  1. I look at it this way. Between 2012 and 2019, the Sox finished in last place three times. In two of the following seasons, they came in first. They actually went from worst to first more often than they repeated the last place finish. So if nothing else, we know it is possible. It's not like we looked at that 2012 team and thought "Hey, we're just a closer/starter/first baseman/whatever away". Especially after the Sox unloaded all those contracts in August...
  2. How far from being a competitor did you think the Sox were after their last place finish in 2012? Or their last place finish in 2015?
  3. So the old adage of “Strong up the middle” needs to include 3b about 1/4 of the time...
  4. Tauchman strikes me as Exhibit A in the “Alleged Yankee Sign Stealing Scandal.” The guy couldn’t hit in Coors!! Sanchez has been a league-average hitter (99 OPS+) with some power for the past 3 seasons. He might be great at Fenway, but those ex-Yankee stink bombs just never work out.
  5. Well how close are the Sox to competing? The offense was actually not bad, despite awful seasons from Benintendi and Martinez. The pitching was horrible. But if/when ERod and Sale return, it gets better. Pivetta and Houck might make a decent back end. So they need a starter and some serious bullpen help, and figure out CF and 2b. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that they are competitive next season. Especially when this off-season looks like one where most teams could be cost-cutting...
  6. Per Notin: Why?
  7. I’ve actually seen that with 2b and CF reversed, which doesn’t change up the middle. And isn’t a rule breaker on that maxim. I think I agree with 5GoldGloves that the shift has impacted/should impact how we look at 2b...
  8. While true, the Sox might have RF covered...
  9. So would you say he’d be the same draw as Betts next season?
  10. Well right now all that matters is 2021...
  11. Not really. We could go by jersey sales...
  12. Yes but 1B still remains where you put the guy who can hit but not field. And is also the position least effected by the shift...
  13. Some thoughts on Duran. The Sox do not have a lot of really good prospects that they can afford to keep dealing away, but they do have a fair amount of CF prospects with Duran, Jimenez and Rosario. (And Wilson, if you like him. Although I don't have hopes for his being anything beyond a 4th OF/pinch runner.) Duran is the only one who has played above A-ball, and is the highest ranking. And while there are no guarantees that Jimenez and/or Rosario amount to anything, does it put the Sox in a position where they can deal Duran to get a much more needed player (specifically a pitcher)? The Sox should deal some prospects (not all, but some), and what ones would be deemed not only expendable but also desirable by another team?
  14. Good defense at 3B and RF also helps. Really, the weaker gloves are typically placed at 1B and LF, which are the easiest positions to play....
  15. They definitely need a big move for that exact reason. Alex Verdugo is a good player, but he is not the draw that Betts was. I don't know if this puts Trevor Bauer on the radar, but they will need to make some sort of splash...
  16. Yeah I would consider Chavis to be trade bait as well, except that I don't see any teams getting all excited for him. Maybe in a salary dump deal, but not much else. His only real asset is that he works cheaply...
  17. Arguably, the presence of Jimenez and Rosario makes potential Duran trade bait...
  18. Really the only question surrounding Devers is - first or third base? With Cora back in the fold, the most likely answer is third base. This leaves 1B open for Dalbec or Chavis, and very likely means another LHH 1B will be brought into the mix. Mitch Moreland headlines a group of possibilities that also includes Matt Adams, Carlos Santana, Jake Lamb, Justin Smoak, Logan Morrison and Danny Murphy. And also likely Travis Shaw once Toronto non-tenders him...
  19. I am still operating on the assumption that Bauer would avoid pitching in pinstripes with Cole, since they allegedly hate each other dating back to when they were teammates at UCLA...
  20. I still expect Gausman to follow suit...
  21. But Dalbec has more power, isn't limited to hitting just pitchers who throw with the left arm, and can throw a baseball with authority...
  22. I wonder what it would have taken to elicit that response from Mel Allen? Maybe Phil Rizzuto executing the Hidden Ball Trick by jamming the ball up his ass?
  23. I like them because I can talk to myself without drawing looks...
  24. Comparing defensive numbers over a 20 game sample is a useless venture...
  25. Does a bear s*** on the moon? Dalbec will come back to Earth. but we all know what pre-emptive measure the Sox will take. Mitch Moreland...
