  1. We all had high hopes for Verdugo after hitting .817 with LAD in 2019 and .844 in 2020. He was at .899 on May 5th, and it was a close call on grouping him with the Devers, Bogey & JD group of with the second tier. He's still at a respectable .785 and has had some big hits along the way. Speaking of OPS...now Verdugo is between 2nd and 3rd tier... 1.005 Schwarber (95 PAs) .894 Devers .867 Bogey .865 JD .828 Renfroe .811 Kike .785 Verdugo .777 Arroyo (175) .762 Dalbec .756 Plawecki (148) .656 Vazquez .578 Duran (112)
  2. Agreed, and the SEA-BOS series could turn the season, even without a sweep. either way. The funny thing is, the Ms have a big net run disparity between scoring and allowing runs, yet they look closest.
  3. Exactly. I'm not for handing him away. I guess, if Schwarber proves he can play 1B, we could trade Dalbec and keep Verdugo.
  4. If Dalbec hits well, Verdugo is too good to ride the bench. He's worth more to another team as a starter than to us as a 4th OF'er. I got that reasoning from you.
  5. If we keep Schwarber and JD, trading Verdugo makes sense. LF Schwarber CF Kike RF Renfroe The only viable option might be to do a 3-way platoon (Verdugo-Dalbec at the plate and Schwarber playing 1B or LF depending on who sits.) v RHP 1B Schwarber LF Verdugo CF Kike RF renfroe v LHP 1B Dalbec LF Schwarber CF Kike RF Renfroe
  6. Okay, then even the O's and Seattle records, and you're barely 3-4 games better off.
  7. The 2018 team was not a great defensive team, but they had a few positions where they were plus or even plus, plus. There's a difference between average or even a little below average and what we are seeing, now. This is unchartered territory, to me. It's been horrific. It's gut-twisting, horrible defense.
  8. I gotta say this, because it lines up with what I've been saying about all of the Cora bashing over lose-lose choices. Yesterday, Cora used our best pitchers and all 11 runs scored on them. NOT Davis & Gonsalves. Is Cora a genius for bringing them in and keeping us in the game? Why aren't people bashing him for bringing in Richards (1 run), Taylor (1 run), Ottavino (1 run) and Whitlock (3 runs) after Sale's start (5 runs)? Here's a game we lost while Cora did everything he could to win it and used all our best guys, many who now can't be used, tonight. Can we cut the guy some slack? Yes, he makes mistakes, and the team seams to be lacking focus due to several obvious reasons that transcend baseball, but even when he seems to do everything everyone wants him to do, we still find a way to lose.
  9. I don't disagree, but our defense sucks way worse than I've ever seen any team play in my lifetime. It's not even close. It doesn't take the pitching or hitting off the hook, but the D has lost plenty of games we could/should have won. Yes, we have over performed our expectations, but that is no sniveling excuse for the D to play like this. (See how I twisted that 180?)
  10. COVID Update Taylor returned Kike & Santana today Shouldn't Arroyo be back around now? What's Bogey's date?
  11. Motter did get 2 hits, but apparently that did not outweigh his defense. I guess it's easier for us to let stud offensive players off the hook on D, than guys like Motter.
  12. Then, it's a problem for most team, even the winningest ones. We are 12th in SP'er IP. Granted, we've played more games than many teams, but we're still in the middle. 768 OAK 758 HOU 749 CIN 737 CWS 730 MIL 727 COL 721 LAD 720 SFG 716 ATL 714 PHI 712 NYY 710 BOS 700 SEA 698 TOR MLB Avg IP/GS: 5.1 BOS: 5.1 5.8 Eovaldi 5.2 Pivetta 5.1 ERod 5.0 Richards & Sale 4.6 Houck 4.5 Perez
  13. Expecting a guy who walks 7 every 9 innings to be a big help is dreaming.
  14. It wasn't just the 2 missed catches; it's what happened after them that contributed to extra runs. As for Sale, while it was true he did not have his best stuff, and hits are hits. All pitchers face cheezy hits, at times, but yesterday was whacked out. Here is a look at each hit Sale allowed: 1st (one run allowed) 3B to deep CF 1B ground ball up the middle 1B dribbler down 3B line 1B dribbler down 3B line 2nd (no runs) no hits 3rd (no runs) 1B line drive to LF BB 4th (4 runs score- I hesitate to say allowed) 2 outs, then... 1B dribbler down 3B line 1B line drive RF 1B line drive RF RE (third out!) Deep Fly ball to CF/RF for 4 runs! 1B infield hit to 3B 1B dribbler Infield hit to 3B Sale removed. Yes: 10 hits but at least 6 were weak and 1 deep one might have been caught. Yes: 5 runs allowed, but only 1 was earned and hardly that. Sale should not be taken off the hook, but anyone who watched all those 10 hits knows the truth.
  15. A lot to cover here. First of all, did you see some of those "hits" off Sale. I wouldn't say he was lit up. Second, this isn't about "suddenly needing defense," this is about losing game after game because of our crappy defense. No, you don't need great D to win WS, but all of our winning seasons had better D than this, some much better. You can have the greatest pitchers in the world, but asking them to get 4, 5 or 6 outs in an inning, several times a game is not going to work out well. Do you really think the 2018 team defense was anywhere near as bad as these guys have been, especially the last 2-3 weeks? (Hint: it's not close.) Newsflash, we'd lead the league ins coring, right now, if we played against defenses like ours. I have never said Defense is the most important aspect of baseball. You know we both agree it's pitching, but how you improve a team usually involves upgrading your weakest areas, and to me, our weakest is defense and the pen. Our defense is helping our pen and starters look worse than they really are, but I'm not taking the pitchers off the hook by saying that.
  16. Rays fans can probably find a team with NY killing them and TBR struggling against. The O's disparity is wild, though.
  17. Good summary, Nick. Yes, the Rays are clearly the best, and facing them after a WC win, assuming that happens, will be a very tough match-up. We can't worry about them. Maybe some of the "luck" they seem to be having will run out at just the right time. We need to get healthy and stat playing like major leaguers. Despite all the bumbling and stumbling, we still almost pull out many of the games we are losing. While that seems very frustrating, I think it is also a sign, that when we are fully healthy, we can do enough to start winning these close ones, again.
  18. From soxprospects.com... Of the five players received in the Andrew Benintendi trade, Luis De La Rosa has received perhaps the least attention, but it might be time to start giving the guy some attention. For the month of August, he had a 1.29 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over 14 innings. He also had 12 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .149 OBA. The 19-year-old righty's arsenal includes four pitches (fastball, curveball, changeup, slider). He's shown good control and a strong feel for his secondary pitches, although he could stand to add some velocity to his fastball which currently tops out in the low 90s.
  19. 3 swinging bunts off Sale than the catastrophe in CF. That was just the start of the floodgates opening up. I'm not sure I have ever seen a game like that.
  20. With pitchers, you're only as good as your last game, it seems.
  21. ...and week and month and much of the season.
  22. There were too many mistakes to list. Many not even called errors. It was just plain sick!
  23. The Iggy today is not the Iggy we remember, but your point is spot on. It basically comes down to this: if one SS makes 50-80 more plays a season on the same amount and difficulty of plays than another one, but makes 15-20 more errors, he's still way better than the other guys. (And, yes, some SSs do make 50-80 more plays than others over a season.)
  24. It was much worse than just the 4 errors, and I keep harping on the same point. The plays that are not called errors, that are made by most or a good chunk of teams everyday, are listed as singles, doubles or triples in the scorecard. There is no way this is the worst Sox game in history, but it sure felt like it. The word "sick" does not come close to giving justice to what that game was.
