  1. I mentioned Marisnik, but do you really need me to name great defensive OF'ers that are cheap?
  2. I'm not for spending big on RP'ers. If getting JBJ lessened the cost of getting Hader, I'm certainly willing to agree. I just don't get the weird fixation on JBJ, and I was a huge JBJ fan.
  3. Show me how putting the ball in play vs striking our 8% more is such a great asset? Then, subtract the double or more GIDP's Casas hits into. Now how much does it matter? I never said putting the ball in play is equal to a K. I just said it's value is overblown, and why not prove me wrong? Where's the data? BTW, saying Dalbec K's 4 times can be viewed as obstinate.
  4. I am not disputing 2021's numbers. He is in decline, and this was a blip. Why is JBJ a better choice than dozens of other great defenders?
  5. Again, why is September a better predictor of the next 5 games than anything else? Why not pick the last 11 games out of your hats? Sox 7-4 TOR 5-6 It's all how you want to see things. Yes, we lost 4 straight, and we played like s***. That has nothing to do with today.
  6. No. I'm just pointing out that when people say we have too many weaknesses to deserve to be in the playoffs, they are implying more than the teams that do deserve it. I know we have a ton of weaknesses, but we still deserve a shot at making the playoffs, because other teams do, too. This whole "right now" rant annoys me. It means nothing, tonight or tomorrow. teams have turned on a dime dozens of times, all year, but suddenly that all must change, now, because the Yanks look great now, and we don't. Look, you might be right. The Yanks might win 4 of the next 5 and we continue playing poorly, but what about the way this season has gone makes you think what you did yesterday matters today and tomorrow. It has been the exemplar for refuting the "recency effect."
  7. About as many as Casas's pop outs and groundout advance a runner and he scores. Close anyway. Plus, it's not like Casas never K's. We are talking about the difference in Ks and GIDP vs balls put in play that advance a runner AND leads to an extra run. Pretty obscure, I think. maybe it's a 33% K rate by Dalbec to 25% by Casas. That's 8 more Ks every 100 PAs. Bobby Dee might hit into 1 less DP every 100 PAs. How many balls in play make up that difference? If they do, it's not by much.
  8. True, and I was almost hands-down JBJ's biggest fans when he was here, but defensive OF'er are a dime a dozen, and some hit better than he does.
  9. The continued love for aging ex Sox players is a disease. Get over JBJ. I'd rather have Marisnik at $1.5M, for God's sake.
  10. Going by one season's numbers goes against everything fangraphs says about UZR/150, especially with OF'ers, who get so few chances. JBJ only had 96 innings in RF, this year and will be a year older, next season and still under contract with the Brewers at a hefty price. He showed serious decline from 2018-2020. I would not put too much stock into one season's numbers.
  11. He signed a 2 year deal.
  12. Indeed, and it's not just us. Can people take a look at the Jays and tell me they are doing better?
  13. I never said we have just 4 problems. I said we can see a massive improvement with 4 very solid acquisitions- none of which can fail. Our defense will still suck, if we get 3 pitchers and a solid infielder and maybe swap out Schwarber for JD, somehow. Replace & save money with Vaz and Plawecki going elsewhere. We'll still be on pins and needles with Dalbec's slumps, Arroyo's health, Vaz's game-calling and much more, but in my opinion, this is a lock playoff team, next year and probably a top 3-4 contender: Scherzer Sale Eovaldi Greinke Pivetta Seabold Houck Whitlock Barnes Ottavino Taylor DHern Sawamura Brasier/Valdez/Austin/Bazardo/Feltman 1. Kike CF 2. Verdugo/Renfroe LF/RF 3. Devers 3B 4. Bogey SS 5. Schwarber DH 6. Dalbec 1B 7. Renfroe/Verdugo RF/LF 8. Arroyo/Iggy 2B 8. Pina/Wong-RHern This is pie-in-the sky, but maybe we can come close to this, and yes, 4 players can make a huge difference. After 2022, we work on the D and see Casas and maybe others helping out.
  14. Of course. I agree. We seemed to be all swinging for more solo HRs. I'm just not equating that with "no fight." Call it stupidity, okay.
  15. In one game elimination games, anything goes.
  16. I would bet Casas ends up with a significantly better OBP than Dalbec, but I just wanted to point out the risk of counting on it. K's don't bother me, if the player produces. The whole "productive outs" thing is overblown and rare, especially if more Ks reduce GIDPs.
  17. JBJ's defense has slipped. There are tons of better and cheaper options for an all glove- no hit OF'er. I do think a Verdugo-Renfroe platoon in LF would help, assuming we get a RF'er who can defend, but how do we do that without taking away resources from upgrading the staff?
  18. Not by much, anyway, if at all, but no other position has an easy defensive upgrade without seriously affecting the offense of psyche of a player (like moving Bogey to 3B or 2B). As much as I hate to say it, maybe the defense needs to be upgrade after 2022, unless Bloom gets very bold, this winter.
  19. We have an offense that puts 8 batters with a .780+ OPS in the line-up everyday. There is no reason we can't score, except that we seem to be slumping. Time for the bats to wake up and take the pressure off our staff.
  20. Of all the teams remaining, the Yanks and us are the only two that can say: "win out and we're in."
  21. I can't agree with any of this. We can win any one game at any given time- just as easy as we can lose one. I didn't see and loss of "fight." We hit the ball hard for lots of outs, and they got some gifts from our D and hitting the ball to the right places.
  22. I just don't think we can spend much on offense. If we don't pay Vaz $7M and trade JD paying $4M of his deal, we could sign Schwarber for $15M and be pretty close to even, but without a catcher. Replacing JD with Schwarber does nothing for our D, but getting a great defensive catcher can be a nice start.
  23. Renfroe's .320 OBP is not all that bad, but yes, someone .350+ would be nice, even if we lose 10-15 HRs.
