  1. Also, is Mata still on the 40 man? He’s not going to pitch this year, so moving him to the 60 day IL would free up a spot to add a waiver claim. Hey, Tanner Roark needs work. When you get released in the middle of a lucrative contract, you might not get so picky about bullpen jobs. Although MLB has too many pitchers named “Tanner” as it is. Not sure any team should have two...
  2. DHern and Valdez seem to have fallen out of trust or are having issues physically. If that’s the case, why keep them up? Both have optic and this bullpen has no shortage of mop up guys...
  3. If the Sox do anything to the pen, far more likely they demote one or more of Valdez, Hernandez or Taylor, although Taylor appears to be redeeming himself a little. I’d just assume call up Houck, who could have a good career as a relief pitcher, but I don’t think that’s the plan. So who would they call up? The most realistic candidates on the 40 man roster are Bazardo and Brewer. Groome isn’t likely. Not they could put Mata on the 60 day injured list, right? That would create an opening for anyone else. But there aren’t a slew of other candidates. The best options from the rest might be Walden, Gossett, McCarthy or long shot Caleb Simpson. Not necessarily much improvement...
  4. Why DFA players with options? One of the reasons to DFA players is to send them down after they clear waivers, but players with options need not clear waivers before being sent down. If he is using the DFA process them from the 40 man roster, the options become irrelevant (except that they make a player a more attractive claim candidate for another team).. The goal is probably to maintain some control of as many players as possible, but if Bloom wants to promote someone on the 40 man roster, he needs to clear a space and in that case, he would have to DFA a player he feels is likely to clear or does not mind losing altogether. Marcus Wilson is probably the most likely candidate to clear waivers. Even Brice or Brewer would probably get claimed, as young, cheap pitchers with a couple years control and MLB experience are not likely to clear waivers. Not that I would mind losing Brice or Brewer. That said, releasing Brice and promoting Brewer is also not the worst idea. I just don't see what he sees in Brice...
  5. I think of AA as the most important developmental step, as it’s where all the best players from each organization’s A ball teams filter into one team. Most AAA teams are loaded with players on MiLB contracts, many of whom are aging former major leaguers, or with the bulk of their 40 man roster players not on the parent club.
  6. My point. When was the last time you bought a keg? Has anyone of legal drinking age ever bought a keg?
  7. Barrels is fine. The word screws has a lot of meanings, some too delicate for a family-oriented forum such as this. Nobody talks about barrels any more, except when discussing the price of oil...
  8. Exactly. Which is part of why “barrels” and “extra base hits” do not always have an obvious relationship...
  9. And you can double on a well placed blooper...
  10. Actually Barnes' struggles were typically when working on minimal rest. Second day of back-to-backs were when he was just flat out ineffective...
  11. Dalbec's OPS is .579. Certainly not good. In fact, quite bad. But nowhere near .300. His BA is below the Mendoza line, however...
  12. Seen it and agree on all counts. I used to call one of my fantasy teams "The Tampico Stogies". (I'm down to one team this year, and am using the Gashouse Gorillas. My Bugs Bunny fandom got he best of me.) "Little Big League" also was a movie that took a ridiculous premise and turned it into a surprisingly good and well-written baseball movie as well.
  13. So in the category of movies about banged-up veteran catchers trying to provide fatherly guidance to hard-throwing phenoms with control issues amidst a cast of baseball groupies, die-hard Christians, and teammates practicing voodoo, would you say it's your second favorite movie?
  14. The second Tim Tebow?
  15. If the Sox are in the market for a corner OF at the deadline, I would suspect someone like Corey Dickerson or Kole Calhoun over Bryant...
  16. “Major League” was a complete ripoff of “Bull Durham.” You just know the whole pitch for that movie was “What if we take the characters from ‘Bull Durham’, but rename ‘em and put ‘em in the majors?!?”
  17. It’s not like anyone said Renfroe and/or Cordero are better than Betts. But I do find it interesting that both combine to make less than Jacoby Ellsbury is still making with the Yankees, especially considering Ellsbury hasn’t played a game in nearly 4 years...
  18. I’d pass on both in favor of a sports movie devoid of ghosts, magic, paranormal, animals taking the field, or Tony Danza. I look at, say, “Brian’s Song” as a good sports movie. Somehow I think you’d pass saying “A football movie without a mule?!??! Gimme the remote!!”
  19. Either way, it makes me like Cora more...
  20. Agreed. Certainly some other combo on BTV can be found that works on that site, but probably not one the Cubs would accept. The Sox might find deadline acquisitions difficult if the other teams insist on Houck as part of the return package...
  21. Maybe they do, but Cora answers with an unprintable profanity-laced tirade....
  22. You do have an affinity for some of the worst sports movies ever made...
  23. Per BTV, the Sox could get him for a package of Houck and Thad Ward. That’s not an unreasonable package, although it might not be the best offer. But is it a smart move given that Bryant is not very likely to sign an extension? His agent (you know who) has been battling to get him to free agency for almost his entire career...
  24. And Mookie came up in this post why?
  25. Exactly. The Arizona Fall League, for example, has a season maybe 25-30 games long. Yet it gets made such a big deal of..
