    So far, yes, and since Romy can play 2B and 3B, it's a perfect fit. Masa is not a clear platoon guy. If Casas plays, he's not either, so that links Romy to Mayer. Ref could be brought back to platoon for Duran or Abreu, but we have Campbell & Garcia to do that. The problem there would be stunting their growth just to get them to start 30-35% of all games. I'm fine with giving a slot to Mayer-Romy (2B or 3B,) but we have to go bold at the other 2 open infield slots. I know you like Breggie-Hoskins, and that's okay to me, but it looks like status quo, once you figure in injury projections and possible downticks from some vets. If we could somehow dump about 1/3 of Masa's contract and add a better DH (one with more power) I'd be okay with your infield choices. Of course, I'd like Schwarber, but realistically, maybe it could be O'Hearn or Ozuna.

    He has 2 arb years after 2026. There is no urgency for any team to extend him. He showed some decline in offense, defense and baserunning (SBs) in 2026. While he just turned 29, he will be 31 during his last controlled season.

    Kinda the point I was getting at. It was an $8M option with $100K buyout and then a possible arb, if no deal was reached. I thought $8M was fair to the team and close for the player.

    I do think that lowers his cost, but he's a better batter than Alonso and a way better one than Bregman and Bo. It's his age that will limit the years and amount by maybe as much as the position. Even the Story deal, the longest FA contract signed since Price had an opt out, and Price was traded well before his last contract year. Maybe JH is poised to do one large and long, and the fact that Schwarber might get or take a 4 year deal could be the deciding factor in who JH splurges on (if any.) I seriously doubt we go L & L on 2 guys. Maybe two 3 or 4 year deals could occur, and those guys will be older, like Suarez, M Kelly and or Polanco.

    The way Romy hit RHPs, last year, he might be the choice at 2B, if we don't upgrade. He could also platoon with Mayer at 2B or at 1B with ____ or at DH with Masa, but I doubt we want to platoon Mayer. (Maybe Masa, too.) I'm not trying to be a downer, here. I have some high hopes on some improvements from younger players and projected higher PAs from many, but I just don't feel comfortable hoping on improvements and better health as the plan.

    Yes, I mentioned this in a recent post. 1B was .690. DH without Devers was___? We have enormous potential to improve at an of those slots, while also trying to keep 3B from becoming like one of those slots. 3B? Mayer hit .674. (Romy FT or platoon w Mayer) DH? Masas under .690. 2B? Mayer at .674 or DHam .590/Campbell .664/Sogard .661 (Romy FT or platoon with Mayer?) 1B: Lowe at .790 but he likely is not back and the rest were pathetic, except for Romy. I'm willing to let Mayer and Romy platoon at 2B or 3B, if we fill 2 other infield slots in a major way. I'm not sure Bregman & Hoskins is "major" enough for me, but even that might be asking too much from JH & Co. If we upgraded DH with someone like Schwarber or Alonso, then I'd be fine with going lighter at 1B and 2B/3B.

    Park factors help with runs, but we did finish top 10 on the road in runs. I thought you valued wRC+ very highly. When I use OPS, you often throw wRC+ at me. We had the 3rd best OPS+ in the division. The A's had a better OPS+ than us.

    Oh, I'm totally behind adding a major bat to the infield. In fact, I've been begging for two- both being better hitters than Bo. Alonso & Suarez Alonso & Polanco Suarez & Polanco (and maybe Hoskins, too.) Even if we got Schwarber, I'd still want a couple infielders, but we'd likely have to settle on Suarez or Planco, at best (not 2) or Torres, Rengifo, Willi Castro or sign a guy like Merrill Kelly and then trade for K Marte. I'm not arguing Bichette is too expensive. I'm arguing for better offense value and spending more.

    Okay 11th is not top 10, just as tied for 11th is the common expression when also tied for 12th. I thought you did not trust Mayer. Besides: Sox 2B OPS .670. Mayer's .674. YES! IMPROVE THE ODDS! Yes, on making the playoffs. Yes on advancing in the playoffs. Yes on odds to win the WS. Staying complacent rarely pays off. Status quo is a bad plan. Praying for good health should not be the main hope going into a season.

    Agreed, but then again, I had hoped Bogey would moveto 2B or 3B, when we signed Story. I hoped Devers moved to 1B several years ago. Now, I hope the move Story to 2B, and even think 3B would be better than SS.

    I don't see Bichette as a plus on D, so it's not a multi level plus. Sure, getting BO production at 2B vs what we've gotten over the years would be a big boost, but now that Devers is gone, what are we looking at for projected OPS at 1B and DH? Our 1B position hit .690. Masa was under .690. There is great room for upgrades there, too. Your point is well taken. Fixing 2B is harder to do than fixing DH and 1B, long term.

    I've said over and over, I doubt we sign Alonso or Schwarber. I'll even add Bichette to the list. What I'm saying is we should. If they don't want to go "long" then sign Suarez, Hoskins, Merrill Kelly, Matz and trade for Ryan. None of them should be "large AND long." (Maybe sub Polanco for Suarez.)

    Indeed, but wouldn't you feel better if we had a better roster on paper, so if we have injuries- maybe about the same as 2025, we'd be better positioned to improve? The one thing this team had, last year was decent depth. It was not that great at 1B, 3B and 2B, but the OF 4 amigos) , Catcher (Narvaez), rotation and pen depth made a big difference over the season. (Getting Lowe helped, too.) We need more high quality players without compromising the depth and balance, too much. If you look at our 9 batting slots, we might have been the most balanced line-up in MLB. When you look at what we got from our rotation depth, one could argue we don't make the playoffs without Dobbins and Early. Our pen depth did what was needed. We keep lamenting the loss of Betts, Bogey, Devers and even JD, but we've only added one star on offense, and he just opted out.

    Let's assume Anthony replaces Devers, in kind, despite less power. We still will likely lose Lowe (.790) and Ref (.828), which is about a half season of PAs (330ish.) So, now we need 630 PAs from Anthony to equal and 330 more from Hoskins for that and then to probably do way better than Casas and others who played some 1B. Who adds O value in 2026? Mayer, Campbell, Garcia? Also, "top 10" is debatable. T12th in wRC+ They did place 9th or 10th in other categories like OPS, away OPS & wRC+. I guess 10th best is good enough for some. Don't we have to get better to improve our odds? Hoskins should help, but we will be counting on better health and upticks from the vets & kids to have a chance to improve. I really see no reason to expect better from Story, Duran, Abreu, Narvaez, Rafaela, Romy & Bregman, assuming he returns. Anthony playing more should help. Mayer, Campbell & garcia might give us a boost- maybe even a jolt, but who is counting on that?

    I do think all those team might want Casas, but none would give up good talent to get him. Maybe an DSL/FCL promising prospect.

    If we go large and long, it should be for Alonso or Schwarber not Bo. I'd rather go shorter on Suarez and Hoskins or Polanco & Hoskins than long on Bo.

    Well, if Casas, Breggie, Abreu and Anthony were healthy in 2025, they'd have been good, too. Why do we keep praying on excellent health, instead of trying to significantly improve the team from year to year? Even really good teams often look to improve. The idea should be to move towards great. We lost Devers. We gained half an Anthony. Maybe Hoskins keeps us at middle tier on O.

    Post AUG 15th, they were 19th in wRC+ and 15th in OPS. Tied for 16th in wOBA 19th in runs scored

    Top half-middle third is meh. Losing Devers (.905) Ref (.828) and Lowe (.790) could be made up for by more PAs from Anthony, Mayer and Abreu (+Yoshida/Casas/Romy/Campbell-Garcia) but that is not even close to a likely equalizer. IMO, just bringing back Bregman and signing Hoskins/Naylor/O'Hearn or Josh Bell, as I've seen suggested often is falling way short.
