  1. And neither will signing a one year deal that puts him in next year free agent class of shortstops. But if he wants to play SS, then Boston was not a great option. The Dodgers were reportedly asking him about 3b, but he did not sign there. His position demands might change over time. But we shall see. Philadelphia and Cincinnati both are in the SS market, and possibly the Yankees, too. So there might be enough chairs none of the three are left standing...
  2. Ten times his salary? Holt made $2.5 mill last year. Some sites list his 2021 salary at $750,000, but this is misleading. It’s not his salary, but Milwaukee’s buyout of a $5mill option. Brock Holt, at 3 years older, is not going to be as cheap as you think...
  3. Probably worth noting that per Chris Cotillo, Semien prefers “to sign as a shortstop.” If he does get less or equal money, it’s probably not from somewhere where he will be playing another position. And it would likely be a last minute deal. But this would put Bloom in the unwinnable position of having not waited long enough to make moves in order to appease a fan base that has spent most of the off-season complaining about his waiting to make moves...
  4. Having either one is bad enough. Having both is a recipe for disaster, which will come in the form of Chris Mazza starts...
  5. Not exactly a high bar. Do you not read my posts about Eovaldi?
  6. So will Semien's agent...
  7. The miniscule tax is not the issue. The issue is the escalating penalties as the payroll increase. Pending he new CBA..
  8. That is the only saving grace. From Henry's POV, my thoughts would be I do not mind paying a luxury tax if I am also making a boatload of $$$$ and winnings some trophies. But I do not want to pay it until that happens. Of course, as you said, Hernandez might have a $7mill AAV, but if enough of it is deferred, it can come down substantially.
  9. The criticism is that while Hernandez can play a lot of positions, he cannot pitch. And that is the Sox biggest need. I don't mind the move. Hernandez was not my top choice for 2B, but he was on my list. But I would like to the Sox sign a starting pitcher, which would bump Tanner Houck or (better yet) Nathan Eovaldi back into the bullpen, thus fixing two holes at once. And I prefer that SP not be named Garrett Richards, as he will in time just create another hole no matter how he is used....
  10. For a bench player, I'd rather have Holt. But of the two if I need a starting 2B, I would take Hernandez...
  11. Well, can we at least assume he will want to enter the period of contention with a clean slate for luxury tax years?
  12. We could get a defensive CF for free if we dealt Benintendi to Atl for Inciarte (Salary: $9mil, but $6.1mill AAV). It's actually not a fair trade, but Atlanta could pitching something to balance it out. Like a freakin' pitcher? Despite it not working out on BTV, I'd consider Inciarte and Kyle Wright for Benintendi...
  13. Great. A guy who makes Eovaldi look like Hoss Radbourne. Richards threw 207 IP in 2015, and only 198 IP combined since then...
  14. More proof that I am right...
  15. And only $9mill for a RP and CF if they sign Odorizzi.
  16. Chavis/Beni? Is Renfroe getting cut?
  17. I’d be very surprised if Casas made MLB this year. He’s only had 7 plate appearances in high A ball, and that’s the highest level he’s played. I even think Downs and his 48 at bats in AA would be rushed. And Duran probably needs to do something good above A ball before he gets promoted. His BABIP-fueled A-ball numbers did not translate to AA at all...
  18. That’s more than I thought he’d get. Hopefully the Sox are not sticking to staying under the tax limit. They still need a SP, RP (CL?) and a CF...
  19. Maybe Benintendi will not be in Boston...
  20. Why? The Sox are loaded with lesser arms already...
  21. Ozuna will cut much deeper into the pitching budget than Kike Hernandez...
  22. The issue of course is what team would want Downs and be willig to ive up a SP for him. Per BTV, he has a similar trade value to Aaron Civale (Cle), Trevor Rogers (Mia), Justus Sheffield (Sea), Dylan Cease (Tex), Brady Singer (KC), Brad Keller (KC), and Lance McCullers. Now how many of these teams would make the named pitcher available for a minor league 2B prospect? You might be able to get McCullers, as he has only one year left on his deal...
  23. Plenty of options still exist...
  24. That late season BABIP really paid off for him, I guess...
