    I'd rather have the $1 WAR player for 4 years plus $15-20M to spend on other players, depending on what the player costs we get for Bogey. It's not "lateral", when you figure in the budget. Also, even if you don't count the money, I'll take 1 WAR player x 4 years over a sandwich pick.

    In theory, yes, but we got 5 years of Verdugo for 1 year of Betts- not to mention Wong, Downs and a ton of salary space (Betts for 1 year and half of Price for 3 years). The part about trading Bogey is the same but to a lesser degree. If we don't extend him at $28M x 7, assuming he takes that, we will, in theory, have that money to spend on other players PLUS that 1 WAR player for 4 years.

    There might be other teams willing to trade for Bogey and his one year deal- perhaps in hopes of extending him. I just find it kind of strange that if Bogey is as good as many here feel he is, myself included, nobody will give up anything of value for 1 year of him as a good rate of $20M.

    Isn't the Marlins still paying part of Stanton's deal? They could throw some cash in to trade some of these guys. The point is, jacko wants to replace Hicks because of injury, but is okay keeping other injury prone players in place- it seems.

    I'm not so sure about that. $20M for 1 year is less money and less long term risk than the top FA SSs will get. Teams losing their stud SS will maybe want a replacement.

    I just threw out one example: here's another. Trade Bogey for someone like Urquidy and sign Baez to $20M x 4 or 5 yrs. That's cheaper than extending Bogey to $30M x 8.

    This year's team, no. Perez was our ace after 11 starts. Richards was our top RP'er for a couple weeks. Price would not have helped. As for "last year?" Price didn't play, Richards was not here, and Perez basically sucked.

    I saw dumping Price as a plus for us: others saw it differently. My guess is, it was pretty close to a wash, at the time of the trade.

    And, it depends on what you get for that $30M of added budget space.

    I'll take the 4 years over one of Bogey plus the budget space to keep ERod or sign Stroman or the like.

    We can probably keep ERod at the price of Bogey's extension + the cost of Urquidy. Would you trade Bogey for 4 years of Urquidy and the ability to sign and keep ERod?

    I put $25M but it is actually more at the start and less later- so maybe an avg of $25M. It's 100% of Bett's contract once Verdugo's time is up.

    Great trade for us, IMO.

    Except that the value, though less, is spread out over a longer period AND the money saved by not signing Bogey, which is not part of the trade evaluation, helps us sign other players that tips the balance. One can say we traded Betts for Verdugo and $25+M a year in spending room for many years.

    I understand the optics of losing Betts and Bogey in a 2 year period is stunningly bad to most fans. If it's about winning and only winning, we may need to consider trading Bogey. If we could not sign Betts due to some budget formula, and it was not about a single tax reset, then that formula must preclude extending Bogey, too. (IMO)

    IMO, if one of our players reaches free agency, we did not think they were worth what market value says they were worth. I don't think we ever wanted to pay Lester what he ended up getting, let alone $1 more. We were not going to pay Betts, so we traded him. Personally, because of Bogey's meh defense, I would not pay him $28M x 6 or 7 years, and he may get more than that! I don't know what Devers is worth, since he is 2 years away from free agency, but I'm more inclined to pay him the market rate than Bogey.

    Then why not trade half your team? Aren't half of them injury prone?

    I don't disagree, but some players are determined to reach free agency and max out their one big deal.

    Agreed. Make a fair offer and trade him, if he refuses it. I'm not for handing him away, but if we can get 3-4 years of a good player for 1 of Bogey, I'm thinking yes.

    So, what's the next logical step, if we aim to go towards keeping Devers (if any)? Do we just settle on a measly draft pick for Bogey? I know people here think I undervalue Bogey, but it seems some think we'll get nothing much in return for him and think the draft pick is good enough.
