600 innings is no joke, but personally, I'd prefer him in CF. Probably finding a good CF'er is easier and cheaper than a SS, but there are a lot of SS on the FA market, this year. Either way, we need a SS, 2Bman of CF'er depending on where Kike and Story play more than a closer, IMO. It's Arroyo at 2B vs Whitlock or Houck as closer, IMO. Now, if Whitlock starts and Houck is the se3t-up man, maybe Arroy is better than Schreiber as the closer. I get that.

We can shuffle players around all we want, but we need 2 key players. SS and RF, IMO. 2B and RF, if we move Story to SS. CF and RF, if we move Kike to SS or 2B w Story playing the other position. The point I'm trying to make is whether a closer is a higher need than those 2 slots and SP'ing? Where does closer fit on everyone's ranked high need areas? Mine: The vital: 1. P (I think ace) 2. SS 3. P (I prefer a solid #2 SP over closer, but it's close and depends on where we put Houck & Whitlock are placed) 4. RF The near essential 5. P 6. 1B/DH or RF/DH (if we don't get a RF'er and keep Pham and Ref or get a platoon for Ref in RF) 7. P Would be nice, but doubtful: 8. P 9. C

I get that. If you think not replacing Bogey is less important than getting a closer, I would have to disagree, but if Arroyo can stay healthy and Story can play SS, it's not a dumb idea.

I would not compare Swanson to Offerman. Swanson is almost top 10 in fWAR by everyday players at 6.2. One can argue that's a fluke as he was at 3.4. last year and barely over 2 the previous 2 seasons, including the shortened 2020 season. where his 2.2 might have projected to 5.7. Offerman was at 2.1, 1.4 and thyen 4.6 before his signing with the Sox. I'd be happy with Nimmo and Swanson, but I know many would not be. I think signing those two would allow us to spend more on pitching than going Bogey and Nimmo or Judge and Swanson/Anderson. I still think we'd need to trade for an ace, sign Swanson & Nimmo and spend the rest on pitching to come close to being a highly competitive team in 2023. That may be too much to ask.

Okay, that may be true, but what does it matter, if he doesn't? Are we going to call for a new owner as essential to our further success? (To me, that sounds absurd.)

I'm curious, looking at my list and adjusting Arroyo to 2B and Story to SS, as could happen, how would you rank our top priorities? One can just say "pitcher" rather than solid SP or RP to cover for the unknown choices on where Whitlock and Houck will be slotted. I'd think it might look like this: ( see 6 or 7 as essential, but maybe 4-5 are vital.) 1. P 2. SS/2B 3. P 4. P 5. RF (or RF/DH) 6. P 7. DH (or 1B/DH, if we get a legit RF'er) 8. Catcher 9. P or Utility 10. P

No. I listed slots that are currently open for 2023. We could keep Bogey, Wacha, Nate, JD and others, if we AND they choose to stay. (Paxton or Pham?) Yes, we may shift some people around. If we move Houck or Whitlock to SP, then the Pen needs more help. I listed Arroy at SS, so it's pretty much the same as moving Story to SS and using Arroyo at 2B. Would you prefer that over a solid closer? I'm not saying every choice is a clear cut choice against a closer. I'm just saying, when we choose to spend big anywhere, it likely means we settle for what we already have at one or more of the positions I listed. (I did not even mention catcher and 4th OF'er (assuming we add a RF'er), where many might see a bigger need than I do..

Nobody denies that fact. IMO, the problem is, if we spend on a closer, we don't spend somewhere else. What positions are weakest? Closer/solid set-up? Whitlock Houck Schreiber Barnes/Taylor SS Arroyo Downs RF Refsnyder (Dugo w Pham in LF? AT $12M???!!!???) DH Platoon: Hosmer v R & Dalbec/Pham/??? v L SP (after Pivetta & Bello) Sale ??? Paxton ??? Crawford Winckowski Mata/Walter/TWard/Seabold/Murphy/Santos Bottom of pen (after the 4-5 I mentioned above) Kelly Brasier Danish German/Bazardo/Ort/DHern or a converted SP'er like Wink/Crawford/Murphy To me, the glaring weaknesses are not the top of the pen, but that's not to say it is a strength.

No, they don't. They HAD an owner that did outspend 80-90% of the teams. From 2019 until march, 2022, the Sox spending vs lost contracts has not been like years past.

Thanks. It's an interesting list. I'd have Walter higher, and I think maybe this guy was wow'd by Bonaci's equal BBs and Ks. Murphy has really sucked for about a month.

You think JH was okay going way over v just a little over? You may be right, but I can't imagine a GM being given the okay to spend $10-15M more and saying no.

I totally agree. No more Diekmans. 2-3 Strahms at his 2022 level might be enough, but I like your guys better. We need more money for SP, SS and RF/DH.

I did not set the min PAs to 450+, so it left Trout out, and I only listed pairs on offense and pairs who are pitchers, but still, the top fWAR Angels Batting: 16. Trout 5.8 39. Ward 3.9 40. Ohtani 3.9 Pitching 6. Ohtani 5.4 27. P Sandoval 3.5 If I combined the two lists and added Ohtani's Offense + Pitching, then they'd be on my list.

If we pick up a RP'er with 5 career saves and anoint him the closer, I can just hear the rancor seeping from my monitor. Yet, Bard keeps being mentioned- like he was even an option, last winter. In reality, we need to find the next Uehara or hope Whitlock and or Houck can fill the closer or relief aces slots. I just don't see us spending big at closer- at the expense of SP'ing, SS, RF and maybe even DH and more pen depth.

The pen looked best when Houck & Whitlock were bot in the pen, and one was not piggy-backing. I'm not for standing pat, but if we only have $55-70M to spend, I'm not sure buying a $20M closer will leave enough for other high need areas- like SP, SS & RF to make having a great closer matter. For argument's sake, let's say we do this: $27M x ? Bogey $19M x ? Diaz That might leave just $10-25M to fill 2-3 SP'er slots, RF, DH and pen depth. Now, if Henry okays a major over tax budget, then the narrative changes.

It sucks that the Jays, by themselves, turned us from over .500 to under, although had we gone 10-9, we'd still be 2 under.

I get no more flummoxed by Bloom Bashers than you do over balanced, level-headed posters.

Pham's option is $6M with a $1.5 buyout, so we pay either $1.5 for him to leave or an additional $4.5M for him to play for us. He could be our 4th OF'er/Platoon DH, but if we add a RF'er, I'd prefer Refsnyder as our 5th OF'er. I don't think the 26 man roster has room for 2 back-up OF'ers slash RH'd hitting DHs. As much as it pains me to say it, Dalbec is probably a better bet as a platoon DH than either Pham or maybe Ref. I'm not all that happy with Hosmer as the LH'd DH platoon and back up 1Bman, but we may have to settle on going light at a couple positions.
