    He has not been "utility." He has been the starting SS for MIA for 4 straight years and has had 500+ PAs those 4 seasons, except 2020. GS'd at SS 122 in 2019 39/60 in '20 128 in '21 136 in '22 GS'd at other positions: 1 at 1B in '19 1 at 3B in '20 Not "utility." Not part-timer.

    They might take Duran straight up- 6 years for 1. They might take Murphy and Dalbec. There were rumors they asked about Dalbec.

    I'm a huge OBP guy, but age, SLG and defense are big factors, too. BTW, Devers has had an OBP over .352 in 3 of his last 3 full seasons. His OBP since 2019 is .352. That is way better than good.

    We still need to add Turner & Kluber to the 40 man roster. Rumor is we are looking to trade rather than DFA at least 2 guys, and we seemingly look like we will be adding a middle IF'er. So, maybe at minimum, we need to clear 3 slots for Turner, Kluber and a SS (2Bman). A 2 or 3 for 1 deal would solve a lot of roster issues, but I'm not sure many teams are looking to add 2-3 players to their 40 man roster on the level of Brasier, Ort and Taylor/Seabold or even Duran. For example, I'd love to trade Brasier, Ort and Seabold for Rojas, and our roster would be a clean 40, but I seriously doubt MIA takes that. They'd probably want Duran and Seabold or someone like Murphy.

    I'd rather we trade for a 1 year bridge SS like Rojas, Mateo, A Rosario or Mondesi. I don't think we'd have to give up much, except for Rosario.

    Devers was worth every penny of this deal, on paper.

    Just this past draft, we picked Roman Anthony with the 79th pick- very similar to the comp pick we could have had with getting under the tax line, and we gave him a bonus of about $1.6M over slot. We also paid Brook Brannon about $550 overslot. We were able to do this by paying under slot bonuses to Romero ($600K) and a little more, here and there. It does affect who you draft- perhaps more than the number pick you get, at times. In 2021, we picked up two of our most promising lower round players by paying them over slot: #136 Nathan Hickey ($600K over) #316 Kavadas $125K over) In 2020: #89 Blaze Jordan ($1.1M over)

    Yes, he's going to break the pay record by a lot. I doubt I'll ever think it's a good idea to use so much of the budget for one guy on the Sox, but if JH is willing...

    Who knows? I'm just saying, if Devers gets $30M x 11, I see Soto getting $33m x 15 as being about in line with value vs pay on the open market.

    He's 2 years younger than Devers. He's better than Devers. If Devers is worth $30M x 11, Soto is worth $33M x 15, now. If he was a "homegrown" player, would the narrative be different? I'm not saying I'd pay it or want so much of the budget tied up in just 2 players, but "worth" is a hard thing to figure, these days.

    MLBTR still has this wording in their article: Devers was previously set to have a $17.5MM count towards Boston’s luxury tax but that number will now jump to $30.09MM. The specific breakdown of the Devers deal isn’t known, but the competitive balance tax is calculated based on the average annual value of the deal

    They need to wait to opening day to put Paxton on the 60-day IL (lol), but I'd go with Paxton. Technically, we have 6 starters, now: Sale Paxton Kluber Whitlock Bello Pivetta

    The soxprospects.com podcast talked about the Sox working on trading away a couple players to avoid having to DFA anyone. Brasier, Dalbec and Ort's names came up, a lot. We still need to add Kluber and Turner to the 40, and a couple 2 for 1 trades would work, nicely, if one was a SS and the other a SP or RF'er, but most teams are probably not looking to add to their 40, unless they are better players than those 3. Duran & Ort for M Rojas works for me. Dalbec and Brasier for Michael A Taylor, anyone?

    I'm all for the idea, now that we only added Kluber. I also like him as a SP'er more than Houck. I think he'll be fine. Just don't jerk him around, unless he needs his inning managed, at some point.

    Yes, we get the conundrum. I guess paid up front could mean upfront when the contract extension begins in 2024.

    The signing bonus being spread out over the contract term for tax purposes is simple. We just need to know when the extension officially begins.
