  1. I'm pretty sure management already has a good idea of what Swihart brings on the defensive side of the catching position. To me, it'a all about his bat. If he hits, he'll get more playing time. If he hits very well, he may tip the balance on his poor defense to the point of being an overall net plus and could catch more and more. Vazquez hitting so poorly lowers the bar for that to happen to some extent. I do wonder, if any pitchers have or will say, "Please- not with me."
  2. No talk of "antics" at all, right- from anybody?
  3. Could be. I wonder who the unlucky starter will be who draws the Swi as a catcher card.
  4. Maybe to prove their case in a grievance that they gave him every chance possible to succeed, and he failed. On the flip side, had they demoted him in the line-up, it might have looked better for them. His 17 game slump came on quickly. It was probably just a matter of days- maybe after 13-14 games of sucking- that they began to wonder if this was the best (or perhaps only) chance they'd get to DFA him and not have to worry too much about losing a grievance. They knew the Pedey decision was due in days and had to decide. Had DD told Cora to demote or bench HRam, it might not have helped in a grievance case. I like the line about them not thinking HRam would handle a benching very well as a reason. They had a short window to pounce and they took it. Maybe it came up on them faster than they expected. Maybe they thought they'd wait till Pedey came up to start limiting HRam's time with a better excuse, but then felt, let's just cut the cord now.
  5. Yes, indeed, but that was another year.
  6. We already have 3 defensively challenged utility players in Holt, Nunez & Swihart.
  7. I think the frustratioin level on Vaz has risen more than Swihart's defensive stock. Vaz looks lost on O and D.
  8. Three times Harden was fouled while shooting a 3. One was not called and the other two were ruled "not in the act of shooting". He got those calls all year, then suddenly no. The league/refs decide it's Golden State vs Cleveland, and that's it. Eric Gordon's drive to the hoop met with a body slam no call was the final straw. I've been away from the NBA for a while, but started watching again this year as my Bucks looked promising (on paper). I used to pay for the NBA ticket. I'm done with the NBA, forever!
  9. ..or like Jed Lowrie...
  10. That's why I was surprised he was handed the FT jobon opening day. He hadn't eraned doodilly-squat.
  11. We can agree on this. To me, the JD & Moreland signings were the sign they were looking to eventually platoon or limit HRam's PAs. His slump gave us an easy out. Had he continued hitting well, we'd have been screwed for 2019, but HRam hitting really well would have helped our odds to win this year. JD and Moreland being over 1.000 certainly made the choice easier.
  12. That's a big if. He was bound to slump at some point. It just happened to be in May. I agree. If he was still performing anywhere near like April, he'd still be here, but only until he slumped. I was actually surprised they handed him the FT job on opening day. He hadn't "earned it", and Moreland was a better option vs RHPs due to his better defense and comparaable splits. When Hram started getting so many key hits, it was hard to not play him FT. I think this scared management into thinking that they might have to act at the first opportunity. had HRam built up an .800 OPD through 2-3 months, an 18 game slump would not have sunk his season numbers low enough to look legit. We got lucky he slumped ealy and that his slumping didn't greatly affect our record.
  13. Team Record in Starts by... 10-1 ERod (who was the poster who said we should trade him, because he can't go past 5 IP?) 8-4 Porcello (9 of 12 starts with 3 or less ERs allowed) 7-4 Price (7 of 11 starts with 0-2 ERs allowed) 7-5 Sale (only 7 ERs allowed in 4 losses) 2-0 Velazquez (3 Ersin 11 IP in his two starts) 1-0 Johnson (1 ER in 6 IP) 4-3 Pomeranz (6 of 7 starts with 4 or less ERs allowed) We still have a winning record no matter who is starting.
  14. Andrew Miller for ERod. Lackey for Kelly and Craig Lester for Cespedes (Cespedes for Porcello) Peavy for Hembree and Escobar Doubront for Marco Hernandez
  15. They were worried about a grievance. They went out of their way to show they were giving him a chance- all the while waiting for a slump like the one he just had. Of course, it took him having a slump, and that had to be part of the equation, but it's almost a sure bet any fair to mediocre player will have a slump at some point in the season. It was going to happen as soon as he slumped. Yes, if he never slumped, things might have gone differently, but that was likely not going to happen. It was in the cards all along, IMO.
  16. Expecting pitchers to do the exact same thing they did their last time pitching has always baffled me. I'm going to be at 3 of the 4 games here in Houston, so maybe my passion is running higher than it should, but I think we're going to light these guys up- bigtime.
  17. He had an .854 OPS with 4 times this year's PAs back in 2016. It's possible he'll have a long hot streak like he did back then. I know you hope he flops, and maybe he will, but I'll keep hoping for the best and enjoying his superior play behind the plate- where it matters.
  18. Nobody gives up on a catcher who shows promising offense. They moved on for a reason. The fact that he barely played at all while our catchers were hitting .450 combined tells the whole story. Sox management has no confidence in his defensive abilities. They have kept him in the system in hopes his offense improves and he can become a decent utility player. He could hit .350 this year, and they'll still not move him to catcher going forward. He's been given a chance to improve his 1B defense and maybe LF or 3B at some point. His bat is going to keep him around or send him packing.
  19. ...and on the rise.
  20. I seriously doubt Sox management would have given up on Swihart's catcher development, if they really fely he showed any signs of improvement to the point of projecting to decency on defense behind the plate. I'm not saying team managements never make mistakes, and maybe this was one of them, but Swihart has been given chances. He's clung to a roster spot this year out of management giving him yet another chance to re-invent himself. Had he showed growth, he'd have been kept at catcher. It's not like Leon and Vaz are that great that anyone would say a promising catcher was blocked.
  21. Every player slumps. Only a few established players get DFA'd over a 17-18 game slump. HRam was bound to have a slump at some point this year. DD pounced at the first one for obvious reasons.
  22. Yes, it would have been harder to DFA him or limit his PAs had he not went cold, but he was only cold for 18 games...18 games he still hit 3 HRs in. Not many players who led their team in RBIs for a while get DFA'd over 18 games. It was always about the $22M and looking for any excuse to get out of it.
  23. LOL. I'm waiting for his 3 HRs in 2 games, then we'll hear it.
  24. What about taking 2 of 3 vs your Yanks in April? How were the Angels doing before we swept them? The Braves were like the 2nd best team in the NL when we took 2 of 3 from them. Prediction: we're going to crush the vaunted Astros staff into the stone age.
