  1. We could probably go even beyond Mazza & Valdez and not lose anyone very promising. We may also trade guys like Vaz, Barnes, Beni, Chavis and some of the names we've mentioned, assuming some GM wants them and will give anything up (non 40 man roster players). For argument's sake, let's say we add 10 players without trading anyone on our 40 man roster. We all kind of agree that the first 6-8 players are easily parted with, but are the next 2-4 all that promising? 1. Brice 2. Springs 3. Wilson 4. Walden 5. Aybar 6. Arauz 7. Grullon 8. Payamps 9. Chatham (trade?) 10. Bazardo (trade?) Then, there's Pedey. I'm not all that high on Brewer, and could see us trading Vaz, Barnes or Beni. Would anyone cry, if we trade Brasier and maybe a couple others for a non 40 man roster prospect? Many teams are looking at deciding between players like Brewer, Brasier and Bazardo NOT Mazza, Valdez or Chatham.
  2. Anything can happen, and many felt we had long odds after 2012 and before we signed anyone. Some felt that way even after the many signings. I guess we should wait to see who Bloom signs and trades for before comparing to the 2013 team. (I just don't see a big spending winter like we had 2012-2013.)
  3. If we sign someone to play 2B, I don't think we need so many down roster infielders. While it's true some may be better than some of the down roster pitchers or OF'ers, we need pitching depth. My guess is, we acquire several pitchers, somehow, and DFA a few pitchers to make room for them. We may, however, choose to DFA one IF'er to make room for a pitcher and/or the 2Bman we may or may not acquire. Again, I really don't care much who the last 1-2 players we DFA are between the likes of Chatham, Arauz, Mazza or Valdez. We could add 10-12 players and DFA them all.
  4. I wouldn't be surprised if we sign a defensive CF'er and a CF/2B player.
  5. Rosario is supposed to be an excellent defensive CF'er, my guess is better than Duran and Wilson. He gets on base but has a low SLG %. I'm hoping he gets a look at AA, this year. I can see why he belongs in the third tier.
  6. I was talking Sox parade with Betts in 2020- not ever happening. The trade was a win for the Dodgers, too. I've said that all along. It will be a win for us, too- ring or not.
  7. They both seem very similar to many players DFA'd by other clubs every year. I'm not saying either or both should be valued more than mazza or valdez. Our bottom 10-12 players are all pretty close and all are "bubble players."
  8. I seriously doubt we have anywhere near the spending budget we had that winter, this year. 2012 dollars are not the same as 2016-2019 Vic $13M x 3 Dempster $13M x 2 Ortiz $13M x 2 Drew $9.5M x 1 Gomes $5M x 2 Napoli $5M x 1 (+ bonuses) Uehara $4M x 1 D Ross $3.1M x 2 With the pandemic lowering prices on some free agents, my guess is, there may be some great value signings at the end of the signing period. Maybe Bloom swoops in a signs 7-10 players. Lord know, we have room for 10 or more on our current roster. At worst, we end up trading some at the deadline, if we fall out of contention. Many late deals will likely be just one year deals, but I could see henry saying it's fine going over the tax line when most are one year deals. It would start the clock on year 2 and 3, so maybe he wants to stay under one more year, but if we do go over, the limit might be $19.9M over, which would give Bloom plenty of space to "work his magic" on mid range to low level signings.
  9. I'd sneak Rosario into that last group- maybe Potts, too.
  10. I don't view Casas like I did Devers, and I'm not sure anyone does.
  11. 17 starts would be great!
  12. Why not? He has options left and his rule 5 status is gone, now.
  13. Bazardo is 6th, so we won't be DFA'ing him for a rule 5 pick (or two). He would only be DFA'd, if we add 6 players to the current roster. Is there someone you dislike more?
  14. I think we will add a 2Bman- maybe CF/2B, so I think we won't need both Chatham & Arauz. If we don't add an IF'er, I'd keep both, for awhile anyway.
  15. True, but I still view the $16M as money we'd not have to spend, had we not traded him- assuming we have a set spending limit. I'd rather have Morton at $15M than Price for 2021.
  16. I thought about Mazza, then forgot to list him. I agree on Valdez, but I like him more than anyone on my list. (Bloom may not.)
  17. Well, we know he wouldn't sign a bunch of high-priced FAs. If he tried to "win now" he'd have to trade somebody without opening new holes on the ML roster, so maybe not Casas or Downs, but some prospects would likely be gone. Yes, speculation and up for debate.
  18. I mostly give him a pass, because he did what Henry signed him to do, but getting almost all pitching was also commendable. A side note: he did trade a lot of pitchers, too: Kopech (Sale), Espinoza (Pompom), Allen (Kimbrell), Beeks (Eovaldi), Buttrey (Kinsler), Bautista, Nogosek & Callahan (Reed), Anderson & Santos (Nunes). The only mostly non pitchers given up deals were the Sale (Moncada & Basaabe) , Kimbrel (Margot, Guerra & Asuaje) and Thornburg (Dubon & T Shaw).
  19. I think Rosario & Potts could be the real sleepers. Jimenez could jump once we get a larger sample size of viewings. I agree on all your "high" and "low" comments. (I like these rankings more than soxprospects.com.)
  20. I think Brice will be nontendered. It's not just rule 5 draftees, but any FA signing will necessitate a DFA or trade. Brice may end up at AAA, if he cares to stay here. I doubt anyone claims him. Most other teams have more pressing 40 man roster issues than us. My order or let go's: (Recently- claimed Joel Payamps has no remaining options. I'm not sure we keep him on the 40 man all winter.) 1. Brice 2. Springs 3. Aybar or Wilson 4. Walden 5. Chatham or Arauz 6. Bazardo 7. Grullon
  21. According to many here, we were never going to sign Betts. (I still think we could have, but the risk of keeping him, in hopes of signing him were too great. The whole "He's going to become a FA thingy turned out to be false, so it's hard to know anything about this.)
  22. Like we'd have had a parade keeping Betts?
  23. The difference between keeping him and trading him is $16M per. Had we kept him, we'd have $16M less to spend, in theory.
  24. Good stuff, MVP. Thanks.
  25. DD would have already traded Casas and Downs plus more. With a small spending budget, he'd be lost.
