Of all the Sox free agents, Devers was "THE ONE" to bring back, especially if more than 2-3 years. He's the only one that should get better in 2023. We have a very solid line-up. Our D should be improved, despite some issues at corner OF. Our pen is vastly improved. The rotation is filled with questions and uncertainty, but we can't just focus on losing 69 starts, basically 2 FT SP'ers like Nate, Wacha and Hill, but also replacing the 34 starts from Wink, Crawford, Seabold and Davis. I'm optimistic that the increase from 20 GS'd to maybe 60 from Bello + Whitlock can be a big help in replacing about 40 of those 69 GS'd. Kluber can fill in the rest and help upgrade over those 34 starts by sketchy depth. We also have Mata and Walter to add to the mix. Counting on more than 2 GS from Sale + Paxton might be the biggest area of concern, but we almost replaced all the missing GS'd before we even reach these two + Mata/Walter/Murphy and the returning Wink/Craw/Seab. I'm not all that optimistic about the rotation, but there is some reason to think it might not be as bad as many seem to think it will/should be.

Anyone with any sense should not be mad, but we have seen the narrative building and building, then poof: the house of cards comes tumbling down. What comes next, here? I'm just curious about what new forms await us. We know it's coming. The momentum was too strong to be halted, this quickly. What sort of mental gymnastics await us. Has JH's "time still come?" Will he "sell the team?" Who "misread the room," this time? It just seemed, to me, like so many had already convinced themselves of the pending doom and gloom, and we know so many can never even hint that they might have had a wrong impression at any point in time, that I'm awaiting the goal post-moving, back-peddling and inventive distractions to come. There seems to be an aversion to optimism at all costs. Who knows, maybe we will suck, this year, and the last laughers will raise their glasses to celebrate the gloom they predicted.

Trade Dugo, Duran, Dalbec, Arroyo & Murphy for AGarcia, Luzardo, Wendle & Rojas and call it a winter.

If Yoshida can replace Bogaerts’ bat, this team could actually be better than last year’s… And, IMO, Turner should outhit the 2022 JD. Casas should easily out hit and defend our 1Bmen of 2022. A healthy Kike and Story can gives a boost on O & D. The pen is way better, even without Whitlock. It will likely come down to the rotation and Yoshida.

How about the first Q? I went into this winter wondering, if we could extend Bogey or Devers, and I wished it was Devers: check. I hoped we could replace Bogey's bat, elsewhere: check. I hoped we'd add defense at SS as a bridge to mayer: unchecked. I hoped we'd fix the pen and add a solid #2 SP'er. Half-checked.

No, they should have locked him up, when his stock was high. So, we lock up Casas at 8M x 10 and Bello at $9M x 10, and we squeak under the tax line in 2023, and even the Bloom bashers would have to say something good about him for 3 minutes.

2 questions: How many, here, thought we even had a 50% chance at extending Devers? How many now view this winter's moves as a success, overall?

The same for 2023, yes, but this is huge. No opt outs. No no-trade clause. The monkey is off our backs. Big sigh of relief, and not just for fans. We still have about $17M under the tax line, so maybe the 2023 roster is not quite set. I still think w etrade for Rojas or Mateo and shouldn't have to much up for either. I'd like to see us have a better defensive RF'er, but I'm okay with L- Dugo and R- Ref. I think Yoshida & Turner can make up for the loss of offense from Bogey & JD, and in terms of RBI production, maybe a lot more. The pen is better. The rotation is the big question.

There is one report the deal is $331/10 and not $332M/11.

I doubt JH would ever have signed both Devers & Bogey, so IMO, we should be happy we signed the right one.

Since the Devers extension kicks in, next year, we might be at about $17M under the 2023 tax line. That could probably be just enough to add Andrus and Fulmer.

I certainly feel a lot better about this winter, now. It looks like a team-friendly deal, especially in light of the recent mega deals just signed. It's no longer a dream... DEVERS FOREVERS !!!!

I thought they might start the extension, this year, but apparently it begins in 2024. Does that mean we will spend more, this year, to get us close but not over the tax line?

He will be just 31 years old when year 6 begins, making the majority of this 11 year deal within prime. That's what makes extending Devers a better idea than 11 years for Bogey, or maybe even 6-7 years for Bogey.

My prediction on mea culpas: zero.
