  1. Also, Turner was way off the line, allowing him a very big lead. But I didn't think he was clearly out. Altough I do think umpires lean that way on close plays like that, because it's usually the right call. But if you slow down the replay, you can see his hand touches home plate before he gets tagged. However, his loose helmet gets tagged before he touches home plate. Normally, the helmet is part of the runner, but does that apply when it falls off?
  2. You're ruining his oversimplification. DD did build 3 pennant winners, but he with the Yankees doing some rebuilding...
  3. I was providing supplementary evidence and commentary...
  4. They might not have lived up to expectations or become stars, but there is value in the mere act of making the MLB club and playing for league minimum...
  5. The big difference is the Blue Jays had a team ERA- of 105 while the Sox pitching had a horrific 121. But bear in mind, this was a Sox staff that had no Sale and no ERod and had Ryan Weber as the third highest IP leader (behind Perez and Eovaldi) and had about 50% of their innings come from borderline MLB pitchers who normally sign MiLB contracts. While it will take a major overhaul for the Sox to build one of the best staffs in MLB, simply improving it to be where the Jays staff is (slightly below average) is actually not a difficult task at all, assuming getting back Sale and ERod doesn't do the trick immediately....
  6. good question. The helmet fell on to Barnes' glove as Margot's hand was touching the plate. Had the helmet not fallen off, he would have been safe (unless you argue the falling helmet prevented Barnes from moving his hands forward). Not sure what the rule book says about batting helmets that fall off. But all things considered - light-hitting lefty Kiermaier up against tough lefty Kershaw, Turner playing well off the bag and giving Margot a huge lead), I liked the call...
  7. The Rayshave been resourceful. Heck, Margot nearly pulled off that steal of home (which I think was the right thing to try). But their SP was never their strength, and their going to need some stellar outings to minimize the bullpen usage. The Dodgers have the advantage in this department...
  8. Yeah I took that post down as I thought about it. Duran, too...
  9. A back end starter, a backup catcher and a utility infielder? I'd be a bit hesitant to get excited about Valdez, who can easily turn into Marcus Walden 2.0...
  10. Well, yes. Last off-season he was charged with cutting payroll. This offseason he might actually get to spend on some players...
  11. So you agree that he "didn't trade away any good players" is understating it? Or at the very least, a premature statement?
  12. And even then, some might stick with the organization, but that doesn't necessarily men they stick with the MLB roster...
  13. Like when the Yankees signed Aroldis Chapman to the largest contract ever for a close after the 2016 season (when the Yankees had the same record as the 2019 Red Sox)....
  14. Think that happens if 1) the Sox have Sale and/or ERod or 2) Baltimore is without their 2 best starting pitchers?
  15. In both cases, the Sox decided to trim payroll. (In Ruth’s case, it was also to raise money.)
  16. Only if you’re JD Drew or Santa Claus...
  17. Yeah. Stupid Bloom couldn’t win after inheriting a $240 million dollar team with no farm system and it’s best two pitchers out for the year while he was not only not allowed to spend, but actually ordered to cut payroll. We need a genius like Dombrowski to take this team to the next level by upping payroll to a quarter of a billion dollars while emptying the farm system. Because those older expensive players never age or decline....
  18. A lot of [people make a big deal out of Pedro telling them to sign Papi. But my understanding is players do make those type of recommendations all the time, and a lot of them never happen. The front office still had to make the decision to go through with it...
  19. And the season was hardly his fault. The Sox had a payroll over $190 mill (for a 162 game season) and he had only spent what? $10 mill?
  20. +1 on both counts
  21. And the 2008 Red Sox were down 1-3 to Tampa in the ALCS and trailing 7-0 in the seventh inning of potential elimination game 5, and they rallied and took that game 5 and won game 6 and then... Oh wait...
  22. I think two of them were in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"...
