    We also traded Harrison and got rid of Criswell, who started a game last year and 18 in 2024. Also gone are Giolito, Buehler, May & Newcomb who started 58 games last year.

    The 2020 team opened the season with a rotation of Eovaldi, Perez, Weber, Springs & Hall. Our closer was Workman, who was traded at the deadline for Pivetta and promptly messed the bed. (Barnes, Brasier, Walden, Hembree, Brice & Brewer filled the rest of the pen.) OKay, ERod was out all year. Perez led the tean in IP, Ryan Weber 3rd, Phillips valdez 4th, Mazza 5th, Godley 6th, Brewer 7th, Brasier 8th, Barnes 9th, Springs 10th, Brice 11th, Osich, Kickham & Covey not far behind. We started Jose Peraza at 2B w Beni, JBJ and Verdugo as our OF. Yes, Devers, Bogey & JD were still around. Vaz had a .689 career OPS going into 2020. Chavis finished 7th in PAs, Pillar 8th despite being traded. The bench was Dalbec, Plawecki, Arauz & Lin.

    I'm as frustrated as everyone else, and I'm not telling people they cant be frustrated, but when I blame the GM for not adding someone I liked better and they are sucking, too, it kinda rings hollow.

    I don't disagree, but we went decades having great bats, but we won our first and following rings when... we added Schilling to Pedro (Lowe/Wake/Arroyo/Foulke) we added Beckett, DiceK & Papelbon to Schilling we added Lackey, Dempster & Uehara to Lester we added Sale, Price & Kimbrel (Nate mid season) to ERod & Porcello

    The pitching turnover has been astounding since Brez took over- from farm to MLB to a large uptick in focus on adding pitchers via the draft and other ways. As you pointed out, only Priester and Sale stick out as pitchers that have done well, at times they were healthy. I'm glad we focused heavily on pitching- top to bottom. Oh, and by the way, we not have Holobetz, Phillips and Ziehl via the Sale/Grissom>Ziehl and Priester deals.

    We looked fine on paper for the rotation, and maybe the idea was to have our starter depth help the pen out, but we've already had to resort to E Rivera starting a game, and a pen game seems right around the corner. I don't really blame Brez & Co for this, as they seemed to over focus on pitching rather than big bats, so I'm not going to complain there.

    True, and the pitching ha sucked, especially some that did very well last year. We still coulda used a big bat add.

    I was very high on Cespedes a couple years ago, then I soured badly, recently. He's only 20, so I should have cut him some slack. He seems to be making great strides. Let's see how he hits AA ball, once he gets promoted. With 22 year olds Castro and Bleis, I think I'm totally done with any hopes on that pair.

    Good news. I must have missed that podcast. Yes, the numbers don't always tell the whole/important story.

    Of course one big bat wasn't going to make up 8 games, but it would look like we tried harder. It's early. Normally, I'd be close to giving up, but the whole AL sucks. If we miss the WC by 2-3 games, we can revisit this.

    I'm okay with the term "jumping the gun," but can you agree that there is a reason for doing it? It might be flimsy. You might disagree, but if these guys do well, it's a good idea and has merit. We've seen what happens when we wait it out and then try to sign a guy after he becomes a star. That strategy has been a failure, too. Sure, we both agree the solution is for JH to just pay the stars, but when that ain't happening, what's a GM to do?

    And, Rafaela is one of the few Sox players where L-R splits don't really matter.

    Nobody is saying give money to every guy who rakes or pitches great in AAA. Hell, some guys get it over AA numbers. The Sox have not had many nationally & highly ranked prospects, so we are talking about a limited number of prospects. The Bello & Rafaela extensions were not mega deals and not given to national-high ranked prospects. Out of Anthony, Mayer, KC, Tolle and Early, we've signed 2, so I'm not seeing the "sign em all" philosophy on display and the need to criticize it. Of course, when KC starts out looking crappy, it looks like an awful idea. The bad month by Anthony, basically one bad month out of 3 or 4, should not be used as proof the idea has no merit or no "reason." I'm fine with disagreeing, but to say there is "no reason" is what I was questioning.

    How does this line of reasoning suggest we extend non-promising players and prospects or even mildly promising ones? Okay, maybe Bello was just mildly promising, but I'm not defending every extension- just saying there is a reason with merit. Health status is a factor, too. To suggest there is no reason to extend young and very promising players is what I am addressing. Many said the same thing we hear about Bello about Ceddanne, too. Not much talk on him, anymore.

    Agreed, but to me it's kinda hard to put much of the blame on a guy who seemingly made good moves over the winter. I also think it's disingenuous to blame a guy when he made better moves than most of us wanted made. I'm not calling you out, and I have been critical of Brez, too, after suggesting guys like ESuarez, Polanco & KMarte. So many players are under performing 2025 numbers and/or 2026 expectations. I guess the GM is supposed to foresee that and make choices based on knowing this. Yes, they hold the ultimate accountability for the team success. I think Cora was let go (first) because the underperformance is usually blamed on the manager and not the GM, firstly.

    The point being made is that many who are highly critical of Brez and his winter choices wanted guys that are not doing well or are doing worse than who he added, except Durbin & Oviedo.

    Well said, but as this pertains to having some players in leadership roles, would Bregman be telling batters something different from Fatse? Or was he just a confidence builder we never replaced?
