  1. So what would your line-up be then?
  2. Hard to believe, but allowing 2 runs in 2 2/3 innings last night actually lowered his ERA from 7.54 to 7.46.
  3. Bogaerts' ABs are becoming so predictable. Take 2 strikes (one of them very hittable) and then flail at a slider.
  4. Price in the clubhouse will have nothing to do on whether they get past the first round or even get to the first round. If people think getting rid of him and replacing him in the rotation with Fister or Johnson is going to change this team for the better, they are nuts. If Betts, Bogaerts and Hanley don't start hitting like they are capable of, it's not going to matter. Beni and Bradley getting a little more consistent would help as well.
  5. Well that's true. But he is going on both Tuesday at the latest. So long as he remains on the active 25 roster (or DL), no option year is burned. Unless he completely flops, he will stay there the rest of the year. Come to think of it, even if he does get off to a very rough start, I doubt they send him down.
  6. No option year has been burned yet. Options don't kick in until a player is added to the 40 man roster. If they send him down between now and September 1, then and only then is an option year burned. Otherwise, he still has 3 left.
  7. That theory works best if the pitcher is not throwing strikes. Going into this inning Bridwell had thrown 29 srikes and 12 balls. I know we all get upset when seemingly every batter stands there and takes get me over fastballs for strike one constantly. I can't see the game, so I don't know if Bridwell is throwing hittable pitches on strike one and the Sox aren't hitting them or if they are going after pitcher's pitches. I do remember Bridwell doing pretty well against the Sox at Fenway earlier this year.
  8. Many of the Sox pitchers are pitching high in the strike zone (at least to my untrained eye). As the article pointed out, modern swings allow low balls get hit, but that comes at a price; it is harder than ever to get to the higher pitches. Sox pitchers are getting a lot of strikeouts on high pitches. I just looked at the defensive stats and the Sox are near the bottom of the list in number of assists but have more putouts than any other team. This, while not a perfect indicator, tells me they are getting a lot of outs on pop ups and fly balls as well, which one would also expect from balls up in the zone.
  9. They most certainly did not discover it. As one Hall of Fame pitcher put it 60+ years ago: "Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing." - Warren Spahn
  10. Now that I've had the chance to see the DVR, Fister was, to put it charitably, indeed less than stellar. But the game turned when Holt lost the ball in the sun. It cost the Sox 4 runs, Fister a bunch of extra pitches and may well have cost them the game. The pen plays out differently if the Sox are ahead instead of behind.
  11. Not saying it was a smart move, just that it may not have mattered given the way the inning played out. I'm guessing Betts has the green light and they give him a sign when not to run. OTOH, he has to use that green light with some game awareness.
  12. I know you can't assume everything plays out, but would Young's ball to 3rd have been a DP? (Can't see the game, so that's why I'm asking).
  13. I don't get the Abad bashing here. He's done okay this season for the last or next to last guy in the pen. 2.70 ERA in 30 innings, 1.100 WHIP, 3:1 strike out to walk ratio and has 23 scoreless appearances in 30 games. He sucked last year. He's been pretty decent this year.
  14. So you tell him it's use was okay because he wasn't using the word at anyone, and then turn around and do just that. Nice double standard. You can have the last word.
  15. It's generational. The older generation (like me) was taught the use of the word was low-class. Younger folks don't seem to think that way. It is what it is. And just like you, harmony is entitled to his opinion. Based on subsequent posts, I note that it's you being the jerk here, not harmony.
  16. My guess is it's a last tryout to see if he has anything left to offer. Given what I'm seeing on Gamecast, he's failing it, and with Johnson and Velazquez showing they can at least be serviceable #6 pitchers, the tryout does not need to (and will not) continue. Farrell indicated he's be heading to the pen after this game, but I'm guessing he'll be released very soon, possibly before they head to the coast tonight.
  17. Those numbers correspond with when he broke his toe. He's been trying to play through it, but it's not working. Travis was starting against most lefthanders and he wasn't hitting at all either (his slash line for the same 28 days is .192/.313/.230). Farrell stuck Moreland in there because of the utter futility of the rest of the line-up. Moreland should not be hitting 4th, he should be in th 6-7 hole. That's where they envisioned him. He is, however, a streaky player (as he showed early in the season). I think that toe is bothering him a lot more than they are letting on. I'm hard pressed to think of anyone on this team who should hit cleanup right now. Betts has been scuffling. Bogaerts has as well. Hanley has had brief 2-3 game stretches where he seems to be hammering the ball and then quickly morphs back into blah. I asked you the other night who you would have batting 4th; you never answered. As I stated, right now, no one merits the spot. Unfortunately, they make you pencil somebody in.
  18. Pretty sure Holt took Pablo's 40-man slot when they activated him off the 60-day DL (players on the 60 day don't count towards the 40-man)
  19. It was a feeble attempt at sarcasm.
  20. Who do you propose hit there? Right now, nobody should be hitting there but someone has to. And he did drive in the only run they've scored in the last 25 innings.
  21. The way they are hitting, what difference will it make?
