  1. Sometimes having good young players rally is a hindrance at the trade deadline. Back in 1996, the Sox made an attempt to get Denny Neagle from Pitt. Boston has some good prospects back then, but Pitt wanted Nomar. And only Nomar. No idea who else Boston dangled, and they had names back then. Brian Rose. Carl Pavano. Jeff Suppan. Donnie Sadler. Not sure who they offered, but I heard it didn’t matter. Pitt wanted Nomar. No deal, and Neagle went to Atlanta for a package built around RHSP Jason Schmidt (who did have a decent career). Were teams focused on Anthony? “If you like Password so much, you keep him and trade us Roman,” which ironically is an anagram for Nomar…
  2. There was some divide in that philosophy yesterday. Boston wasn’t the only limited participant in the feeding frenzy. NL Central leader Milwaukee had the most confusing day - trading away an injured Nestor Cortes and acquiring an injured Shelby Miller and an even more injured Jordan Montgomery. Not to be out-underdone, their division rival Cubs acquired basically the same thing as the Red Sox, but added in superstar sub (or is it sub-superstar?) Willie Castro. Castro might struggle to fit in with the Cubs as the only Spanish-speaking position player. Ok, he can talk to the catchers (at least ones not named Carson Kelly)…
  3. The story I heard was Breslow wanted Bregman for 3b and Cora wanted him at 2b. Bregman had previously stated a willingness to play either position, and probably others…
  4. It is why I would have fired him. But Henry wouldn’t let me. ”Who are you!?! You don’t even work for us!!” Excuses, excuses…
  5. I think free agency is PR in many cases. It too often involves aging players sometimes with big names on the wrong side of 30, and sends a message to the fans about spending money not being an obstacle. Didn’t your excitement about this team escalate the day Bregman was signed? Or David Price?
  6. I have a catch phrase? Are you confusing me with Urkel again?
  7. Isnt tampering always verbal? Do team officials put their illegal offers to other team’s controlled players down on paper? Do they e-mail them offers and leave trails of e-vidence?
  8. Is that was Hes up to now? He got his start as a comedian via YouTube, and was among the first to do so. (It’s rather common now.). But I didn’t know what he was up to and have barely heard his name in years…
  9. Blaze Jordan is the MLB equivalent of Bo Burnham…
  10. I would be surprised if the Twins didn’t ask for Roman Anthony for Ryan, and the counter argument that that is unrealistic is bunk. Not likebthevTeins needed to deal Ryan; they control him until 2028. Matz made sense, and Bloom clearly still has some fascination for Blaze Jordan. But May is a disappointment, especially since the Sox traded away a better and more controllable SP (Priester) earlier this year, and I’m not sure if he paid more for May than he received for Priester…
  11. Not competitive? The Sox have the 4th best record in the AL. I get the disappointment, but this was a good team on July 30th. It still is, but I think we all wanted to see some holes filled…
  12. Technically we unloaded Half Price on them. Also Graterol was still with Minnesota at the time. He went to the Dodgers in that trade..
  13. Again, they reportedly asked for Andrew Painter as part of the package for their closer. They were aiming high. Heck their setup guy got them 4+ years of a 24yo mid-rotation starter that posted 1.7 bWAR last year in only 138 innings. With the bizarre exception of James Outman, they were clearly asking for unrealistic…
  14. Romero and Mayer played together as teenagers at some level (little help?), no doubt with a psychotic coach who made them practice infield pop ups by lofting shot puts at them…
  15. And Blaze went back to the guy who originally drafted him. Just like Michael Chavis before…
  16. If you were running the Twins, you wouldn’t ask for Anthony? Don’t forget they reportedly originally asked for Painter to be in the deal for Duran…
  17. What is Breslow’s fascination with oft-injured Dodger pitchers at the deadline?
  18. I would imagine Breslow felt similar. But I also have to think the Twins - who got two BA Top 100 prospects for their closer - were not going to deal 2+ years of Joe Ryan for Wilyer Abreu. I would be surprised if they didn’t ask for Anthony…
  19. What if that “one outfielder” was Anthony? It wouldn’t surprise me; that type of thing has killed many deals before…
  20. Chapman as a 37yo rental was not getting a package anywhere near what Duran got. Duran is over a decade younger and still has two seasons left after this one. The Sox should have been able to rival Phillies package with Bryan Clarke and Password…
  21. He’s not a lefty, but if Hicks can face 3 batters and get one out, I call it a successful outing…
  22. They are a good team, which why this was such a disappointing deadline…
  23. Who knows when he will be back, or when he will be gone again…
  24. I find it interesting they really need a 1b, but instead of acquiring one, they dealt away their top two in the minors…
  25. A lot of those guys were really young in 2004.
