  1. That's a mistake on Betts' part. He has to go and draw the throw, even if he is put out. Ideally, he gets in a rundown and let's Hanley get to 3rd (and maybe JBJ to 2nd). EDIT- But of course with the kind of year Betts is having, it works out for him.
  2. I was about to ask if Xander can bunt and should he; the first pitch answered that question.
  3. Well, the 2nd wasn't pretty, but Clay has done his job so far. I certainly would have signed up for 4 innings and 1 run. Can they squeeze one more out of him? I say you let him start the inning but if there's trouble, get him out. Can't push it too hard the 3rd trip through the order.
  4. Problem is those type of guys are 20th century. With 12 (and sometimes 13) man pitching staffs, teams can't afford to stash a good field/weak bat type on the bench. In the days of 10-11 man staffs, they could.
  5. Can't see it but let me guess. Fastball down the middle taken for strike one. Hittable pitch fouled off for strike 2. Breaking pitch down and away swung over the top of for strike 3. Am I close?
  6. If it came to that, he would have 3 of Pedroia, Ortiz, Holt or Shaw to ph for the pitcher(s) (I'm assuming one of them would be used to hit for Holoday). Pomeranz has some decent numbers for a pitcher, so he could be used as well (might be very useful in a bunting situation). All but Ortiz could be used in the double switch game as well, to postpone a pitcher "needing" to hit.
  7. No they wouldn't. The midweek games are not the same as the Sunday night ones. They would have just carried a different game.
  8. Not much; it's not that long a flight, maybe 1 1/2 hours. A bigger concern is what time did they leave? More than likely today's game will not be that big a deal, tomorrow is when they will really feel it.
  9. Per Baseball Reference, Leon is not a rookie. He was on the 2015 rookie list, but is not on the 2016 one. The limit is 130 ABs or 45 days on the active roster (except for DL time) so he lost his rookie status last season; got to remember he had nearly 100 ABs with the Nationals before being traded to the Red Sox. Add that to the 128 he had with Boston last year and he was well over 200 ABs before the 2016 season started.
  10. Back to the newly named topic. As I posted above, August 18, 1967 - Tony C. Was beaned by Jack Hamilton of the Angels. Hard to believe it was that long ago. He was only 22 years old and already had hit over 100 homers.
  11. What's MLB got to do with any of it? The only time a start time is dictated is when national television (ESPN or Fox) is involved. Otherwise the home team sets it. Every Thursday Tiger home game this year has been a 1:08 start. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, this is the only time it opens a series; the others were/are the final game.
  12. Every Thursday home game for the Tigers this season is a 1:08 EDT start. Unfortunately for the Sox, this is the only instance of such a game starting a series.
  13. Yes it does. Had Davis not taken him deep it would have counted as a shutout.
  14. Still going to be an issue getting to Detroit at a decent hour given the weather forecast.
  15. ESPN just showed a shot of the field; left looks like it has a couple of inches of water on it from the tarp to the wall and right looks like it may be headed in that direction.
  16. ESPN said Buchholz was flying ahead to Detroit but his flight was cancelled so he's back at Camden Yards.
  17. It wouldn't even involve dropping a player off the 40 man; right now there's only 39 names on it. My guess is you may see Moncada added on in a couple weeks; Portland's season ends around Labor Day so he'd only be missing 4-5 AA games at that point.
  18. A "This Date in Red Sox History" thread could be interesting. So here goes: 112 years ago Jesse Tannehill pitched a no-hitter against the White Sox. Now tomorrow is a bad anniversary: 49 years ago Thursday, Tony C. was beaned.
  19. Kimbrel has gotten the job done in save situations, he's 21 out of 23 chances (plus the "hold" he was given in the 4 walk game last week, he didn't blow the save but he did pitch his way out of it.) He also is unscored on in 33/40 appearances. When Kimbrel blows up, he blows up spectacularly, but his issues have generally come in tied games and games where the Sox are behind. Given his psyche, I don't see putting him in a set-up role as working very well. And I acknowledge he's had some high wire acts, but overall he's gotten the job done. Not to mention he's got close to 250 major league saves over the past 6-7 years. Even Mariano Rivera, the GOAT, would blow a few saves a year. Barnes has been spectacular at times and decidedly mediocre at others. Yeah, he's 1/1 in saves and has 10 holds, but he's been scored on in 15 out of 46 appearances and only lately has begun making regular appearances in the 8th inning. Now is not the time to experiment.
  20. I was matching the language from a post, but in fairness, I should have put constant in quotation marks. That's what happens when one posts during a boring teleconference. As for the second part, I'd just as soon he go 9 and win 10-0 (much more fun, especiallly against Showalter). The O's have firepower though; Trumbo and Davis seem like they can break their bat and still hit it over the fence sometimes.
  21. Well aware of that; he still has the wrong poster. /////////
  22. Wrong newbie; the constant Price whiner is a different poster.
  23. There are some who don't always seem to feel that way.
  24. Bundy has been pitching really well since they put him into the rotation a month ago. Overall, in 6 starts, he's 4-2 with an ERA of 2.76 and a WHIP of 0.86 over 32 2/3 innings. In August, he's gone 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA and a WHIP of 0.64 in 18 2/3 innings. A couple weeks ago, he shutdown the Rangers on 1 hit over 7 innings, and we know how well they can hit. This does not figure to be an easy game for the Red Sox, which made last night's win really big.
  25. Big win with Sox nemesis Tillman on the bump tomorrow for the O's
