  1. RIP Willie Mays is now the oldest living member of the Hall of Fame...
  2. I didn't think he was candid at all. His reasoning sounded more political. The reason he was unable to get Snell was the Sox simply had no way of matching the offer the Padres gave. And even trying would have done nothing except maybe get the Padres to up their offer. It's not like Snell's contract - which Bloom probably wrote for a small market team - was all that daunting, and it's not like Bloom has no knowledge of prospect attrition rates. The Sox were going to be outbid by a team that simply had a much greater abundance of players to deal from. End of reason.
  3. Exactly. The notion that they won’t go big because they don’t think they can compete this year is folly. You have to get the player(s) you want when they’re available. And unless you only sign them to 1 year deals, they’ll be around for 2021 as well...
  4. Of course I’m now reading the Mets have maybe $15mill left in the budget, which, along with the acquisition of Carrasco, probably means they won’t move on Bauer. Which of course leaves the question “OK, so who does?”
  5. He did? Fangraphs had 0.9 fWAR for Montgomery and 0.9 fWAR for Eovaldi. Why is Montgomery's 0.9 better? (B-R gives Eovaldi 1.3 bWAR and Montgomery 0.1 bWAR. Much, much bigger gap.) Eovaldi's career fWAR is 12.9 and Montgomery's is 4.0 So... not sure how Montgomery has the higher career WAR either. Unless you meant he has the higher career high fWAR. In which case, still wrong, as Eovaldi's is 3.3 vs Montgomery's best of 2.6. You are correct that Montgomery 2 years and 10 months younger. So, one right, I guess. But that is a pretty small gap considering he has 730 less IP. He is NOT making that total up in 3 years...
  6. I think he already made one. That said, they are still probably the most likely landing spot for Bauer...
  7. Yes. Also, markedly improve the team....
  8. But that "suspect" Braves team has a very young and extremely solid core both on the mound (Soroka, Fried, Anderson) and in the field (Acuna, Albies, Freeman). And they have more farm depth to supplement it, either through direct promotion or through trades. A deal like this was the Mets' best shot to be taken seriously, but any claim they have to the top of the NL East is tenuous at best...
  9. Yes you can get owner salaries, but you also ave no say in the player's deal. You take on whatever years he has left, for example. As well as any bonuses, NTC, etc. Free agency is generally more expensive but also allows the team some say in the terms...
  10. So how long until some blogger on Fansided asks why Bloom was asleep at the wheel and did not acquire Lindor either?
  11. Not really. Prospect capital represents potential major leaguers at minimum wage, and trading them typically involves taking on higher salaries. Free agents? Trading prospects? In both cases, you're going to be spending more money...
  12. It was a snarky way of saying "no one is doing anything". It's January 7th, and so far the biggest free agent contract has gone to James McCann. ...
  13. By moving the top tier players to the other league, teams can benefit from the return they get and not have to compete with the star's new team for postseason spots. Cleveland is still a good team and even with Carrasco (and Clevinger) gone, they still might have the best rotation in the American League...
  14. Carrasco's deal (2 yrs/$27mill) was favorable, but his health was not. He was diagnosed with leukemia a couple years ago. But the Tribe has dealt Clevinger and now Carrasco in the last 4 months, and still has Bieber, Aaron Civale, Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, and Zac Plesac for the rotation...
  15. The "useless" BTV site was pretty accurate with this deal... https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/trade-36124/
  16. SS Amed Rosario, SS/2B Andres Gimenez, OF Isaiah Greene, and RHP Joe Wolf headed to Cleveland...
  17. Sure. But then I'd sign my own mother to that kind of deal...
  18. So.. you on board now? Also my understanding is Sugano is more of a Cat Guy...
  19. Much like Eovaldi, the problem with Hill is not the talent...
  20. But maybe people would stop eating his legs...
  21. What does he need to do to earn your love? He's pitched well in his career, his contract requests do not appear unreasonable, and he is probably very nice to his mother, even when she does not deserve it. Also he probably owns a puppy. Or knows someone who does...
  22. Based on what?
  23. If the Sox can get Odorizzi for 3 yrs / $39 mill, it should probably happen now...
  24. By 5pm today, Tomoyuki Sugano will haveto make a decision about what American team he will accept a deal from. Reportedy the Sox are still in the running, but no word about whether o rnot any team has reached his demands for a deal greater than the one fellow countryman Yusei Kikuchi received from the Mariners (4 yrs $56mill), which apparently Sugano wants. As he has a 4 year offer with 3 opt outs already from the Yomiuri Giants, it does seem likely he will return to Japan and try again next year...
  25. One potential acquisition might be Steve Piscotty (3 DRS, 3.7 UZR in 1171 innings in 2019-2020). Piscotty is owed $16mill over the next 2 seasons, which might not agree with Oakland's budget. The A's do have a couple outfielders in Dustin Fowler and Skye Bolt they could use to replace Piscotty if they deal him. The one stumbling block might be Bay Area native Piscotty, who requested a trade to go back home a few years ago to take care of his ailing mother (who did eventually pass away), a request that St. Louis accommodated despite it not necessarily being in the best interest of their team. So whether or not Piscotty wants to leave the Bay Area or can block moves or whatever is all unknown to me. However, he is one guy whose bat looks like it might play well at Fenway...
