Absolutely true. And if the Sox were not concerned, Sale certainly appeared to be. He spent his entire career as the poster boy for underpaid, and could have easily gotten a deal in the neighborhood of David Price's if healthy, but instead took one in the neighborhood of Patrick Corbin. He missed almost the entire second half of 2018, and his 2019 he had a career high in ERA (by a full run!!!), FIP and HR/9 and a career low in IP and ERA+. That he had 14 good IP in ST means nothing. (Was he even facing actual MLB hitters?) Since that contract kicked in, he has 0 IP. It always looked to me like he knew he should take a deal now rather than wait and see about the market. And it may have turned out to be the right move for him to take the deal when he did. Maybe he wanted to stay in Boston? OK. But so did Eovaldi, and he still made sure he stayed for as much as possible...

Of course it doesn't. If it did, our staring shortstop would still be Pedro Ciriaco.

Last year, no pitcher threw more than 84 IP. I think the logic behind 14 pitchers is to not wear down the staff. If other teams are not doing it, it might become an advantage for the Sox, even if one of the pitchers is Austin Brice...

So with an equal amount of inside info, you're claiming Sale was healthy and the evidence is 14 spring training innigs? Some facts: 1) He was shut down due to injury concerns in 2018. 2) IN 2019, he made his fewest starts and threw the fewest IP in his career since becoming an MLB starting pitcher. 3) He missed 2020 and is out for the bulk of 2021. 4) He spent the first 6 years of his career on one of the most underpaid contracts in MLB history, and the extension he signed was absolutely far less than he would have gotten as a free agent. The deal he did sign was for roughly the same money as Partick Corbin received that same off-season. And while Corbin is good, his career in no way equals Sale's. What appeared to happen to me is Sale knew he was having some issues and figured trying to pitch an entire season would cost him money by raising more health questions. So he played it safe and took the extension...

Less money. Sale, or to be more precise, Sale’s agent, probably had a good idea what a healthy Sale can make as a free agent. So why did Sale settle for that offer? Certainly his agent - whose advice he pays for - didn’t recommend it, especially since Sale spent the bulk of his career playing on a contract universally regarded as one of the most team-friendly (re: underpaid) in MLB...

Reportedly Verdugo’s favorite position is CF. But I would prefer him in RF and let Cordero try CF. Of course if Duran can take over the position, that works, too. They didn’t move Duran from 2b to CF so that he could become a corner OF in The Show... -

He only made 7 starts and threw 29 IP in the second half of 2018. And in three post season series, he started 3 games and went over 4 IP one time. Just because he wasn’t on the 60 day IL doesn’t mean he was healthy. Sale was MIA for most of the second half of 2018, signed his extension, and followed up with a very questionable 2019. And then missed 2020. It really looks like his problems started back in 2018. And that is NOT revisionist history...

Let’s not pretend there is no relationship between owing and spending. The bottom line is the Sox - even after two years of not spending - still have one of the highest payrolls in MLB. Now maybe Bloom will never get the greenlight to exceed the tax limit. But even that is not the same as saying they’ll never spend. It’s not that difficult to compile a team of 40 players making a total of $206 million, especially if half of them are pre-arbitration or making MiLB money...

I never said “only.” But yeah, both can be had. I was debating about Robinson Cano as another one. I’d deal him for Price or Heyward, but I can’t see either of those NL teams taking a potential deadweight contract for DH who struggles to hit...

So now that I have already seen two pitchers on my fantasy team get injured, I a m thinking I might have to pick up Jameson Taillon to replace one of them. Thus ensuring his season is filled with injuries and disappointment. Sorry, Yankee fans. I haven't had one of your pitchers on my team since I extended Luis Severino to a max contract prior to the 2019 season. (True story!!)
