  1. I doubt we win without VTek.
  2. I doubt that's the reason or a major reason. Who knows. He's always been streaky.
  3. Big shoe drops (lol)... Chris Iannetta signs with the Rockies for $8.5M
  4. It's well known, VTek was the man when it came to how to approach opposing batters.
  5. Not many, from any team, can top Fisk.
  6. Did he not like what happened during negotiations? Weird. Why not say "no" to STL before all the wooing?
  7. LAD has no DH. SEA already had famous Japanese stars. It ws said that Ohtani wanted to "blaze a new trail" somewhere (my words). LAA makes sense in that light.
  8. JBJ was an awesome defender very early. My point was that the "not close" in AA statement was incorrect.
  9. It's rare that a player who does poorly in the minors does well in the majors- not so rare for a player that does well in the minors but poorly in MLB.
  10. Merry Christmas from John Henry... Sign: JD Martinez, Santana & Shaw Trade: JBJ, ERod, Hembree & Chavis for Chris Archer 1. Bogey SS 2. Betts RF 3. Beni CF 4. Martinez LF 5. Santana 1B 6. Devers 3B 7. HRam DH 8. Pedey 2B 9. Vaz C Bench- Leon, Swihart, Hernandez, Brentz SP: Sale, Archer, Price, Pom, Porcello, Wright RP: Kimbrel, Shaw, Smith, Kelly, Barnes, Scott, Maddox ML-ready on the farm C- Romanski 1B- Chavis, Travis & Ockimey by August? 2B- Quiroz 3B- Holt (Chavis) SS- Lin, Marrero (out of options) OF- Castillo, Tavarez, Barfield & Mars SP- Johnson, Velazquez, Beeks, Elias, Haley, Shepherd RP- Thornburg, Workman, Taylor, Buttrey & Martin
  11. I'm still fine with signing Moustakas (or Machado next winter) and moving Devers to 1B.
  12. A rare time that money is not everything.
  13. JBJ AA (at age 22) .809 in 271 PAs AAA (at age 23) .849 in 374 PAs Beni AA (at age 21) .872 in 263 PAs With JBJ's superior defense, even at age 21, I don't see a big difference in overall skill level and "ML readiness" between the two at age 21-22.
  14. My position is that you can't just tell by looking at the numbers in hindsight. Personally, I don't think JBJ or Beni were rushed. I don't think Devers was "ready" defensively, but was brought up out of necessity. I guess one could call that "rushed". I would not.
  15. ...and speaking of eras. VTek played before all the computer analysis took over. He was a walking encyclopedia. His knowledge of opposing hitters was legendary.
  16. Maybe warmer weather (vs SEA & CHI) and an ability to DH (vs all NL clubs).
  17. Does hindsight then mean JBJ was rushed, because he sucked when he was called up?
  18. 20th out of 105 and my Bogey comp was Bogey being 29th out of 30 on defense. I've never said Bogey was an overall below average SS. IMO, he is a below average defender. Yes, I view 7th out of 30 as being a "top catcher", especially since pitch framing and handling of the staff are not covered by WAR or OPS.
  19. I don't think Devers was in DD's 2017 plans. Beni was.
  20. Why trade a mess of prospects for a guy making about $17M x 2, when you can just sign Santana at $17M x 3?
  21. He signed for about $1M less than the Mariners could have offered, so it looks like money was not the top priority. We should have offered a rocket transport to Japan and back to entice him to come to Boston.
  22. Down goes Ohtani! Down goes Ohtani!
  23. He kept the two that he had positions opening up for. I'm glad he did.
  24. Best of luck H. O.
  25. I disagree with your disagreement. VTek's career spanned from 1997-2011. During that time, he placed.... 18th out of 105 catchers with 1,000+ PAs in OPS. 21st in OBP at .341 21st in SLG at .435 In his prime, 1999-2007, he placed accordingly (69 players with 1,000 + PAs): 10th in OPS (.801) over a 10 year period 5th in WAR (22.0) (and also 5th out of 16 with 3,000+ PAs, so this is not due to longevity) Placing 10th out of 66 shows he was very good during the era of hitting. Changing the sample size: OPS 8th out of 43 with 1500+ PAs 7th out of 29 with 2000+ 6th out of 21 with 2500+ During this period, he was a top catcher in the league.
