  1. Magic Numbers: Division - 5 Wild Card - 0
  2. Your math is wrong, it's 6.
  3. Magic Numbers: Division - 6 Wild Card - 0
  4. Robin Ventura. He forgot the #1 rule of any battle, know thy enemy, in this case, never try and wrestle/fight with a guy who ranches cattle in the off-season.
  5. A special night when he was throwing almost effortlessly. No stressful or long innings, most with a big lead. 4 runners all night. Same number of pitches over 5-6 innings with lots of guys on base is a different story. 1-0 game is a different story.
  6. One thing that favors Young is he's had decent success as a pinch hitter this year (.400/.550/.950). Not so much when he starts. Davis has done nothing at the plate this season either before or since coming to Boston; his role would be strictly speed. Davis is the better OF.
  7. Ding ding ding. He had a great first 10 games in Boston, but after that he tailed off quickly, and didn't do much offensively once he went down to AAA (.227/.283/.602). The fact that Lin isn't playing now (in lieu of Holt or Marrero) tells you all you need to know about his potential for being on a post season roster.
  8. I'm not too worried about the 8 innings; they were pretty stress free. 4 runners over 8 innings and did one ever even get to second? 111 pitches over 5-6 innings with guys constantly on base takes a lot more out of a pitcher than the way it happened last night.
  9. If they clinch the division before the last day, you send Sale out on the 1st for 2-3 innings (or maybe 30-40 pitches). If they skip his start, he's be throwing on the side anyway. Then you can bring him back for Game 1 on "short" rest without it being too big a deal and still give him a chance to keep sharp.
  10. Magic Numbers: Division - 8 Wild Card - 0 (Red Sox have clinched a postseason spot)
  11. So he goes tonight, off day tomorrow. Do you have him go on normal rest, meaning he would pitch Monday and a week from Saturday? He would then be set up to pitch games 1 and 5 of the ALDS. Or do you keep the rotation intact, meaning he pitches Tuesday and then is set up if there's a meaningful game on Sunday, Oct 1. If he goes on the 1st for more than a couple innings, he probably is only available for Game 2 of the ALDS (ALDS starts on the 5th).
  12. Be nice if they could, but if the Yankees stay hot, they may not have that luxury.
  13. Not surprised; Farrell has said he thinks a lot of the errors are due to Devers being tired. With the off day tomorrow, he should get 2 days off, which might just be enough to recharge for the final 10 games. For those wondering how a 20 year old could be tired, he's played in 134 games over 3 leagues this year. It's the most he's ever played in in a season (128 least year) and he's played most of his major league games in the stress of a pennant race; there's been no easing into things.
  14. Yep. Remember the difference between the "good" .300 hitter and the "mediocre" .250 hitter amounts to a little more than 1 hit a week over the course of the season for a full-time player (with due respect to Bull Durham, but it's right).
  15. It probably should have, and Moreland would be the first one to say so. That doesn't change the fact that Devers had another bad throw. Can we at least admit Devers is not helping the team defensively at 3B? He also had the mental error last night of failing to cover 3rd when they had Jones picked off (MVP, who thinks Devers walks on water, tried to blame Vazquez for a dumb throw).
  16. Magic Numbers: Division - 9 Wild Card - 2
  17. Travis Shaw was that important last season? If anyone will go, it might be Chili Davis. Even allowing last season being career years for some, the drop off has been stunning. There's an old stat called runs produced,; it's runs scored + runs driven in - home runs (no double dipping); it's not perfect but in this case it is illustrative: 2016 2017 Difference Betts 204 165 -39 Bradley Jr. 155 101 -45 Bogaerts 183 132 -51 Pedroia 164 97 -67 Ramirez 162 79 -83 Pedroia has missed a lot of time this year, so that explains some of that large number but I was surprised how few runs Hanley produced last year; this year has been a cliff dive.
  18. Magic Numbers: Division - 10 Wild Card - 4 With tonight's win, the Orioles and Rays have been eliminated, meaning the division has to go to either the Sox or the Evil Empire. So clinching the wild card now officially moves from beating out the Twins to eliminating the Angels.
  19. This isn't going to end well; sooner or later one of the Oriole bats is going to run into one.
  20. just remember Showalter is a failed ex-Yankee farmhand. Makes it easier to hate equally.
  21. Hey so long as it's not a DP ...
  22. At least the Twins made them work for it. More than can be said for the Birds Thursday through Saturday.
  23. MVP, you can wax poetic all day about Devers but right now the kid is a serious liability in the field.
  24. Well, if it's Houston, the two teams will have anywhere from a 7 to a 9 game series.
  25. This. The Twins actually have something to play for. The O's basically bent over for the Yankees this past weekend. Showalter did everything he could to lose all 4. He bumped Bundy from his start yesterday (which would have been on normal rest) to today and started Jimenez instead. He intentionally walked Judge yesterday in the 9th, putting the tying run on base and bringing the winning run to the plate in the person of Sanchez. Unfortunately for his plans, Jimenez and Britton didn't cooperate. Wonder how much his playoff share from the Yanks will be. Of course, he will manage the next 3 like it's game 7 of the World Series.
