very well for Bello in particular…

    I’m just saying that Team Italy roster looks more American than apple pie and obesity. Clearly being from Italy or ever visiting Italy or even visiting New York’s Little Italy was not a requirement. Now I don’t care about player origins, but I do think to represent the country of Italy, you clearly only had to meet one of the following: 1. Familial history tracing back to Italy in a minimum of the last 500 years. Or more. 2. Last name ending in a vowel. 3. The ability to find Italy on a map. Or, just find a map. 4. Ever eaten spaghetti or similar. And yes, they are willing to accept the space age polymers from Chef Boy-Ar-Dee. Reluctantly. 5. Sign up to play for Italy.
