    No. They changed that rule when they added the second wild card. They would have a one-game playoff to determine the division champion and the loser goes to the wild card game. This is because the outcomes are so different (moving on to a series vs. a one game scenario). Now, the only time a tie would be broken without a tie breaking game being played are when two teams tie for the 2 wild card slots. Then the use head to head to determine home field for the play in game. Edit- they would use the latter to determine seeding for the 1-2 and 2-3 seeds in the division series as well.

    A's came in playing well; they just swept a 4 game series with the Astros. They are the type of team that's dangerous this time of year, bunch of kids no one knows anything about who have no pressure on them. That being said, Sox need to win this afternoon. Taking 2/3 every series (or splitting a 4 gamer) from here on in will be just fine. What they can't be doing is losing series.

    So with the bases loaded and 1 out, the runner on third is supposed to stay at 3rd on an infield grounder? And even if Pedey holds, that means somehow Benintendi has to get back to second and Betts to first. There were going to be 2 outs on that play no matter what. Cmon, SoxHop you're better than this.

    Probably because Young is 4-4 against Manaea with a double while Davis is 0-3 with 2 Ks. SSS I know, but those are the numbers that exist.

    HRam is making more blunders because he's not 25 anymore. His body knows it but his brain doesn't. Pedey was making some of those same mistakes early in the year, but he hasn't made them lately. How much of that is injury and how much of it is him realizing he's not as fast as he once was is hard to say, but either way, his brain is listening to his body.

    I've never agreed with this sentiment. Yes, there are some players that happens to. But most athletes want to win. Period. Hanley's less than stellar season isn't because he's got a big contract. If anything, he's trying too hard. If Price were coasting, he wouldn't be trying to get back on the mound at this point of the season. Porcello just isn't that good. Outside of the W-L record,. his year is not out of norm for him careerwise. Not his fault the Sox offered him the contract they did. Pedroia, Kimbrel and Sale also have big contracts; they have no desire? The killer B's and many others aren't making big $ yet; that's the contract they are playing to get in a few years. They are not an outwardly emotional team. Betts, Bradley, Bogaerts are quiet guys by nature. They aren't going to show emotion like Papi did. That doesn't mean they lack desire.

    I had the misfortune of living next to Heyman when he was just starting out with the Moline Dispatch over 30 years ago; he was an ass then and apparently still is. I'm long time friends with the guy who was his sports editor back then; he thought Heyman was an ass too.

    Why don't you ask Bill Lee, who was suckered tackled from behind by Graig Nettles and lost all feeling in his arm. He was never really the same, although he did have one more decent season several years later.

    Estrada's 34 now, so it's hard to say how he'll fare from here forward. I don't recall if he's ever been overpowering, but if he can change speeds and locate, he could be somewhat successful for a few more years. Jones had an arm injury late in his Cy Young year, IIRC, and was never the same after that. My point was that 95+ is not a necessity.

    Well said. Porcello has had a few gems this year as well, but it doesn't change his overall lousy season.

    Vargas probably isn't as good as he was in the first half nor as bad as he's been in the second half. Goes for Estrada and a lot of guys. Heck, it went for Pomeranz last year. The real point is that people need to get off this should have pounded him crap based on their perception of stuff. There are many ways to get hitters out, not all of them involve throwing the ball 95+. Maybe the Sox hitters just aren't as good as people here think they are.
