    Yes, but I was highlighting the emphasis on longer term help vs maybe just 2021. If one thinks Aybar and Stock have equal chances at "helping the MLB roster," I'd keep Aybar.

    Agreed, but if it's even, keep the guy with more options. IMO, on this team, the 26th man will be a tougher roster decision than the 40th.

    On a rebuilding team, you may keep the player with the most long term promise, like Aybar or Arauz.

    Thanks. When's the rule 5 protection date? We're down to 36 on the roster- not counting JBJ. Here's my stab at identifying who is next to go: 1.     What a performance by Pedro that deciding game. They had put up crooked numbers in 7 of the 8 innings they batted the previous game- winning 23-7, but they went down 5-2 and 8-7 against the Guardians. Saberhagen 1 IP 5 runs S Lowe 2 IP 3 runs Pedro comes in for 6 IP 0 Hits 0 runs 8 Ks We went on to lose to the Yanks (4 games to 1) with Pedro winning our only game (#3 over Roger Clemens). In that game, he went 7 IP 2H 0 Runns (12 Ks). We were down 2-1 in that series, at the time, despite outscoring the Yanks 18-8.

    Yes, the Matsui hit was maybe the hardest hit of the night. Pedro will always be "the man" in my book.

    Remember when Pedro came in in relief in that Guardians playoff game and went like 7 innings all tired out? Had he let up a ton of runs, would that have been worse than the Little decision? Hindsight sure is 20-20. (I know many felt the Little choice was right, before the losing hit, but not me. I was pissed he was pulled.)

    I'd still take a 50% Pedro over a 100% Embree everyday of the week and twice on Sundays. His arm was not dangling. The hit that beat him was a cheezy flair hit. Had he popped out to 2B, we'd have never heard a peep. Now, it's the worst managerial decision in Sox history. If that's "old school," count me in.

    Sorry. I find it hard to criticize Grady for pulling Pedro and Cash for pulling Snell, at the same time. I realize the pitch counts were different. The pen choices were different, but IMO, you live or die with your best guy on the mound, unless his arm is dangling from the socket. The Pedro choice certainly made more sense than the Snell one, but both were the best each team had and were doing well.

    It will really be more like "the middle" of our 40 man roster, when all is said and done. We've already gotten rid of a handful to make room for the players on IL. We will get rid of 6-7 more for Rule 5 players. That will put us into to #28-30 slots from the 40 man roster of just last week. Add 4 to 6 or 7 free agents and a couple or more players signed off waivers, and we could easily be DFA'ing #19 to #21 and or Pedey. We may also trade guys like Barnes, Taylor, Brasier, Chavis or Vaz. When is the last time we saw a 40 man roster turnover of 20 or more players from October to March? Couple this with the fact that we have 18 players on our current 40 man roster that were acquire last winter or later, and we can see the massive roster shuffle going on.

    You live or die with Snell. Period. (That's why I never had an issue with leaving Pedro in that game.)

    Agreed. I think the union needs to change its approach. Push for raising the minimum salary by a lot. Push for starting the arb year one year earlier, even if you add one more on the end. Push for minimum team player budget thresholds with stiffer penalties than paying the players enough to reach the line. Raise that line yearly by more than the max line is raised. Push for a 42 or 44 man roster.

    Agreed, but I'm thinking other teams have very deep 40 man rosters, and some fine talent will be DFA'd- perhaps better than all these guys we listed. Basically, what I'm saying is that I think other team's #41 is likely better than our #28-30. Some may be better than our #22-25.

    I think the 4 guys you mentioned will "stick around," but it would be no big loss, if they were replaced. My guess is, better players will be DFA'd by other teams as their rosters are trimmed. Several teams actually have real roster crunches. Good players will be DFA'd or traded.

    The Rule 5 roster clearing will begin, soon. We will likely protect 6-7 players. We may add some players cut by other teams as they trim their rosters for Rule 5. We may add a player in the rule 5 draft, especially since we will have a high pick. Then, we have to trim for free agent signings. Not to worry, we have 17-22 players that could be DFA'd, demoted or traded with the blink of an eye. Still, this is crunch time for Bloom.
