????? Tomase mentions Gonsolin, Ruiz, May, Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray and mentions the Sox could get two of them. The only names he takes out of the equation are Lux and Verdugo. Ruiz was a BA top 20 prospect last year. May was also ranked (BA #82). Gonsolin pitched well in MLB. Gray and Downs had terrific seasons and both would easily crack the top 4 on the Sox prospect rankings. And Downs/Gray might be the WORST option here. If the Sox got Gonsolin and Ruiz for Price and Betts, that’s a good haul...

I don’t think Bloom should even be thinking about Seager in any Betts trade. If Betts had more than a year of control or the Sox were willing to pay some salary, they’d get a better package. But one year of a rental player really isn’t worth that level of prospect package to any team. Manny Machado was a superstar talent when LA acquired him and he didn’t come close to getting 3 top 50 prospects. (They did get one good prospect.). And while they only acquired him for half a season, he was also making much, much less than $30mill. Of course some of the rumors have the Sox dealing both Price and Betts, in which case the return for Betts will be even less...

I didn’t know not signing any free agents by January 3rd was punting a season. Dopey me. I did think trading Lester and Lackey that July was a better example...

If we assume the Sox pay the rest of the way up to $60mill, Pollock (plus $9mill) works. Sox save about $16mill AAV and get a good, but oft-injured, player back. If LA is interested, so should Bloom be. Herrera would take an addition $40mill, giving the Sox an AAV reduction of about $11mill, barly better than just paying the money. The Phillies would very likely take (alot) less just to be rid of Herrera, but for those same reasons, maybe the Sox should think twice here. A straight up swap for Upton only saved about $10mill, same neighborhood as the suggested $60mill cash payout. But if Upton is on his game, it might be worth it. Although replacing Price might cut into the savings a bit and make the actual reset tough. Belt is flat out not worth it. His $14,6 mil AAV salary plus the additional $26mill ($8.7mill per year) is worse than just paying Price to go away...

Everything hinges on a Price trade (or non-trade). A few of us have toyed around with the simulator to find the best deal for Price, but a lot of times we’ve tried seeing what bad contracts come back. The thing is, the Sox are better off just paying Price to pitch elsewhere, since every $3mill they pay another team counts as only $1mi towards the 2020 luxury tax calculation (with the remaining counting against it in 2021 and 2022). MLBTR writers have said the Sox might need to pay as much as $60 mill to unload Price, or $20 mill per season. If this is correct, and I am going to assume it is since no General Managers are returning my calls, the only contracts they should even consider taking back are Wil Myers and Rougned Odor, as their AAV’s are much lower than actual money owed. Of the two, I would greatly prefer Odor, since he is owed less,has a much lower AAV, plays 2b, has serious power (30+ home runs in 3 of the last 4 seasons) and is a lot younger. Price plus $21mill for Odor ($8.25mill AAV, owed $37.5 mill over 3 years) does come close to the $60 mill payout and still saves the Sox about $16 mill towards the tax, which is more than just paying a team $60 mill would save...

White Sox give OF Luis Robert a 6 year $50mill extension prior to his first MLB at bat, similar to the path they chose with Eloy Jimenez. If Robert is as successful out of the gate as Jimenez, the White Sox are looking that much tougher in a less competitive AL Central...

It’s a pathetic move to save money and nothing else. So now suddenly, after who knows how long, Ellsbury’s medical treatments are an issue? This is almost as bad as when Steinbrenner didn’t like the new CBA and threatened to cut the dental plan for office personnel, you know, the ones whose combined salary is less than a utility infielder...

And Martinez absolutely is opting out after 2020; his contract was written to make him opt out. That $8mill savings on Price/Eovaldi disappears faster than a brother-in-law after borrowing money....

I'd think so, but it is really hard to envision them resetting without dealing Mookie. Unless they do something even stupider, like dealing Bogaerts or Sale...
