  1. Half of our current 40 man roster was added in the 2015 winter or later, including call-ups that were in the system but not on the 40 man roster. Carson Smith is #20 added DEC 2015. Steven Wright is second in 40 man roster seniority behind Pedey.
  2. Reed: Nogosek (20th), Bautista (20th) & Callahan (18th) Nunez: Shuan Anderson (11th) & Grgory Santos (NR)
  3. Willie McGee was pretty bad. I'd vote for Andy Etchebarren.
  4. 1973 Darold Knowles
  5. No Sox team has won 100 or more games since 1946. Who was the manager in the only 99 win regular season in 80+ years? Zimmer 99 in 1978 (2nd place) Others since 1950.... Tito 98 in 2004 (2nd place) WS Farrell 97 in 2013 (1st) WS Zimmer 97 in 1977 (2nd) Tito 96 in 2007 (1st) WS Tito 95 in 2009 (2nd) Tito 95 in 2008 (2nd) Tito 95 in 2005 (2nd) Johnson 95 in 1975 (1st) Lost WS J Williams 94 in 1999 (2nd) Farrell 93 in 2017 (1st) Farrell 93 in 2016 (1st) Little 93 in 2002 (2nd) D Williams 92 in 1967 (1st) Lost WS J Willimas 92 in 1998 (2nd) Zimmer 91 in 1979 (3rd) Tito 90 in 2011 (3rd) Of course, this isn't the full story. For one thing, Dick Williams led his team to a division win in a 10 team division, while other often finished 2nd in a 5 team division. One of Tito's WS wins (2004) was as a wild card team. Some managers never had that chance. Stength of division was also a big factor. (Then again, the playoff runs to the WS were shorter.)
  6. I totally agree. Williams took a terrible team from the year before to great heights. One game from a ring, when nobody expected them to even have a winning record.
  7. Some of these prospects have dropped a lot since the trades, but here is a list of all the prospects DD traded- listed in order of their highest soxprospects.com ranking: 1 Moncada 3 Margot 3 Espinoza 5 Kopech 6 Guerra 7 Basabe 9 Dubon 12 Travis Shaw (not a prospect when traded) 12 W Rijo 13 L Allen 13 P Light 18 Basabe 20 C Asuaje 21 V Diaz 24 J Pennington 40 J Almonte
  8. I read somewhere that Ben was drooling over Heyward and Stanton.
  9. While Price is DD's only big ticket item, he has made other moves that add up to a lot of money being paid out. Nobody should complain about Sale's low cost, and Kimbrel's "market rate" at the time of the trade looks like a bargain now, but some other deals have not really worked out well. Moreland gave us more than what we should have expected, but that doesn't mean it was great deal or the only one out there. FA Signings or pick-ups off waivers: $217M/7 Price $13M/2 Young $5.5M Moreland $1.75M Fister $975K Boyer via trade: $38M/3 C Sale $38M/3 Kimbrel $4.5M Pom (2nd of 3 arbs) $2.63M A Reed $2.05M Thornburg (arb) $2M R Davis $1.4M Nunez Questionable contracts $2M Abad One could be a stickler and claim we could have signed EE, if we had not signed or acquired Moreland, Reed, Davis, Nunez, Thornburg, Fister, Abad, Holt, Boyer, Rutledge. Could we have got by without Nunez, Fister and others? He might have been able to trade Young after 2016, but that's hindsight BS. We needed a 4th OF'er. I'm not complaining about DD's spending. He's done better than Ben on contracts.
  10. I think Zim did, too, but I remember the group of Lee, Carbo and I think Willoughby during the Johnson era. I forget their nickname... something like the "White Buffalos". However, Lee was traded while Zim was the manager.
  11. Fair point. I'm almost always front and center on the acquire a pitcher bandwagon, and I do agree we could use a 2/3 or 3/4 starter type, but to me we have two higher needs: 1) Clean-up hitter (preferably 1B or 3B if we move Devers to 1B) 2) 4th OF'er (who could cover DH, if HRam fails) I'm not sure there's enough money to get all three, and I sure as hell would prefer we don't trade anymore prospects (unless it's for Stanton).
  12. I never said he was worried about being insulted, and I even wrote in bold.
  13. I forgot about the 5 games he managed that year. I was thinking of the 60's.
  14. The only way would have been to not have almost all of these players: 5.5 Moreland Fister Boyer Not add (pro-rated deals): Nunez Reed Davis Maybe trade or DFA: $6.5M Young $2M Abad $2M Holt
  15. If you were here for Pesky, then what about Johnson?
  16. There's probably 20+ teams that just flat out would not pay anyone that salary. His luxury number of $25M is less than the actual, so that adds value to the top spending teams straddling the limit year after year. I'd say maybe 4-6 teams might get serious.
  17. They could trade for an arb player and flip them immediately or after 1-2 years, depending on how much they want to compete now. A three team trade could also work.
  18. It might bump our power up a little, but if the guy hits .211, it's not an upgrade over Beni.
  19. 1) It is a 3-4 year window not 2. 2) Firing JF was essential, and that meant losing the coaches. It's not rocket science. 3) We had a high priority to re-set the luxury tax, so the winter spending budget was not "huge". Other than getting all 3 points wrong, I kind of liked Larry's assessment.
  20. If we signed EE, we'd probably have ended up over the luxury limit, and/or we'd not have gotten Fister, Moreland, Nunez, Reed and Davis. No re-set.
  21. I almost put Thompson #15. As you can see, I count speculative value more than soxprospects.com and others.
  22. My top Sox prospect list: 1. Chavis 2. Mata 3. Groome 4. Flores 5. Ockimey 6. Houck 7. Scherff 8. Brannen 9. Beeks 10. Maddox 11. Travis 12. Chatham 13. Shawaryn 14. D Diaz 15. Raudes Sleeper: Jake Cosart (45th on soxprospects.com)
  23. Yea, I didn't take it that way. I was just saying I'd say no.
  24. I hope the Sox don't do that deal. 30 HRs and 59 RBI. .211 BA (career .222) .315 OBP (career .329)
  25. The cost of closers sky-rocketed right after we traded for Kimbrel. I've always loved Kimbrel, and I thought he'd remain a top 3 closer all 3 years, but I thought the overpay was too much. fangraph's WAR: 2016: 1.2 ($9.6M fangraphs value) 2017: 3.3 ($26.1M) 2018: tba
