  1. Rumor has it the Padres are looking hard at Hosmer. More reason to pass on that choice.
  2. It's also my opinion that some owners really view their spending and success with pride. I doubt Steinbrenner relished the idea that so many baseball people viewed the Yankees winning championships as being bought and not earned by great management skills and shrewd acquisitions. I have a hunch that Henry does not want to be viewed as the Dodgers East. It's just a hunch, and I have no evidence to support this opinion. The penalty for going over the second level is not really crippling, as long as it's just done once, but I doubt we do it. (If we were to do it, it makes sense to do it right after a reset.)
  3. While true, his track record has been to avoid going too far over the tax limit, but I guess one could say nothing can be read into that, in terms of is it just coincidence or some sort of planned thing? My guess is, and it's just a guess, Henry will not want pay taxes every year. He will want to reset the tax from time to time to keep the rate lower. He will seriously try to avoid the second penalty phase of the luxury tax. I've been actually thinking DD will do something he's never allowed to be done before: go over the luxury tax by $10-19M next season. I'm not expecting anything more radical anytime soon.
  4. I'm pretty sure most GMs view Vaz as an overall plus defender. He can and should still get better.
  5. Mariners Acquire Dee Gordon By Jeff Todd | December 7, 2017 at 3:57pm CDT The Mariners have officially struck a deal with the Marlins to acquire second baseman Dee Gordon. Seattle will also pick up $1MM in international spending capacity. Righty Nick Neidert is going back to Miami along with fellow prospects Christopher Torres and Robert Dugger. It’s a rather stunning move that was not at all anticipated for a Seattle organization that has highly-paid star Robinson Cano at Gordon’s accustomed position of second base. But the M’s have a plan, it seems: Gordon will move to center field, according to Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio (Twitter link) and as Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto confirms (via Divish, on Twitter). The Marlins have been working hard to pare salary this winter, and that meant finding a taker for the 29-year-old Gordon’s contract. He’s promised another $38MM through the 2020 season, including a buyout on a $14MM option for 2021, all of which will be assumed by the Mariners. Other players are sure to follow Gordon out of Miami.
  6. Will she be part of Trump's next ban?
  7. Yeah, she's always causing trouble!
  8. Thanks for the correction. If we are to go after Machado, maybe it makes more sense to go after a 1 year 1Bman and then plan on moving Devers to 1B next year. 1. Bogey SS 2. Betts RF 3. Machado 3B 4. JD Martinez DH 5. Devers 1B 6. Beni LF 7. Pedey 2B 8. JBJ CF 9. Vaz C
  9. I'm not sure anyone is "hung up on it," but there's not much else to discuss, so it came up again amid all the DD debate.
  10. Do you see us having any chance at singing JD & Santana? MLBTR has us signing both, plus Bryan Shaw.
  11. Cubs sign Tyler Chatwood for $38M/3.
  12. It is needed at times, but there was no need to mislead when he said there would be no surgeries. Maybe he misspoke. Maybe he didn't know, which I find hard to believe and would think that's worse than lying when not needed.
  13. Some news... The Cardinals’ signing of right-hander Miles Mikolas to a two-year, $15.5MM. Royals sign two ex-Brave prospects: The Royals have also agreed to a deal with former Braves prospect Juan Carlos Negret. The Royals have also agreed to sign right-hander Yefri Del Rosario for a $650K signing bonus,
  14. I do think we will see a few significant upticks next season from players currently on the roster. I still think we need a big bat at clean-up and JD looks like the best choice, even with all the risk associated with such a signing. No QO. Hits LHPs & RHPs about equally well. Playing DH should help him see more PAs than ever.
  15. One could argue the IFA market has been our best area of team building over the last 4-6 years. We've bombed on most big FA signings. Our drafts have not been all that great since 2011 with 2014 looking better than it did a while back.
  16. Find another thread, please.
  17. I'm hoping we can score with some international free agents, Without them and the players we got by trading some of them, it's hard to imagine where we'd be right now without them. Many were not from the D. R. Many were. Devers (DR) Bogey (Aruba) Moncada (Cuba) centerpiece of Sale Trade Espinoza (Venezuela) got us Pomeranz Margot (DR) centerpiece for Kimbrel trade Basabe brothers (Venezuela) traded away Hector Velazquez (Mexico) Lin (Taiwan) Castillo (Cuba) Current IFA prospects: Mata (Venezuela) D Diaz (Venezuela) D Hernandez (Venezuela)
  18. No reading comprehension skills exhibited at all. Adios.
  19. Yes, the lack of a draft is a huge aspect. It is reasonable to have misgivings about any signing or draftee.
  20. Many prospects who beat up on A/AA and even AAA pitchers flame out in MLB. My guess is that there is a similar, if not a lesser flame out rate for foreign players who played several years in other countries. You rarely get a chance to sign some other team's minor league players putting up big numbers. It's much easier to gauge value of players in the minors vs college. I'm thinking it's easier to scout foreign players than HS or college players, because the competition is a little more known and consistent. The opponents HS and college players face are wildly sporadic and un-measurable.
  21. 1) You claimed the Tigers did not have a "big market payroll." They did and they still do (thanks to DD). 2) Why are you bringing up the fact that it's not my money? You brought up the money issue. 3) Our budget is not limitless, otherwise we would not have reset the tax this year, and we'd have traded for Verlander NOT the Astros. 4) CAPS IS YELLING not bold. My eyesight is poor, and the bold helps me catch spelling mistakes and typos. 5) Thanks for schooling me on how to reply to a post by modeling a premium post.
  22. I'm hopeful DD and Cora develop a plan to not overuse our SP'ers. My projection is that Porcello will perform at a level close to the midway point between 2016 & 2017.
  23. It's a very simple term for a very simple idea for a simple game.
  24. DD gets a bad name for depleting the minors. While it may have hurt in Detroit where they dont win, and where they dont have big market payroll, in Boston....we have the monetary assets to make up for dealing prospects. DD spent like a maniac while in Detroit. Their budget has actually been higher than the Sox in 3 of the last 4 seasons. DD inherited a team that was spending about $50M a year and took it to ... $139M in '09 (Sox $140M under Theo) $136M in '10 (Sox $171M) $113M in '11 (Sox $174M) $141M in '12 (Sox $175M under Ben) $155M in '13 (Sox $176M) $173M in '14 (Sox $168M) $173M in '15 (Sox $186M) (DET spent $212M in 2016 and $200M in 2017) (BOS spent $204M in 2016 and $197M in 2017 under DD) The Tigers are no poor team, and their high payroll budget the last 2 years are a result of DD's wild spending, some of which are listed below... Miggy $248M/8 Fielder $214M/9 (traded for KinslerKinsler $75M/5 ) Verlander $180M/7 (since traded away) J Upton $132M/6 A Sanchez $80M/6 VMart $68M/4
