  1. What do you think of Merloni's point about the Sox loving high swing and miss rates in the K zone by Ryan and Cease?
  2. Exactly. Mayer will end up facing a few LHPs as they come in relief, and if he shows he can hit them, we can always have Romy start platooning with Masa at DH or whoever we have at 1B (assuming he's a LHB.)
  3. I think Abreu's platoon time may be coming to an end, despite having RHBs Garcia and Campbell banging on the OF door. BTW, Duran was pretty much a platoon player in 2022: 48 GS vs RHPs (89% of starts) 6 GS vs LHPs (The team faced RHPs 78% of the time.) Duran hit .721 vs RHPs, that year and hasn't come close since, but Cora keeps him in the line-up as much as possible. His speed on the bases is likely the reason. His defense has not been bad, and was actually a plus for a year or two. Duran has a .645 OPS since 2023 and .634 since 2024 (declining trend.) Abreu is at .604 since '24, but was 76 points higher in 2025 (.676 to .600.) I cant see us stunting the development of Campbell and Garcia by having them as strict platoons on the ML club- one for Duran and one for Abreu. I doubt we use even one to do it. I will not be surprised if both Duran and Abreu play FT in 2025. If it was up to me, I'd play the GG OF'er FT over Duran.
  4. Gotta think there is a health issue.
  5. Agreed. I'm pretty sure he gets more than that as a FA, unless he has a serious medical issue.
  6. Agreed. I still have great hopes for Campbell and Garcia, but one will likely be part of any trade for a solid #2 SP'er. We'll probably have to give Early up, too and maybe Arias. Maybe Campbell, Clarke, Arias & Sandlin. Only two need 40 man roster status.
  7. Agreed, but if they do go large and long on a pitcher, it might be Cease. He fit's their profile with the high swing and miss rate in the K zone. He will turn 30, soon, so he's not well into his 30's. His "off year" might shorten the L & L a bit. I think we trade for Ryan and hand the 3-4-5 slots to Sandoval, Bello & the kids. We will and should spend the money on big bats.
  8. Casas has to recover from a serious injury. Masa has very little power and is aging. I'd be happy with Alonso at 1B, Suarez at 3B, Mayer/Romy at 2B and Masa/Ref at DH.
  9. I've always though North Carolina would be the spot for a MLB team. They must have a thousand minor league teams, but they lack one major metro area and trying to find a more central location to draw from many smaller cities might draw nobody. Indianapolis, Buffalo, San Antonio & Vancouver might be long shots, too.
  10. I have mentioned this as a possibility, because we need hitting. It seems counterintuitive to trade Duran or Abreu, when they are out 2nd and 3rd best hopes on O, next year, after Anthony. I love Rafaela's D and think he'll be okay enough on O to be a solid plus, but he does have trade value, too. He's locked up long term, too. Anthony or Garcia can play CF (please no Duran!) LF: Duran, Campbell CF: Anthony, Garcia RF: Abreu, Garcia I'm not sure what we get for Rafaela. We may need to add Campbell or Garcia, then pay to bring Ref back, but keeping Duran & Abreu makes a lot of sense. (And i'm this site's leader in suggested Duran trade scenarios.)
  11. Yes, and Narvaez slumped, too.
  12. In years past, I'd be asking for something like this. I agree it would be better to count Bello as the #4 and let the mass of kids and Sandoval fight for the 5 slot, but we will likely not spend as much as any of us wish we would, this winter and we need a couple bats, with at least one being a big one. I think we'll ride the rotation depth and hop we find two good ones, while Bello slots #3, and we get one solid SP by trade or free agency. I'm betting on Joe Ryan or Cease- not both. If we could afford to get Ryan, Cease as well as moderately paid Suarez and Hoskins, I'd be in.
  13. The 2025 60 Day IL expires 5 days after the WS. The Astros just DFA's 5 guys to make room. The Sox have 8 players on the 60, but have 7 slots open due to FAs and were at 39, anyway. Free Agents: Bregman, Giolito, Refsnyder, Matz, Wilson, Hendriks, D May. 60 Day IL Players Houck (will likely go on the 60 right after the start of '26) Mayer Dobbins Sandoval Crawford Winckowski Casas Guerrero Grissom (may be let go)
  14. On the Merloni interview I saw, he mentioned how much the Sox loved the high swing and miss rates on balls in the K zone and that was why they wanted Ryan, but he also mentioned Cease fits that profile, too. Maybe Cease not King? One site has Cease getting $25M x 5 at age 29. That seems doable if someone twists JH's arm.
  15. No. If Story had opted out, the Sox could have negated the opt out by giving him the 2028 option. The Sox owe him $25M in '25 and '26, and that's it. (His tax hit is $23.33M)
  16. Shocking news! Certainly deserved it's own thread!
  17. Bleacher Reports projects... 350/10 Tucker 220/10 Murakami 210/7 Alonso 180/7 Bichette 175/5 Bregman 160/6 R Suarez 140/5 Bellinger 135/5 F Valdez 125/5 Cease 120/4 Schwarber _________________ 95/5 Naylor, 90/5 M King, 88/5 E Diaz, 72/4 Grisham, 50/2 Woodruff E Suarez & J Polanco not even mentioned
  18. Hoskins mutual option decline: he's a FA.
  19. Both are far down on my wish list, but I tried to find two FAs better than masa and not terribly expensive. Last 3 years: .867 Ozuna (.756 in '25 and turns 35 real soon.) .866 Schwarber .827 Alonso .809 Naylor (.803 Casas) .796 Bregman .788 O'Hearn .780 B Lowe .778 Bichette .775 Suarez .774 O'Neill (.762 Masa) .754 Moncada .732 Hoskins ISO 3. Schwarber .280 11. Alonso .252 19. Ozuna .235 35. Suarez .223 38. B Lowe .221 (49. Casas .211)
  20. It looks like we can spend near $45M and not go over the tax line. It will be year 2, but going up to line 2 would not be a severe penalty, but let's assume $45M. We could offer Schwarber one more year than everyone else, in the form of an option with a decent buyout, and that would lower the AAV. Differed money could, too. Let's say his AAV is $30M. We might get Suarez, Polanco or M kelly for $15M AAV (maybe needing to get creative with their deals, too.) 3B Suarez & Schwarber DH would be a huge boost to the offense. It would mean an in house solution at 1B (Romy/Duran? Romy/Masas or trade for one.) and 2B (Mayer/Romy)
  21. I'm not sure why, but we seem to do way better with comp picks than actual draft picks, often higher picks, even! 2005: Ellsbury & Lowrie for OCab- the gift that keeps giving 2005: Buchholz for Pedro- who decline shortly afterwards (We lost our own top picks in 2005.) 2006: Daniel Bard for Damon and was selected after Jason Place 2010: Workman for Jason Bay- 3 worse players taken before him. 2011: Barnes (VMart) was the first Sox pick but JBJ (Beltre) was taken after Swihart & Owens 2012: Brian Johnson (Papelbon) was better than Marrero taken before. 2014: Kopech (the Ellsbury regifting) was taken after Chavis. 2022: Anthony (ERod) was taken after Romero and C Coffey 2023: Campbell (Bogey) was taken after Teel, Zanetello & A Anderson 2025: Godbout (Pivetta) TBD (Witherspoon & Phillips taken B4)
  22. I thought it was $8M bonus not 8.4. So he gets $7.7 +$100K buy out + maybe $75K, which could mean $7.85M (or $7.8M)
