  1. Playing Hobson like that was stupid. What he did to Fisk was borderline criminal. That 1978 season saw Pudge play in 157 games (out of 163). He caught in 154 games, starting 150 games of those and played 148 complete games at catcher. That was after Zimmer had also abused him in 1977, when he played in 151 games, caught in 149 and caught 144 complete games.
  2. I think a day off every couple weeks is fine. That would mean a field player would be in the 149-150 game range. Catching should be split roughly 60-40. On this year's team, Yoshida seems to have problems playing 6-7 games a week. His slow streaks have happened when he plays more than that. We can complain about it all we want, but the data says he does. It's probably a cultural thing; not sure how Japanese schedules work. One thing for sure is the Japanese teams never switch time zones. As notin said, you have to give the bench guys some playing time; else, when needed, they are going to be worthless.
  3. It's still BS. If for some reason Devers played 1 inning at short, the Sox cumulative ss fwar would jump from -1.0 to +1.1.
  4. Per my reply to mvp, the actual ss numbers are probably lower than what was shown, since the numbers listed are totals for anyone who played short this year and not just as ss. Lazy “journalism” by Milliken.
  5. Numbers are ********. Reyes has only played 24 games at SS Chang 33 Story 3 Dalbec 1 Hamilton numbers are right; all his games were as a SS Hernandez 64 Chang’s WAR as a SS is probably about right; most of his appearances have been at that position and since he can’t hit, most of that number is from fielding. Hernandez’s WAR as a SS is likely lower. His hitting has sucked anyway, but he did play in 21 games at 2B and 14 games in CF (obviously there were games where he played multiple positions). The eye test says his WAR contribution at those positions was positive.
  6. Sales not bring stashed. Today was his second outing and he’s thrown a total of 6 1/3 innings with Worcester. He’s not the type to milk it; his next start will be with Boston, and at most he’ll make 1 more with Worcester. I’m thinking he’ll start a Friday or Saturday against the Tigers.
  7. I think plays in the field can be robbery, but they have to be truly outstanding plays. Certainly nothing like what OB says are thefts.
  8. You should listen to the radio guys (mostly Castiglione and Flemming, but also McDonough when he’s been there. Merloni as well.). They have not held a lot back this year in the way of criticism.
  9. Hopefully the Royals have reverted to form. Second straight loss today after a 7 game win streak. Unfortunately, the Sox hitters have gone silent again, which could mean anything the next year 4 days. Fortunately for me, I’ll miss watching the series. KC is one of the blackout teams for me plus I’ve got 72 holes at Geneva National to play while that series is happening.
  10. Both. Paxton didn’t have it Friday. It happens. But continuous bullpen games take its toll. You are by definition taking lesser pitchers or guys who can’t go more than an inning or 2 and hoping each and every one of them has it. Once in a rotation is tough enough. Twice is a recipe for less than stellar results. Back to back bullpen games is just plain stupid. And let’s face it, the Jays have been underperforming all year. Bad week for the Sox yo have them seemingly get back to the team they can be.
  11. Once again, you have screwed up the formatting. There has to be
  12. I described how they battled just to get to the playoff game. Even that game was a microcosm of the season. Sox led early. Yanks a seemingly insurmountable 5-2 lead with 2 innings left. Sox battle back, getting 2 runs off of Goose Gossage in the 8th. Piniella makes a stop on Remy base hit in the 9th that Lou never saw until it bounced into his glove (it’s an easy triple if that doesn’t happen) and the Yanks hold on.
  13. Always has been. The guy everyone hates unless he’s on your team.
  14. Unless Bloom is fired, I don’t see Cora back next season. I think he’s had it with Chaim and having to go out everyday to reporters and try to put lipstick on this pig.
  15. Yup. That team had guts. People forget that 78 team fell 3 1/2 games back with 14 games to go. They cut it to 1 game out with 8 games to go; they proceeded to win all 8, and it almost wasn’t enough as the Yankees won every day for a week until the last day of the season when Cleveland beat them and the Sox finally caught them. Plus it was all or nothing. No wildcard.
  16. Randy, is this supposed to be readable?
  17. Perhaps we should just move on to summary execution. That would show him. You have no idea why he was benched yesterday and neither does anyone else outside the clubhouse. None whatsoever.
  18. I believe you are correct.
  19. Randy Put the UOTE] back at the beginning of post 120 after the [Q; otherwise its going to screw up all replies to it (not to mention without it, it's unreadable. Ditto post 7087 in the Realistic View thread. Better, just put your reply below your quoted post. It harder to delete format that way.
  20. Cora adamant about not saying why Verdugo didn’t play other than saying “today one guy wasn’t available”. Said there a chance he plays tomorrow. Verdugo did something that really got to Cora.
  21. Agree. The players can whine about them not adding pitching, but it’s the position players who consistently don’t advance runners. It’s the position players making physical and mental errors. Once in a while is one thing, but it’s too common.
  22. Not to mention even if you pull it off, it involves real pain for the fans. The Orioles had the following records in 2018, 2019 and 2021 they had records of 47-115, 54-108 and 52-110 (25-35 in 2020). The Astros' fans had to endure seasons of 56-106, 55-107 and 51-111 from 2011-2013. To those who call for tearing it down, is that what you want?
  23. No offense on this trip. 3-2-3-2-6-3 isn’t going to win a lot of games.
  24. Looking back on the series, the difference between the two bullpens is the difference. Mariners have hit the Sox pen hard. Sox have not done much with Seattle’s.
  25. He’d also thrown 20 pitches in the 5th, allowing 2 hits. I’m sure Cora has data on 3rd time through order and pitches thrown as well. He’s pretty much been a 4-5 inning guy all year. Maybe a couple times into the 6th.
