  1. I thought from the start they didn't have the X factor. Now I'm starting to think I am too optimistic in thinking they will have a playoff run. Clay, ERod and Kelly have been disasters. Price has been inconsistent and not the flat out ace I expected. Porcello surprised me with his strong start but seems to have settled back into the mediocrity I expected. And now the offense has cooled off considerably. I am on the brink of despair.
  2. The Sox jumped on the Cuban player bandwagon too late. Castillo was table scraps compared to Puig and Abreau. But even those two have had their recent struggles. Castillo has raw talent but is sorely lacking in discipline and fundamentals. And when they got him he hadn't played for about a year. Too much risk for that kind of contract.
  3. Time to move on from Clay. Just throw some young arms out there and see who sticks. Or trade him for a mediocre starter who needs a new home. Clay is well past his expiration date in a Red Sox uniform.
  4. I think they are missing the X factor to be championship caliber. This is my totally unscientific gut feeling.
  5. I would be ok with bunting in very select situations if there were any players who could execute it properly. Even in the days of skilled bunters there were always those hitters who you would be best served having swing away. I'm mostly a Farrell defender but there are times he is too much by the traditional baseball book and other times too much trying to force the issue.
  6. That's a better baseball risk than bunting which is akin to giving the other team a free out. My wife hates bunting even more than I do. We were both at the game saying no, don't bunt, once we saw him square away.
  7. I see a playoff run in this teams future. But I don't think they are championship caliber.
  8. In that game, every base runner was very important. Success rate or not, the game was one that required a conservative approach. The Sox gave away too many baserunners who potentially could have scored if they took a patient approach. Now granted, they won the game, but I still question those moves.
  9. Not defensible when the batter is not a good bunter. In general, bunting is a wasted at bat unless you have a batter who is a wizard at it. Not too many players like that anymore. Just swing away and take your chances.
  10. I was critical of some moves by the team today (6/19). Mookie got thrown out trying to steal and Hanley got picked off. Really dumb in a game where runs were hard to come by. The bunt by Vazquez was a bad play. I know he's not hitting well but just let him swing away. Bunting sucks, especially because most players can't do it but mostly 'cause it's a wasted out.
  11. Fenway went crazy today when Papi stole second! I was watching from the Monster seats. Along with Mookie's homer it was the highlight of the game. Papi's got wheels!
  12. I brought the best out of Mookie today. I was at the park in the Monster seats and Mookie showed me what for with that big home run. I love it!
  13. If the changes are to give better hitters more plate appearances, I think it is worth doing.
  14. This may be an opportunity for guys to come off the bench and produce. Look at what Young has done. I still think our offense is pretty deep, including the bench potential.
  15. Gibbons certainly is one of the few managers I have seen go against conventional baseball wisdom with his batting order. And Toronto's offense has been coming on strong lately. Maybe there is something to it.
  16. No, you didn't, but it seems to be the general consensus that he is the best choice for leadoff, which I happen to disagree with. This season I'd rather have Bogaerts leading off. I do agree on the righty lefty thing being over-rated. Just give you best hitters the most plate appearances.
  17. Unfortunately I think you are right. I didn't expect Hanley to ever get close to being the player he was in his prime. But now he isn't really as productive as he should be. Move him down until he starts to produce at a higher level.
  18. Gotta go with Wright. Who really expected a marginal player who is a knuckleballer to be the ace of this staff?
  19. I think the whole Betts having to lead off is over-rated.
  20. Bogaerts gets on base better, Betts hits more HRs. That is my reasoning. I don't think it amounts to messing with the lineup. Why not put your best hitter in the leadoff spot? Bogaerts should be getting more plate appearances than Betts. Even JBJ could be moved up.
  21. In addition to questioning Hanley hitting in the 5 hole (on a new thread) how about swapping Bogaerts and Betts in the batting order? Bogaerts gets on base and Betts hits for power. Or is this too psychologically challenging for both of them?
  22. I was hoping someone would appreciate the humor.
  23. Hill on the DL is still better than Buchholz healthy.
  24. I would be happy with the same record as those two teams had. It would probably put them in the playoffs if not first in the division. Those teams back what I am saying, despite any slumps.
  25. I think this offense is so deep that it will avoid any major slumps. And the pitching may improve. Price hasn't really gotten into a groove yet. And I hope Porcello is just slumping a bit. But there are major concerns in Buchholz and Kelly and I'm wondering if Rodriquez is going to be a plus or minus.
