  1. Yes, letting him know his teammates wanted to do it and not him. They did it against his wishes. Maybe this is controversial, but it fits Pedroias blunt personality. I think he will live with it just fine.
  2. If that was the case, his teammates shouldn't be surprised by Pedroia's reaction. Pedroia strikes me as a bluntly honest guy who also wanted to let Machado know that he realizes the spiking was accidental and just part of the game. It kind of fits Pedroia's hard-nosed personality. Being a good teammate isn't always about agreeing with each other as long as you give your all on the field. Pedroia's teammates know he is team first every minute on the field and always gives full effort.
  3. A good, consistent swing is the best approach to hitting. If you start going after bad pitches you have less chance of hitting safely. Look at how many outside pitches Pedroia flails at and misses. He actually hits better with pitches at the top of the strike zone. A good pitch away is easier to hit to the opposite field than one out of the zone. Going after bad pitches is not the mark of trying to get a hit. I think it is quite rare for a hitter to actually control where the ball is hit and is more random than it appears to you.
  4. I'm not disagreeing with this, but it's funny how Mookie went from being the ideal leadoff hitter to one of our power bats. And this season he has gotten off to a good enough start to justify putting him in the top spot. But yeah, Beni is a great leadoff choice. Kid's got a great approach at the plate.
  5. It's a weakness if they don't get hits and it is out of the strike zone. Hitting the other way on a pitch in the strike zone is fine. Reaching for outside pitches out of the zone usually leads to less success. An inside out swing can also be used to go the other way. And yes, these are all done on purpose to attempt to get hits. but they are also part and parcel of a hitters overall approach. Some players use the whole field and some don't; some are dead pull hitters. You stick with the approach that works for you. The hits come or they don't accordingly, not according to how hard you "tried" to get a hit in each particular at bat.
  6. Yes, scoring runs is mostly irrelevant in discussing Sox hitting. I pointed out the lack of overall slugging, which relates to scoring runs. But other than that, there is no major problem with the hitting. I don't think they need a radical change in their overall team hitting approach. The Orioles have 26 HR's but have scored exactly one more run than the Sox, 79 to 78. This fact reflects more positively on the Sox hitting than on the Orioles. Toronto, mired in last place, has scored exactly the same amount of runs as the Sox with 20 HR's . So much for the long ball.
  7. Those reaching out swings could be "their" pitches or it could be a weakness in their approach. It depends on how often it succeeds. Pedroia seems to have a weakness for low outside pitches. They are attempting to hit the ball whenever they swing the bat, but that is not the same as being fooled by a bad pitch. And every swing is not about trying to get a hit. Sometimes it is just about trying to get a piece of the ball on borderline pitches. And sometimes it is simply being fooled by a pitch. There is no try, there is only do.
  8. Maybe so, but so far the Orioles pitching/defense has been better than the Sox. They are allowing less runs/game. And they are not outscoring the Sox by that much, 3.95/game to the Sox 3.71/game.
  9. What area of hitting do they have to improve a lot on? BA and OBP are fine right now. Could use some more HR power. Other than that, what is there other than hitting with RISP? Sox lead Yankees in BA and Orioles in both AVG and OBP. Slugging seems to be the only glaring weakness for the Sox right now. Are they really just a singles hitting team?
  10. Anger doesn't drive in runs. Does anyone remember Manny getting angry? I don't.
  11. I would ask fans here if they think that this is the best hitting and scoring we are going to see from this team. HR power is lacking right now, so how many think that Mookie and Hanley won't hit for power all season? How many think Pedroia won't hit better? Moreland has actually contributed more hitting than expected so far and is a doubles machine. Bogaerts and Benintendi are hitting good so far, albeit with little power. Would one power bat really make that much difference?
  12. The random part is when the hits occur. Great hitters don't "try" to get a hit. They follow their approach and let the hits come as they may. Sometimes they come at the "right" time and sometimes they don't. Great hitters can't control things and gear up to get their hits when they count. They get their hits when they get their pitches to hit.
  13. That will improve as the season progresses.
  14. You are correct. In the long run, getting on base more often leads to more scoring.
  15. Forget toughness, I'm just looking for better hitting with runners in scoring position. Lack of SOB isn't the problem lately. It's too many LOB. But it's much too soon to worry about such things. The hitting talent is there and the scoring will come.
  16. This does not impact how the statistic of BA is calculated.
  17. The official scorer has a limited impact on batting average. Batting average is not overly dependent on official scoring decisions. And one batter's average is not dependent upon a replacement level player's batting average or measured relative to other player's batting averages.
  18. WAR is a subjective statistic. From Baseball-Reference.com:
  19. The Panda is heating up. Watch out! It's the year of the big man.
  20. I'm not looking for any more than decent starts form Pomerantz. I think he can be a solid, reliable starter. But I'm not counting on him for a lot of innings and think he will need to be rested and replaced by the occasional spot starter. The main concern I have is health and durability.
  21. Porcello is snakebit today.
  22. Great challenge by Farrell.
  23. Porcello has regressed to his old hittable self today. Hoping it is just one bad game and that last season was not a fluke.
  24. Thank you. The problem with the Hanley contract imo was twofold: he had a recent history of injury and they really didn't have a defensive position for him to play. The OF experiment was an overly optimistic experiment. He was also injured in his first season. The departure of Ortiz makes Hanley more valuable. But he still is a question mark physically.
