  1. All it takes to stop what the Sox did is put one league employee in the video room...
  2. It was doing during a game that is the issue. Replay review is fine any other time. In fact, as far as I can tell, replay review before or after a game to determine signs and sequences is perfectly legal...
  3. I’ve posed that question twice in different contexts. I doubt Cora was involved, since he clearly had better techniques and had not been caught yet. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get punished or fired...
  4. It’s a pretty damn big distinction. The methods the Astros used to steal signs was electronic. The Sox used a runner on second base. The only reason the Sox should be punished as harshly is because this is not their first offense. If, say, the Brewers were doing what Boston did, I would not expect them to be punished the same as Houston...
  5. I would be surprised if Dombrowski was implicated. This wasn’t a complicated plot involving camera installation and a live feed for signs. This was players possibly acting independently checking out video feeds to learn opposing signs and sequences. Since many of them have been plugged into something for a huge chunk of the last 10 years, it’s not surprising they wanted to see video. Not that it’s an excuse, but they might not even known it was illegal. You really can’t suppose that about the Astros. These two scandals are not apples and oranges; they’re apples and basketballs. The only common thread is Cora, and he probably scoffed at the players doing this. “These kids today, thinking they know how to steal signs with their ‘video rooms.’ Harumph! In my day, which was last year, we set up cameras and banged garbage cans. And we liked it!!”
  6. Yes but it was the coupling of it with the deciphering in the replay room that makes this illegal. What works for the Sox is, this is light years different than the Astros live feed electronic sign stealing. If both teams were robbing liquor stores, the Astros pulled out a gun and went straight for the register while the Red Sox were abusing the “take a penny, leave a penny” dish. What works against the Red Sox is this is not the first offense. I don’t think that having a new manager and GM will factor in here either...
  7. Technically the Red Sox never did electronic sign stealing. They did use replay technology to decipher the opponent’s pitch signals and sequences. But live action signs were stolen and relayed by a runner on second base, which as a stand-alone action is perfectly legal...
  8. All the numbers with no one on second are fine, for starters...
  9. Giants DFAd him. I doubt he accepts assignment, so I expect free agency with Giants basically paying the bulk of his $12.2mill guaranteed salary...
  10. I’m with Slasher on this. Just get rid of hand signals. The more I look into it, the more I find out that they all have the same origin, going from coaching signs to umpire signs to catcher signals. They were initially all implemented to accommodate deaf players. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, MLB has a rare moment where it should be proud of the way it accommodated, and did so long before anyone else. But this peculiar origin does make the use of hand signals as a tradition feel a little less important...
  11. But being accountable and being the ringleader are two different things.
  12. Don’t need to if he clears waivers...
  13. The initial Astros report did. But was he also involved in the Sox scandal? If so it seems odd he would champion a less effective (only good with a runner on 2nd) method that was not usable during the post-season, especially since at the time he got away with the method in Houston...
  14. I like Cozart. I do agree he is a good option.
  15. I think the scandal fits, just not in the "harmonious protection" aspect. If DD was fired to save him from this stigma as a favor from Henry for years of service, why was he trashed on his way out the door? Now, Red Sox Tradition might be a acceptable answer here. But beyond that, that part didn't fit...
  16. Not fitting. Henry didn’t “fire” Dombrowski to get ahead of this scandal and preserve the name of a longtime associate and then follow up by planting numerous stories in the media that Dombrowski was difficult to work with and fired due to his attitude. Now it might be more plausible that Dombrowski spent too much, ruined the farm/future, and was difficult to work with. But this was tolerated because the team was winning, and had a recent title. But once the team stopped winning and it was revealed that the one title the Sox did get was due to cheating, it was too much...
  17. Before I go and google around for some dates, what is it about the timing you find significant?
  18. So... the Sox are paralyzed due to pending disciplinary action on Cora, but the Astros - the team with no GM and no manager - are ready to make moves?
  19. Not to mention, he was never much of an enticement anyway. The Giants took on Zack Cozart’s contract to get first rounder Will Wilson. Cozart makes about 2/3 of what Happ makes. Translation - it’s going to take an actual good prospect to get a team interested in Happ. Guys like Tarpley and Cessa won’t work. It might take someone more like Estevan Flovial, Everson Pereira or Clarke Schmidt...
  20. But he decided to let Cora stick around to face the music?
  21. It’s still unexplsined if you like. At best this is a theory. After all, building a $240mill team that finishes 3 games over .500 is not exactly going to net someone any type of job security...
  22. But not in the postseason
  23. The Astros are being so thorough about this, they’ve even bought a new trash can...
  24. The Astros at least had the decency to see what Hinch’s punishment was before firing him. So far Cora hasn’t even been established as guilty...
