I think it worked, last year, so they rinsed and repeated. Like last year, they hoped some SP'ers would be used from the pen, but that hardly happened, at all, due to so many injuries, and then we traded Newcomb, who went o to be a very good pen guy- not to mention the Priester deal. 2025 RP innings buy pitchers who were viewed as mostly starters: 19 Newcomb 11 Criswell 8 Dobbins 6 Tolle 5 Bello 4 Fitts 3 Harrison, May 2 Buehler

Yes, and even if we were 5-6 GB the last playoff slot with 9 teams ahead of us, it's way too early to panic.
  3. moonslav59
No chance, because Brez would refuse to give up Tolle and or Early plus more.
  4. moonslav59
It is possible many teams want(ed) Duran, but Brez valued him more highly and could not agree on any returns offered.

From soxprospects,com... Player of the Day: The long-awaited professional debut of Brandon Neely went as well as could have hoped, with the 22-year-old former Florida Gator went two hitless innings, striking out five. Neely dropped into the third round after an uneven Junior campaign in which he posted a 5.13 ERA but struck out 108 batters in 79 innings in a swingman role. He was unable to debut last season because of elbow soreness that he was able to rehab rather than get surgery. He is currently ranked 49th in the system.

Well said. The one thing I wonder about is that with the Suarez signing, I wonder, if we could have traded Fitts, Clarke, Galle plus some guys from the Oviedo and Durbin trade and gotten a better infielder.

Sox are in a 3 way tie for the second worst record in the AL, but two team we are tied with or ahead of are also "contenders" for a playoff slot: 4-8 BOS, DET (and CWS) 4-9 SEA We are 1.5 GM the 6th best team in the AL. 2 GB from BAL and MIN slotted 4th and 5th.
  8. moonslav59
I would have demanded King, Sousa or Janek, but not one for one. Would you have given Rafaela one for one?
  9. moonslav59
Yup, and he seems like a better choice than Buehler was, last year. Same cost, except for the players traded away for Gray.
  10. moonslav59
    The Sox have 5 batters doing okay or better and 8 not doing so well: (some really small sample sizes here) 1.128 Wong (13 PA) 1.110 Abreu (49) .875 Masa (24) .859 Willson (53) .790 Rafaela (34) _______________ .656 Roman (52) .598 Mayer (33) _______________ .550 Duran (39) .508 Monasterio (13) .490 Narvaez (28) .391 Story (55 leads team) .391 Durbin .258 IKF (12) _______________ Team splits: .657 v R and .697 v L .642 Away and .692 Home .640 RISP and .644 Men on Base .601 Late & Close and .567 High Leverage .546 1st slot .414 2nd slot .834 3rd .583 4th 1.121 5th .323 6th .739 7th .710 8th .783 9th Our 7-8-9 battera are doing better than our 1-2-4-6 batters.
  11. moonslav59
And Gray is 7th in fWAR over the same time, but of course his age raises many concerns about going forward.
  12. moonslav59
I don't disagree. I wanted Breggie back, and I think he did more to help other players on the 2025 team than he was even given credit for, and he was given a lot of credit. I still think a 30 year old Suarez is less of a risk than a 32 year old Bregman, who has been on a 3-4 year steady decline on offense, except for half of 2025.
  13. moonslav59
A thread is not good enough, I guess.

I'm not sure how many of Slaten's injuries have been major, but when all is said and done, if he's out significant time every year, like he has been, it hurts the team. I get that. He missed about 8 weeks in 2024 and came back with a decent ending, but not as good as pre-injury. 2.44 FIP pre/ 3.17 post He missed about half of 2025. (3.18 pre/ 4.49 post) All together, he's missed about half the time. That sucks.
  15. moonslav59
Even if Duran is better than Paredes, which only time will tell, we'd be better with Paredes, since Duran, Rafaela or Masa are on the bench because of the OF/DH logjam, anyway.
  16. moonslav59
Paredes has a club option for 2027. It becomes mutual, if he finishes in top 10 MVP voting.

MLBTR reports on an ex-Sox player... The Pirates sent utility infielder Enmanuel Valdez outright to Triple-A Indianapolis, per the MLB.com transaction log. He evidently cleared waivers after being designated for assignment when the Bucs called up Konnor Griffin last week. Also reported... Red Sox manager Alex Cora informed reporters today that right-hander Johan Oviedo has been diagnosed with a flexor strain. He has avoided surgery but will be shut down from throwing for six weeks. Chris Cotillo of MassLive was among those to relay the details of the situation.
  18. moonslav59
He has looked terrible in a very SSS, but yes. He is more questionable now, than he was before the season began. Some of us looked at his record over the last 2-3 years and had high expectations. I have concerns about every player, even Crochet & Anthony, and those concerns can rise or fall slightly based on recent performance and production- or lack of it. Lately, you have been Mr. Short Sample Size, so I find your point a bit puzzling.
  19. moonslav59
I find that very hard to believe. Maybe not a guy Brez wanted, but I'm sure some decent and better infielders were there for Duran- straight up. On sports talk shows here in HOU, Duran for Paredes was talked about a lot, and the bottom line was that the Sox wanted more than just Paredes and HOU said no. HOU's first choice was Abreu. There was also some talk of Duran and Bello for Paredes and several other players/prospects, but they could not agree on who the others were.
  20. moonslav59
Yet, when we suggested trading Sale, this same thing was supposed to be overlooked. It is very concerning that he has now missed time in all 3 seasons with the Sox. I'm not sure about his minor league injury history, but I do know he was a starter until 2021-2022.
  21. moonslav59
That's true for just about every FA pitcher. To me, the contract number and years seemed about what should have been expected. It was obviously a fall-back from Breggie, but I think the Breggie contract was more "suspect" than Suarez's.
  22. moonslav59
Word down here in HOU was that HOU wanted Abreu, but they'd take Duran for Paredes. The sticking point was that Brez wanted more than just Duran. (I suggested one or two from King, Sousa and Janek.)
  23. moonslav59
    No and Yes.
  24. moonslav59
They are not the same, but patience may be needed for Slaten, too.
  25. moonslav59
Agreed. I was on a rant about how our second tier FA signings, like Story & Yoshida have been big letdowns. It's been over 8 years since we've struck gold on a major FA signing. Suarez should not be added to the list, despite two bad starts.
