  1. If we can get them to take HRam OR Castillo as a partial contract offset, which gives us an immediate budget boost to go beyond just Stanton, then maybe we give up better talent. HRam, Beni & Bogey, then sign Cozart. HRam, Devers & JBJ, then sign Moose. HRam, Bogey & JBJ, then sign Cozart & Cain. (Note: I am not saying I'd make these deals.)
  2. Then, they keep him for the remainder of his contract. Nobody will give that much talent and control years PLUS pay FA money for anyone.
  3. Yes, but when you project out, let's assume we trade Bogey and JBJ in a 3 or 4- way trade. One can expect they'd be over the $25M luxury cost Stanton will be in just 2-3 years. We could actually save money in 2-3 years and many years afterwards. Many feel like the "cliff" will prevent us from keeping all our young stars. This is one way to avoid losing one anyways, eventually. If we traded Bogey and JBJ, we save about $14M in arb costs just next year. Assuming we have $40M to spend, that makes it $54M: $25M Stanton $14M Cozart $8M Nunez $7M Duda $54M TOTAL
  4. Yes, it's hot down there, and not everyone can afford A/C.
  5. They wouldn't extend them, even if they were not Boras clients. They'll trade anyone coming up for a big raise. I guess new ownership might change the trend, but I'll believe it when I see it. I could see them wanting 1 "today guy" like Beni not JBJ or Bogey and then 2-3 top prospects from the likes of Groome, Mata, Flores, Houck, Scherff or Chavis.
  6. I get that, and I realize there are no guarantees resting him will make him better in October. I'm not sure what we should do different, if anything. I wouldn't mess with his weight or winter work out regime. We could totally mess him up that way.
  7. I have very poor eyesight, and it became a habit. It makes it easier to find my words vs others.
  8. I get how important winning th division is, but waiting until September is probably too late. He almost got an extra day's rest all through this September anyways, and it didn't help. 9/3 normal rest 9/9 +1 9/15 +1 9/20 normal rest 9/26 +1 10/5 +4 I think we need to either give him extra day's rest over the whole year or limit his pitches each start. There's no guarantee it will work, but having a 50-50 Sale for the playoffs hurts too much. I'm not one to think, "It's all about the rings not division titles," but I do value rings much more than multiple division wins.
  9. Paxton Crawford. Not as bad as shooting yourself in the leg (Brentz).
  10. Either that or try to limit his pitches more. The guy has terrible September numbers and declines steadily after May over his career, yet JF let him lead the league in IP.
  11. I totally agree. If you look at the biggest contracts each year going back over 15 years, most do not work out well, and many are complete disasters. That being said, it's hard not to continually be lured into the temptation that more signings can give us that edge we so desperately seem to need. I could easily see JD becoming the next HRam, but I doubt he'll be the next Pablo. I keep thinking the odds are in our favor by signing guys like JD, but it hardly ever seems to work out that way. Despite the risk, I'd roll the dice on JD or Moose and maybe even go for a big SP'er, too. It's not my money, so I guess it's all up to Henry and then DD.
  12. Or, we trade Bogey & JBJ and then they flip them. Not long from now, JBJ plus Bogey will make more than $25M, anyways.
  13. Their fans are used to it.
  14. Yes, but Sale did not cost much money, unless you count the Moncada bonus.
  15. We most certainly have limits, even if it is not a finite line. My personal opinion is that we reset the luxury tax for more than the reason to save money this year. I feel Henry & DD did it with the idea that the budget limit could be significantly higher for the next two years...while the "window" is still open. I'm not sure how high we may go, but I would not be surprised if we go real close to the 2nd tier penalty limit this winter. We may even go over it, but I admit this is only conjecture on my part mixed with maybe some wishful thinking.
  16. Thanks. I try to keep it mostly about Sox baseball, but I hope a post like this doesn't get me banned.
  17. Who me? My minimum plan is signing JD, Duda and Nunez. I realize that may not be enough, and I'm open to kicking the tires on Stanton, but I doubt Henry wants to us to become Dodgers East.
  18. I've always been very high on Marco. Sadly, I would not go into 2018 with any expectations. We need a better plan, even if just for one year as we hope Marco or someone else steps up..
  19. Doesn't that imply you think there was a chance the Marlins might have given him away for nothing except paying the contract?
  20. Nice "baseball comment".
  21. MLBTR's TOP Free Agent Ranking 1. Yu Darvish: Interesting, but I doubt we go hard for a number one starter 3 years in a row. 2. JD Martinez: Seems like the best fit for Boston, but these DH types almost always end up biting us in the ass. He would solve the 4th OF'er slot at the same time as the clean-up hitter vacancy. MLBTR says he might get 6 years--Yikes! 3. Jake Arrieta: Another interesting thought. See #1. 4. Eric Hosmer: I'll die a thousand deaths, if we sign this guy to 3+ years. 5. Masahiro Tanaka: See #1. 6. Justin Upton: I suppose we could sign him, if JD goes elsewhere, but I'd rather have JD or Moose. 7. Mike Moustakas: Fills the clean-up slot while improving our 3B defense. Force a possible premature Devers to 1B move. He's my second choice behind JD. 8. Lorenzo Cain: I guess, if we traded Beni & JBJ for Stanton... 9. Wade Davis: MLBTR says $62M/4: no thanks. 10. Greg Holland: Hmmm... Others: Cueto, if he opts out, Morrison, Lance Lynn and Carlos Santana.
  22. Pot meet kettle.
  23. He is not the MN GM.
  24. Nunez can easily get 550 PAs without being FT at any position for us. That's with no major injuries to Pedey or others. Any OF'er who sits, is rested or injured can be replaced by Nunez in LF and sliding players around, if needed. Nunez can cover 3B, SS and 2B.. He could also play any of the above position as that player DHs. He can DH himself. That being said, there is a limit on what we should pay and how many years to give him. I'm thinking maybe $18-19M/2 yrs of $25-26M for 3 years- tops. If that doesn't get him here, we move on. Maybe he liked it here. He hit well in Fenway. He might go one year, in hopes of having a huge year and hitting paydirt next winter.
  25. He may be looking longer term and want 2-4 from Groome, Chavis, Mata Flores, Brannen or Scherff. Of course, he could get JBJ and Bogey and flip them now or later.
