    When asked what else Duran had to do, Cora reportedly replied “Get at bats.” So apparently the Sox are not as convinced after 82 plate appearances. And really, should they be? And Danny Santana has certainly bought them some time. The whole “Cordero is killing this team and needs work” argument is yesterday’s news; how many games has Cordero even started since Santana was recalled? Dalbec is a letdown right now. But Casas is not as likely to be promoted. He has like 80 PA total above A ball. Also, unlike Duran, Casas is 21 and service time clocks are a legitimate concern. (Want to lose him to free agency at age 27?). I think he’s a lot less likely. Especially since he’s pretty likely to struggle as much as Dalbec, if not more, if he gets promoted. And then they’re are other issues - like who do you let go?

    Certainly some of the teams will provide great competition, like Korea, Japan and China. But those first round match ups against the best that, say, Uzbekistan can muster might not be so tough. That said, it’s baseball, so any team with one pitcher at the top of his game can give his team a great chance...

    I doubt anyone drafts for position if need. No one what they’ll need 3-4 years down the line, and a huge chunk of players switch positions in the minors. Pitching vs hitting? Sure, they might divide players up that way. But no point in taking a 3b early because it’s a weakness in the system, only to wait 3 years to find out the guy you drafted mid-first round fits better in RF, and also cannot hit inside breaking pitches. I think teams are more prone to draft with “likeliness of making MLB” in mind. They can work out the positions later...

    In the long run, you probably won’t mind...

    So banning the shift will have very little effect. Hitters will still swing for launch angles and exit velocity. Balls will still have higher seams. MLB just needs to allow teams to employ strategies. I do agree that they shouldn’t alter standard game equipment from year to year...

    Hey, just look at the names with no hitters this year. Sure, Kluber has a history of great seasons and awards. And Joe Musgrove and John Means are both good, albeit not great pitchers. But Spencer Turnbull? Carlos Rodon? Wade Miley? I mean, Wade Miley now has more career no hitters than Greg Maddux. And last year, career minor leaguer Alec Mills tossed one. So yes, any MLB pitcher can have a great day...

    So it's the inability of the hitters to try to adapt to the shift, like I said. But then I bet even if the shift went away, we would still see hitters emphasizing launch angle and exit velocity...

    Then allow the small market teams their creativity. If you think baseball is unwatchable when a left-handed hitter hits into the shift, try taking in a full 162 game season in Pittsburgh after payroll has been cut to the same amount as the toll on the Seventh Street Bridge...

    The shift is a result of economic disparity that forces the small market teams to be creative to stay competitive. It’s no surprise strategies that annoy traditional, boring fans like the shift and the opener all originate in Tampa. Get some economic parity in the game and a lot of this goes away...

    Also no more breaking balls. Or fastballs over 85mph. Or under 85mph, either. I don’t get some fans. “The shift is killing baseball! No one gets hits!” Last year the cry was “the juiced ball is killing baseball!! Everyone is getting hits!”

    You obviously did not watch tonight’s Red Sox game. And I don’t get all this “ban the shift.” It’s a DEFENSIVE ALIGNMENT, not a performance-enhancing drug. If it’s making baseball unwatchable, blame the hitters who refuse to learn how to hit around it...

    Tampa baseball was always a bad idea. About 1/4 of the residents of Tampa are retired New Yorkers who brought their pinstriped blood to Florida. Sometimes in little IV bags...

    Yeah but at 34, a multi year deal of 3-4 years is still possible, as history has shown. At 35, probably significantly less so. He’ll opt out if he thinks he can get a better deal. I have my doubts he wants his next contract hinging on his age 35 season, especially if his age 34 season is a really good one...

    Calling up Duran at least has the advantage of being a reversible change if he flops. The biggest obstacle might be whether or not the Sox want to reverse it if he flops...

    He might. If guaranteed years mean more to him than salary. The biggest factor will be what his agent tells him he can get him. Also not sure why you think a $14mill AAV is insulting and then think a $15mill AAV should do the trick...

    Again, if he gets a deal like Nelson Cruz got at the same age, he gets more money and years. And at his age, he might prioritize years over money...
